Kurakkavu Devi Temple, situated in the Alappuzha district, is well-known for its miraculous events and the beliefs that surround them. This temple is distinguished by its unique ritual involving the flying of betel leaves.
The principal deities revered in this location include Kirathamurthy, the Mother of Kurakkavu, Shiva, and Bhadrakali. Lord Parameshwar is honored in the form of Kirathamurthy, while Adiparashakti Sri Bhadrakali is venerated as Amma in Kurakkavu. Notably, Parameswaran is believed to be present here in conjunction with Giridevata Bandhan.
Bhadrakali is also worshiped in a gentle manifestation, holding equal significance to Parameshwar. It is said that the deity of Bhadrakali was once worshiped by a yogic Brahmin who resided in this area during ancient times. The temple is thought to have been established here since antiquity. Kurakkavu Devi Temple is renowned for its unique ritual known as Betel leaf flying. This practice, referred to as 'Betal flying,' occurs at Moolasthanam.
The ceremony is conducted with the intention of retrieving lost and cherished possessions of the devotees in an undamaged state. The offering is made in the Kavu adjacent to the temple. Betel leaves are available for purchase at the shops located outside the temple in Moolasthanam. Upon arriving at the Kavu, the betel leaves are placed beneath the head at the Kavu. It is customary to express a wish while releasing the leaves. A minimum of eleven betel leaves may be offered.
Numerous individuals have reported positive outcomes from this practice. Additionally, offerings such as Kozhiyeparath, Suk Samarpanam, Terali Nivedyam, and Pattummalam are conducted at this site. Karyasiddhi Puja holds significant importance at the Kurakkavu Devi Temple. This notable ritual is conducted on the second and final Sunday of each Malayalam month, occurring between 10 am and 11 am. It is widely believed that participating in this puja and offering prayers over the course of 21 Sundays can lead to the fulfillment of one's wishes, which is the reason for its designation as Karyasiddhi Puja.
Participants are required to observe at least one day of fasting and bring specific puja items, including a plantain leaf, a handful of flowers, two neem leaves, a coin, and camphor. A considerable number of devotees gather to take part in this sacred event. Festivities and offerings are conducted here with great splendor. Thiruvathirapongala occurs in the month of Dhanu, while Thiruvutsavam is celebrated during Punartham Nakshatra. Additionally, Shivaratri, Vinayaka Chaturthi, Ramayana Masacharanam, Mandalakam days, and Navratri are also commemorated in this location.
