Malimel Bhadrakali Temple is situated in Kurathikkad, within the Mavelikara region of the Alappuzha district. The principal deity worshipped at this temple is Bhadrakali, who is represented in the form of a calf.
Malimel Devi is believed to bestow blessings for a safe delivery and the well-being of the newborn. The deities Abhishta Varadaini and Aishwarya Pradayini are represented here as Bhadrakali in the form of a calf. The rituals and offerings at this temple, which dates back approximately nine centuries, exhibit significant uniqueness. In Pullelil Nadala, located in Kurathikkat, family members would frequently journey to Sabarimala. A devoted follower of Shasta, while en route to Sabarimala, encountered the goddess and subsequently visited the Ayirur Puthikav temple in Kozhanchery to offer his prayers. Pleased by the devotion of the Karanavas, the goddess chose to accompany him back in the guise of a cow.
Upon reaching Nadala in Pullel, she assured her presence for the well-being of both her family and their descendants. According to the legend, the Karanavars constructed a temple for the goddess, who instructed them to await her arrival in their homeland, where they established rituals in her honor. Alongside Ganapati, Mahadeva, Nagas, and Yakshiamma, Karana is also revered and worshipped here in the form of Yogishvara as a sub-deity. Notably, Malimel is recognized as a temple where the performance of Darikavadham Kathakali is not conducted. The Utsa festival is celebrated here on the day of Revathi in the month of Meenam.
Additionally, Ammummakkav is regarded as the spirit residing within the Malimel temple, embodying the concept of a sub-deity. A significant number of devout women visit Ammummakakkau seeking a safe delivery and the well-being of their infants. The primary ritual at Ammummakav involves the placement of a stone. Pregnant women, prior to reaching seven months of gestation, come to the temple to offer their prayers, after which they select a stone from Ammummakkav to keep. This stone is believed to serve as a protective barrier for both the mother and the unborn child, facilitating a smooth delivery. Following the birth, it is customary to conduct the child's choroon, return to the temple, and present a gold or silver ring to Ammommakkavi, along with the stone. Initially, this practice was observed solely by local residents and the younger members of families. However, it has now attracted many devotees from other regions. On Bharani day, the temple hosts the Ezhunnellat of the Goddess, Sarpapuja for Ayilyam, Utrada Puja for Valyachan Mark, and special pooja for Thiruvonam at Ammummakkavu.

ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിൽ മാവേലിക്കര താലൂക്കിൽ കറ്റാനത്തിനടുത്തുള്ള കുറത്തികാട്-വരേണിക്കൽ റോഡരുകയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രശസ്തമായ മാലിമേൽ ഭഗവതിക്ഷേത്രം ഒരു പ്രധാന ആകർഷണമാണ്.
ശക്തിയുടെ പ്രതീകമായ മാലിമേൽ ഭഗവതി, ഇഷ്ടവരദായിനിയുമാണ്. മാലിമേൽ ദേവി, ഇവിടെ ഭദ്രകാളി പശുക്കിടാവിന്റെ രൂപത്തിൽ എത്തി, ഈ ഗ്രാമത്തിനും ഭക്തർക്കും അനുഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ നൽകുന്നു എന്ന വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്. അഭീഷ്ടങ്ങൾ നൽകുകയും ഐശ്വര്യം പ്രദാനം ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന ദേവി, ആരാധകരുടെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ സൗഭാഗ്യം നിറയ്ക്കുന്നു. ഇവിടെ അമ്മൂമ്മ കാവിൽ ദർശനം നടത്തുന്നത്, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് സുഖപ്രസവത്തിനും കുഞ്ഞിന്റെ ആയുരാരോഗ്യത്തിനും ഏറെ പ്രാധാന്യമർഹിക്കുന്നു.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ഏകദേശം ആറ് നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾ പഴക്കമുള്ളതാണ്. ഒരു പശുക്കിടാവിന്റെ രൂപത്തിൽ യോഗീശ്വരനോടൊപ്പം ദേവി ഇവിടെ എത്തി എന്നതാണ് ഇതിന്റെ ഐതിഹ്യം. ഭദ്രകാളിയാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. പുല്ലേലിൽ നാടാലയിൽ കുടുംബത്തിലെ ഒരു കാരണവർ ശബരിമല ദർശനം നടത്തുന്നത് പതിവായിരുന്നു. ശബരിമലയിലേക്ക് പോകുന്ന വഴിയിൽ കോഴഞ്ചേരിക്കടുത്തുള്ള അയിരൂർ പുതിയകാവ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഭജനമിരിക്കുക പതിവായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭക്തിയിൽ സംപ്രീതിയായ ദേവി അദ്ദേഹത്തോടൊപ്പം ഒരു പശുക്കുട്ടിയായി കൂടെപോന്നു എന്നതാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം.
കാരണവർ താന്ത്രികരീതിയിൽ ദേവിയെ ഇവിടെ കുടിയിരുത്തിയതായി പറയുന്നു. ശ്രീകോവിൽ കിഴക്കോട്ട് അഭിമുഖമാണ്. വടക്ക് പടിഞ്ഞാറ് ഭാഗത്ത് അമ്മൂമ്മക്കാവ് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. അവിടെ അമ്മൂമ്മയോടൊപ്പം രണ്ട് കുടിയിരുപ്പുകൾ കൂടി കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. കിഴക്കോട്ട് ഒരു മൈതാനത്തേക്ക് ക്ഷേത്രം തുറക്കുന്നു. മൈതാനത്തിന്റെ വശത്ത് വിശ്രമകേന്ദ്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ഗണപതിയ്ക്കും മഹാദേവനും നാഗങ്ങൾക്കും യക്ഷിയമ്മയ്ക്കുമൊപ്പം കാരണവരെയും ഇവിടെ യോഗീശ്വര ഭാവത്തിൽ ഉപദേവതകളായി കാണാം.
മീനത്തിലെ രേവതി നാളിലാണ് ഇവിടെ ഉത്സവം നടത്തുന്നത്. അമ്മൂമ്മക്കാവ്, ഉപദേവതാ സങ്കൽപ്പത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി മാലിമേൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു ചൈതന്യമാണ്. സ്ത്രീകൾ ഇവിടെ സുഖപ്രസവത്തിനും കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളുടെ ബാലാരിഷ്ടതകൾ മാറ്റുന്നതിനും എത്തുന്നു. വഴിപാടുകളിൽ പ്രധാനമായത് കല്ലെടുത്തുവക്കൽ എന്ന ചടങ്ങാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രമതിലിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഒരു കല്ല് ഭക്തിയോടെ സ്വീകരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഗർഭിണിയായ സ്ത്രീകൾ ഏഴുമാസത്തിനുമുമ്പ് ഈ ചടങ്ങ് നടത്തണം. സുഖപ്രസവത്തിനുശേഷം കുഞ്ഞിനും ദേവി രക്ഷാകവചമായി ഉണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. ചോറൂൺ ഈ ചടങ്ങിൽ നിർവഹിക്കണം, കൂടാതെ ഈ കല്ല് സ്വർണ്ണ മോതിരത്തോടൊപ്പം തിരികെ നൽകണം. ഭരണി നാളിൽ ദേവിയുടെ എഴുന്നെള്ളത്തും, ആയില്യത്തിനു സർപ്പപൂജയും, ചിങ്ങത്തിൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ വല്യച്ഛന്മാർക്കുള്ള ഉത്രാടപൂജയും പ്രധാനമാണ്.
