Punnakeezhil Bhagavathy Temple is located 11 kilometers north of Cherthala in Alappuzha District, approximately 3 kilometers from NH66. The principal deity worshipped at this temple is Bhagavathy.
Thaikkattussery, located in Chertala Taluk, is renowned for its significant Bhadrakali temple. The deity is revered in the tranquil form of Balabhadra. Annually, on the Revathi star day of the Malayalam month of Makaram, the Valiyavilakku ceremony takes place, followed by the Arattu and Thiruvulsavam celebrations on the Aswathi star day.
Additionally, the Pongala festival, celebrated on the Aswathi star day in the Malayalam month of Meenam, along with the Theeyuttu linked to Mandalavritam, are well-known events in the region. The temple gained renown for housing and venerating the sacred sword and anklet of Kodungallur Bhagavathi. Raja Tevar, a devoted follower of Ayyappa, oversaw the temple with the assistance of Makkikal, an army of Devasena, in the region known as Thevarvattam. A temple dedicated to Maalikapurathamma was established for the purpose of conducting daily pujas. Currently, Thevarvattom is administered by the Bhagavathi Devaswom. Kannaki Devi, worshipped by Tevar, is believed to have merged with the Bhagavathi idol.
Consequently, Kodumkali is venerated externally, while Bhagathi is worshipped internally through theeyattu, a form of Maakkipuja. The Maakkisastha temple is maintained with daily rituals performed by the Maakkis. The offerings made for healing ailments have come to be known as Valliyavilakku. Subsequently, this region, including the Pandala kingdom, submitted to Venad. The Kotheswaram temple, as it stands today, was renovated by Kerala Varma, the son of Kotheswara Varma, the king of Venad. This temple, over 2000 years old, was originally constructed by Buddhist monks, and Aghoramoorthy is worshipped here.
Sreerudram Dhara is a significant offering. In the year 1500, the Karakkupuram kingdom was vanquished, leading to the incorporation of territories west of Kochi into Venad. To defend against Portuguese incursions, the king of Venad ceded the northern regions of Chertala to the king of Kochi, resulting in the two temples falling under separate Devaswoms.
The Kotheswaram temple remained with Thiruvithamkoor, while the Bhagavathi temple was associated with Kochi. In 1850, the Kochi king undertook renovations of the temple, including the Kodimaram (flag post). The day of this reinstallation is now commemorated as Aswathi Aarattu. The aarattu-thalappoli festival continues to be celebrated at the Thaikkattusseri Kovilakam temple to this day.
പുന്നക്കീഴിൽ ശ്രീ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം തൈക്കാട്ടുശ്ശേരി
ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിൽ ചേർത്തല താലൂക്കിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന തൈക്കാട്ടുശ്ശേരിയിൽ കരപ്പുറത്തെ പ്രധാന ഭദ്രകാളി ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ഇവിടെ ഭദ്രകാളിയാണ് പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. ഭദ്രകാളിയുടെ ശാന്തസ്വരൂപമായ 'ബാലഭദ്ര'യുടെ രൂപത്തിൽ 'അമ്മ' ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ വാസം ചെയ്യുന്നു. മകരമാസത്തിലെ രേവതി നാളിൽ വലിയ വിളക്കും, അശ്വതി നാളിൽ ആറാട്ടുമായ തിരുവുത്സവവും ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.
മീനമാസത്തിലെ അശ്വതി നാളിൽ നടക്കുന്ന പൊങ്കാലയും, മണ്ഡലവൃതത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് നടത്തുന്ന തീയ്യാട്ടും ഏറെ പ്രശസ്തമാണ്. കൊച്ചിക്ക് തെക്കുള്ള നാട്ടുരാജ്യങ്ങൾ ഒന്നിച്ച് ചേർന്ന് വേണാട് എന്ന രാജ്യം സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നതുവരെ, 'കോദേശം' എന്ന ഈ പ്രദേശം പന്തളം രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ അതിരായിരുന്നു. നാട്ടുരാജ്യങ്ങൾ തമ്മിൽ നിരന്തരം യുദ്ധത്തിലായിരുന്നതിനാൽ, ഈ പ്രദേശത്ത് മാത്രം പന്തളത്ത് രാജാവ്, രാജപ്രതിനിധിയായി നാട്ടുരാജാവിനെ നിയമിച്ച് ഭരണം നടത്തുകയായിരുന്നു.

തേവരുടെ കണ്ണകി പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ഈ സ്ഥലത്തെ ഭഗവതിയിൽ വിലയം പ്രാപിച്ചു. ഇതിന്റെ ഫലമായി കൊടുങ്കാളിക്ക് പുറത്ത് നടയിലും, ഭഗവതിക്ക് അകത്ത് നടയിലും മാക്കിപൂജയായി തീയ്യാട്ട് നടത്തപ്പെട്ടു. മാക്കികൾ നിത്യപൂജ നടത്തി ആരാധിച്ചിരുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ഇവിടെ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന മാക്കി ശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രം. അവർ രോഗശമനത്തിന് നടത്തിയ വഴിപാട് പിന്നീട് വലിയവിളക്ക് എന്ന പേരിൽ പ്രശസ്തമായി. പിന്നീട് ഈ പ്രദേശം ഉൾപ്പെടെ പന്തളത്ത് രാജ്യം ‘വേണാടിന്’ കീഴിൽ വന്നത്. അപ്പോൾ വേണാട് ഭരിച്ചിരുന്ന കോതവർമ്മ രാജാവിന്റെ പുത്രൻ കേരളവർമ്മ, ഇന്ന് കാണുന്ന കോതേശ്വരം ക്ഷേത്രം പുനർനിർമ്മിച്ചതാണ്.
2000 വർഷത്തിന് മുകളിൽ പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ബുദ്ധസന്യാസിമാരാൽ സ്ഥാപിതമായതാണ്. ഇവിടെ അഘോരമൂർത്തിയാണ്. ശ്രീരുദ്രം ധാരയാണ് ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടത്. പിന്നീട് ഈ പ്രദേശം സ്വതന്ത്രമായി കരപ്പുറം എന്ന രാജ്യമായി മാറി.1500-ൽ അമ്പലപ്പുഴയിൽ നടന്ന യുദ്ധത്തിൽ കരപ്പുറം രാജ്യം പരാജയപ്പെട്ടതോടെ, കൊച്ചിയുടെ തെക്കൻ പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ വേണാടിൽ ലയിച്ചു. പോർച്ചുഗീസ് ആക്രമണത്തെ നേരിടാൻ, വേണാട് രാജാവ് ചേർത്തലക്ക് വടക്കുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ കൊച്ചി രാജാവിന് സമ്മാനമായി നൽകി.
ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ, രണ്ട് ദേവസ്വങ്ങൾ രൂപീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു, കോതേശ്വരം തിരുവിതാംകൂറിനോടും ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം കൊച്ചിയോടും ചേർന്നിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട്, 1850-ൽ കൊച്ചി രാജാവ് ഈ സ്ഥലത്തെ സന്ദർശിക്കുകയും കൊടിമരം ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ പുനരുദ്ധരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അന്നത്തെ പുനപ്രതിഷ്ഠ ദിനം ഇന്നത്തെ പ്രശസ്തമായ അശ്വതി ആറാട്ടിന്റെ ദിനമാണ്. ഈ ആറാട്ട് താലപ്പൊലി ആഘോഷം തൈക്കാട്ടുശ്ശേരി കോവിലകത്ത് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഇന്നും തുടരുന്നു.
