Aroor Karthyayani temple is situated in Aroor, within the Alappuzha district of Kerala. It is recognized as one of the 108 Durga temples in the state of Kerala.
The shrine is referred to as Ayroor within the Durgalaya Kshetra Namavali. The principal deity honored at this temple is Goddess Karthyayani, a formidable embodiment of Goddess Shakti.The darshan at the Aroor Karthyayani temple faces east. Rituals are conducted five times daily. The Upa Devatas venerated in the temple include Shiva and Ganapathi.The annual festival at the temple lasts for eight days and culminates on the day of Uthram nakshatra in the month of Meenam.
Historically, the temple was referred to as Kattil Pisharam. It is widely believed that the installation of the deity in the temple was carried out by Vilwamangalam Swamiyar. According to tradition, he witnessed the divine radiance of Goddess Karthyayani beneath a mango tree in Aroor and subsequently performed the installation at that location. Some scholars suggest that the temple was originally situated in front of the Jyothisha Kotta (fort) belonging to the Kochi kings in Edappally. The temple faced destruction during an attack by the Dutch, who reportedly cast the murti of the Goddess into a pond. The temple that was destroyed was reconstructed by Kannankulangara Kaimal.
According to legend, he wished for the Goddess to remain at the site. He requested the Goddess to wait for his return while he fetched a tender coconut. It is believed that Kaimal never came back, having taken his own life by hanging. Consequently, the Goddess is said to have made her permanent abode at that location. The arukola of Kannankulangara Kaimal is venerated beneath a Karimpana within the temple grounds, and he is commonly referred to as Arukulathammavan.
അരൂർ കാർത്യായനി ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രം
ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിൽ അരൂരിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രശസ്ത ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് അരൂർ കാർത്ത്യായനി ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രം. ആലപ്പുഴ നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 22 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം. അരൂരിന്റെ പ്രാചീനമായ പേര് അതിരൂർ (അതിർത്തിക്കടുത്തുള്ള ഗ്രാമം) എന്നാണെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. തിരുവനന്തപുരം പദ്മനാഭസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മുറജപത്തിൽ പങ്കെടുത്ത ശേഷം, ഗുരുവായൂരിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങുമ്പോൾ, അതിരൂരിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരുന്ന വില്വമംഗലത്ത് സ്വാമിയാർ ഒരു വലിയ മരത്തിന്റെ ചുവട്ടിൽ വിശ്രമിക്കുമ്പോൾ, അവിടെ ദേവിയുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം കണ്ടു. തൻറെ ജ്ഞാനത്താൽ അത് കാർത്ത്യായനി ദേവിയാണെന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ അദ്ദേഹം ദേവിക്കായി ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രം പണിതു.
ദേവിയെ ആരാധിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം കുറച്ചുകാലം അവിടെ താമസിച്ചുവെന്നും പിന്നീട് ആ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഭരണം വിവിധ നമ്പൂതിരി കുടുംബങ്ങൾക്ക് ഏൽപ്പിച്ചുവെന്നും പഴമൊഴി പറയുന്നു. കേരളത്തിലെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ പരശുരാമൻ സ്ഥാപിച്ച 108 ദേവീക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. "കാട്ടിൽ പിഷാരം" എന്ന പേരിൽ ഈ സ്ഥലം പ്രശസ്തമാണ്. കണ്ണങ്കുളങ്ങര കൈമൾ അരൂരിൽ, ഇപ്പോൾ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് കാഞ്ഞിരത്തിൽ ഇരിക്കുന്ന ദേവിയെ കാണാൻ സാധിച്ചിരുന്നു. ദേവി അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് കുടിക്കാൻ എന്തെങ്കിലും ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. ഈ ആവശ്യത്തെ ശ്രീ കാർത്ത്യായനി ദേവി തന്നെയെന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ അദ്ദേഹം, താൻ തിരിച്ചുവരും വരെ ഇവിടെ ഇരിക്കാമെന്ന് ദേവിയെക്കൊണ്ട് ഉറപ്പിച്ചശേഷം ആത്മഹത്യ ചെയ്തു.
ദേവിയുടെ സത്യം പാലിക്കാൻ ദേവി ചൈതന്യം ഇവിടെ നിലനിന്നു. ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ, ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉദ്ഭവത്തിന് പിന്നിൽ ഒരു ഐതിഹ്യം നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അറിവിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ ഇവിടെ ദേവീപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടന്നു. കൂടാതെ, കൈമളിനെ ഇന്ന് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ അറകൊല എന്ന പേരിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഗണപതി, ശിവൻ, ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണൻ, അയ്യപ്പൻ, നാഗദേവതകൾ എന്നിവയാണ് ഉപദേവതകൾ. ഈ ദേവിക്ക് ഏറ്റവും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട വഴിപാട് ഇടത്തുവലത്തു കൂട്ടുപയസവും നെയ് പായസവും ആണ്. ക്ഷേത്രഭരണം രാജഭരണകാലത്ത് മഹാരാജാവിന്റെ പ്രതിനിധികൾ നടത്തിയത്. പിന്നീട്, തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡാണ് ഭരണം ഏറ്റെടുത്തത്.
