Irattakulangara Sri Mahadeva Temple is situated 2.5 kilometers north of Ambalapuzha Junction in Alappuzha district. This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Mahadev Shiva.
The Upa Devatas worshipped in the Irattakulangara Sri Mahadeva Temple are Ganapathy and Nagaraja. The temple derives its name from the two ponds located at the front and east side of the shrine. Irattakulangara Ramawaryar, a renowned 18th-century storywriter and painter, was closely associated with the temple.
A disciple of Travancore Maharaja Anizham Thirunal Marthandavarma, Ramawaryar gained fame during the reign of Karthika Thirunal Rama Varma for his exceptional talent in painting. Ramawaryar's ancestral house was situated near the temple, and his family had the kazakam (administrative responsibility) of the Irattakulangara Mahadeva Temple. A devoted follower of Lord Mahadeva, Ramawaryar composed the famous "Kiratam Attakatha" as an offering to the deity.
Although he authored only one story, "Kiratham," it immortalized him in Kerala's literary tradition. Tragically, Ramawaryar was stabbed to death by Ambalakala after presenting his work at the temple. The temple's main festival is Mahashivratri, celebrated with great fervor.
ഇരട്ടകുളങ്ങര ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിലെ അമ്പലപ്പുഴ കച്ചേരിമുക്ക് ജംഗ്ഷനിൽ നിന്ന് 2.5 കിലോമീറ്റർ വടക്കായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഇരട്ടക്കുളങ്ങര ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം, മഹാദേവ ശിവനോട് സമർപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പുരാതന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് ദർശനമായാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഗണപതി-നാഗരാജ എന്നീ ഉപദേവതകൾക്കും ആരാധന ഇവിടെ നടക്കുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് സമീപം രണ്ട് കുളങ്ങൾ നിലനിൽക്കുകയും അതിനാൽ തന്നെ 'ഇരട്ടക്കുളങ്ങര' എന്ന പേര് ലഭിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തതായി പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.
പതിനെട്ടാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന പ്രശസ്ത ആട്ടക്കഥാകൃത്തും ചിത്രകാരനുമായ ഇരട്ടക്കുളങ്ങര രാമവാര്യർ, ഈ സ്ഥലത്തെ പ്രധാന വ്യക്തിത്വം ആയിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം തിരുവിതാംകൂർ മഹാരാജാവ് അനിഴം തിരുനാൾ മാർത്താണ്ഡവർമ്മയുടെ സദസ്യനായിരുന്നു, കൂടാതെ കാർത്തിക തിരുനാൾ രാമവർമ്മയുടെ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ തന്റെ ചിത്രകലയും അഭിവ്യക്തമാക്കി പ്രശംസ നേടി.
രാമവാര്യർ, മഹാദേവൻറെ അനുയായി ആയിരുന്നുവെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അദ്ദേഹം തൻറെ ഇഷ്ടദേവനായി കിരാതം ആട്ടകഥ രചിക്കുകയും അത് ദക്ഷിണമായി മഹാദേവനോട് സമർപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.കിരാതം എന്ന ഒരു ആട്ടക്കഥ മാത്രമാണ് അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതിയത്. ഈ ഒറ്റ ആട്ടകഥയിലൂടെ കേരളഭാഷാസാഹിത്യത്തിൽ അനശ്വര പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നേടിയ കവിയാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം. ഇരട്ടകുളങ്ങരയിൽ ദേവനു ആട്ടക്കഥ സമർപ്പിച്ചു ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും പുറത്തിറങ്ങവെ അമ്പലക്കാള അദ്ദേഹത്തെ കുത്തിക്കൊന്നുവത്രെ. മഹാശിവരാത്രിയാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവം.
