Kizhakke Kottaram Ayyappa Temple is a historic place of worship situated on Kottaram Kshetam Road in the village of Katakarapalli, close to Cherthala in the Alappuzha district.
The leased family comprises five branches: Nedumpuram, Kochumadham, Valyat, Thayathil, and Chidayankadu, with members residing in various locations. The eastern region of the kingdom was governed by the Edappally Swaroop within the Kochi kingdom. Defendants were dispatched to collect taxes on behalf of the Swaroop. An eastern palace was constructed, which included the Ayyappa temple for worship, a residential palace to the south, and an Oottupura to the north.
Kochushankaran Mammon, Padmanabhan Mammon, and Krishnan Mammon are notable figures from earlier generations. It was during the leadership of Padmanabhan Mammon that the Maharaja of Travancore, Marthanda Varma, acquired a portion of land from his lord. Following the Maharaja's directives, the temple underwent renovations to its current form for the benefit of the community. Furthermore, His Majesty conferred upon the family the title of 'Lord,' a designation reserved for governors.
The temple is situated on Kottaram Temple Road in Kadakkarappally village, near Cherthala in Alappuzha, Kerala, where Lord Ayyappa is venerated. Additionally, the Kizhakke Kottaram Dharmasastha Temple, owned by the Pattam family, is located along National Highway 47, between Ottapunna and Thankikavala, slightly west of the school, oriented towards the east.
കിഴക്കേ കൊട്ടാരം അയ്യപ്പ ക്ഷേത്രം
ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിൽ ചേർത്തലയ്ക്കടുത്തുള്ള കടക്കരപ്പള്ളി ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ കൊട്ടാരം ക്ഷേത്രം റോഡിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പുരാതന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് കിഴക്കേ കൊട്ടാരം അയ്യപ്പ ക്ഷേത്രം. കൊച്ചിയിൽനിന്നും ചേർത്തലക്കുള്ള ദേശീയ പാതയിൽ ഒറ്റപ്പുന്നക്കും തങ്കിക്കവലക്കും ഇടയിൽ, സ്‌കൂളിന് അൽപം പടിഞ്ഞാറ് മാറി കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനമായി ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ഇവിടെ അയ്യപ്പനെ പ്രധാന ദേവനായി ആരാധിക്കുന്നു.
കിഴക്കേ കൊട്ടാരം ധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം പാട്ടത്തിൽ തറവാട്ടിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലുള്ളതാണ്. അടുത്തകാലത്ത് കാതലായ നിർമ്മാണപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ നടത്തി ക്ഷേത്രത്തെ മനോഹരമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
നെടുമ്പുറം, കൊച്ചുമഠം, വല്യാട്, തായത്തിൽ, ചിടയൻകാട് എന്നീ അഞ്ച് ശാഖകളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ആളുകളും അവരുടെ കുടുംബാംഗങ്ങളും പാട്ടത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ കിഴക്കൻ ഭാഗം കൊച്ചി രാജ്യത്തിലെ ഇടപ്പള്ളി സ്വരൂപത്തിന്റെ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലായിരുന്നു. നികുതി ശേഖരിക്കുന്നതിനായി ഇവരെ അയച്ചിരുന്നു. കിഴക്കേ കൊട്ടാരത്തിൽ ആരാധനയ്ക്കായി അയ്യപ്പക്ഷേത്രവും, താമസത്തിനായി തെക്കുഭാഗത്ത് കൊട്ടാരവും, വടക്കുഭാഗത്ത് ഊട്ടുപുരയും നിർമ്മിച്ചു.
കൊച്ചുശങ്കരൻ മാമ്മൻ, പത്മനാഭൻ മാമ്മൻ, കൃഷ്ണൻ മാമ്മൻ എന്നിവരാണ് മുൻ തലമുറയിൽ പ്രശസ്തമായ വ്യക്തികൾ. തറവാടിയുടെ തലവനായ പത്മനാഭൻ മാമ്മന്റെ കാലഘട്ടത്തിലാണ് അന്നത്തെ തിരുവിതാംകൂർ മഹാരാജാവ് മാർത്താണ്ഡവർമ്മ തൻറെ തമ്പുരാനിൽ നിന്ന് ഭൂമിയുടെ ഒരു ഭാഗം സ്വന്തമാക്കിയത്. മഹാരാജാവിന്റെ നിർദ്ദേശപ്രകാരം, ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് ഉപകാരപ്രദമായ രീതിയിൽ ക്ഷേത്രം ഇന്നത്തെ രൂപത്തിൽ നവീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. കൂടാതെ, ഗവർണർമാർക്ക് മാത്രമായിരുന്ന 'കർത്താവ്' എന്ന മഹത്ത്വ പദവി പത്മനാഭൻ മാമ്മന്റെ കുടുംബത്തിന് നൽകി ആദരിച്ചു.
