Chammanad Bhagavathi temple is situated approximately 16 kilometers from Cherthala along the Ernakulam – Cherthala road in the Alappuzha district of Kerala.
The primary deity revered in the temple is Goddess Bhadrakali, with the murti being the Kannadi Shila Pratishta. The deity is oriented towards the east. The Upa Devatas honored in the temple include Vasoorimala and Velichappadu. An annual festival takes place during the month of Kumbham, specifically on the night of Pooram nakshatram, and lasts for ten days. The Kumbha Bharani celebration features intricate rituals conducted at the temple.
Historically, the temple is associated with the Ettuveetil Karthakanmar. The eight families linked to this heritage are Alakkodu, Kovilakathu, Puthuparambathu, Velikkakathu, Pulikkal, Kuzhuveli, Puthanveli, and Kunnath Parambu. This lineage is currently referred to as Kaimalmar. They governed the region of Karapuram under the authority of the Kochi kings. It is believed that the Ettuveetil Kaimalmar brought the Chammanad Bhagavathy from Kodungallur, a journey referred to as Avahichu Kondu Varika. Additionally, there is a belief that a Velichappadu, who was traveling with Goddess Bhadrakali, forcibly consecrated her at this location.

ചേർത്തലയിൽ നിന്ന് 16 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയുള്ള ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ചമ്മനാട് ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ഭദ്രകാളിയാണ്. ഇവിടെ ആരാധിക്കുന്ന ദേവത കണ്ണാടി ശിലാപ്രതിഷ്ഠയോടെയാണ്. കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനമായാണ് ഈ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉപദേവതകൾ വസൂരിമാലയും വെളിച്ചപ്പാടുമാണ്. കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ പൂരം നക്ഷത്രം രാത്രിയിൽ നടക്കുന്ന രീതിയിലാണ് വാർഷിക ഉത്സവം നടത്തുന്നത്. 14 ദിവസങ്ങളോളം ഈ ഉത്സവം തുടരുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ കുംഭഭരണി വിപുലമായ ആചാരങ്ങളോടെയാണ് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നത്. ചരിത്രപരമായി, എട്ടുവീട്ടിൽ കർത്താക്കന്മാരുടെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രമാണിത്. ആലക്കോട്, കോവിലകത്ത്, പുതുപ്പറമ്പത്ത്, വേലിക്കകത്ത്, പുളിക്കൽ, കുഴുവേലി, പുത്തൻവേലി, കുന്നത്ത് പറമ്പ് എന്നിവയാണ് ഈ എട്ട് കുടുംബങ്ങൾ. ഇപ്പോൾ ഈ കുടുംബം കൈമൾമാർ എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. കൊച്ചി രാജാക്കന്മാർക്കായി (കരപ്പുറം) ഭരിച്ചിരുന്ന ഈ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം ഏറെ സമ്പന്നമാണ്.
