Mararikulam Sree Mahadeva Temple is regarded as the sole location in Kerala where Lord Shiva and his consort, Goddess Parvati, are depicted seated face to face. Additionally, it is renowned as a site where devotees' wishes are granted.
According to tradition, this exquisite temple, known as Mararikulam Sree Mahadeva Temple, was constructed by Villimanglam Swami approximately 700 years ago.One of the unique temples where Arattu is celebrated in the ocean, this temple, featuring the Navagraha deity in front of Thirusannidhi, holds a distinguished place.
It is situated at the intersection of the Ambalapuzha and Chertala taluks, as well as the Mararikulam North and South grama panchayats within the Alappuzha district. The principal deities of the temple are Lord Shiva, depicted in a state of intense emotion following the slaying of Maran (Kamadeva), and Goddess Parvati, who is engaged in penance to win Lord Shiva's favor. Both deities are represented with masts. Additionally, the temple houses several sub-deities, including Ganapati, Ayyappan, Subrahmanya, Lord Vishnu, the Navagrahas, Naga Gods, Brahmarakshas, and Yakshi.
The principal event at the temple is the flag hoisting festival, which takes place during the month of Kumbh. This celebration begins with the raising of the flag on Amavasi, followed by a pallivetta on Shivratri, and concludes with an Aarattu on the subsequent Amavasi. Prior to the Thiruvutsavam, rituals such as Dravyakalasabhishekam and the chanting of Panchalakshapanchakshara are performed. Additionally, a grand ezhunnellippu is conducted on the Rishabha Vahanapuram, accompanied by fairs and various temple art forms during the Tiruvutsavam festivities.

മദ്ധ്യകേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പുരാതനവും പ്രശസ്തവുമായ ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളോളം നിലനിൽക്കുന്ന മാരാരിക്കുളം ശ്രീമഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം. ശ്രീമഹാദേവനും ശ്രീപാർവ്വതി ദേവിയും സ്വയംഭൂമാകുന്ന ഭാരതത്തിലെ ഏക ക്ഷേത്രമായതിനാൽ, സമുദ്രത്തിൽ ആറാട്ട് നടക്കുന്ന അപൂർവ്വ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായും, തിരുസന്നിധിയിൽ നവഗ്രഹപ്രതിഷ്ഠയുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രമായതിനാൽ, ഈ ദേവസ്ഥാനം പ്രത്യേകമായ സവിശേഷതകൾക്കു അർഹമാണ്.
ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിൽ അമ്പലപ്പുഴ-ചേർത്തല താലൂക്കുകളുടെയും മാരാരിക്കുളം വടക്ക്-തെക്ക് ഗ്രാമപഞ്ചായത്തുകളുടെയും അതിർത്തിയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ഇത്. മാരനെ (കാമദേവനെ) വധിച്ചശേഷം അത്യുഗ്രഭാവത്തിലിരിക്കുന്ന ശിവഭഗവാനും ഭഗവാനെ പതിയായി ലഭിക്കാൻ തപസ്സിക്കുന്ന പാർവ്വതീദേവിയുമാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠകൾ. കൂടാതെ, ഗണപതി, അയ്യപ്പൻ, സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ, മഹാവിഷ്ണു, നവഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ, നാഗദൈവങ്ങൾ, ബ്രഹ്മരക്ഷസ്സ്, യക്ഷി എന്നിവയും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഉണ്ട്. ശിവനും പാർവ്വതിയും പരസ്പരം അഭിമുഖമായും സ്വയംഭൂവായും കുടികൊള്ളുന്ന കേരളത്തിലെ ഏക ക്ഷേത്രമാണിത്. ശിവൻ കിഴക്കോട്ടും പാർവ്വതി പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ടും ദർശനമായിരിക്കുന്നു.
ഇരുവർക്കും കൊടിമരങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്. കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ കറുത്ത അഷ്ടമിയ്ക്ക് കൊടികയറി ശിവരാത്രിയ്ക്ക് പള്ളിവേട്ട നടത്തി, അമാവാസിയ്ക്ക് ആറാട്ടോടുകൂടി സമാപിക്കുന്ന കൊടിയേറ്റുത്സവമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ആണ്ടുവിശേഷം. തിരുവുത്സവത്തിന് മുമ്പായി ദ്രവ്യകലശാഭിഷേകവും, പഞ്ചലക്ഷപഞ്ചാക്ഷര ജപയജ്ഞവും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. തിരുവുത്സവത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് പ്രത്യേക എഴുന്നെള്ളിപ്പുകൾ, ഋഷഭ വാഹനപ്പുറത്ത് വലിയ എഴുന്നെള്ളിപ്പ്, മേളകൾ, ക്ഷേത്രകലാരൂപങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ ഗംഭീരമായി സംഘടിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
