Sasthankal Sree Dharma Sastha Temple Perumbalam Alappuzha

Around 1200 years ago, it is believed that Brahmin families settled on Perumbalam Island, establishing many temples and managing the existing ones. The idol of Dharma Sastha in the temple is thought to be Swayamboo, or self-originated, and has a unique spherical shape.

Initially, all properties associated with the Edavanakkad Mana were transferred to the Ariveliyil Nair family when the Brahmin family vacated the area. The original temple was situated where there are now backwaters, but a catastrophic flood in 1341 caused the eastern boundary to break, turning the Perumbalam canal into part of the Vembanad backwater, which led to the temple’s destruction. Later, the temple was relocated to the southern side of the current site, but it was once again affected by a fire, splitting the main idol in half, creating the "Vedakkallil," which is now venerated by devotees visiting Sabarimala, who offer coconuts in devotion.

The temple’s final location was to the north, where it was reconstructed and reinstalled. An intriguing legend surrounds the temple's history. A woman from the Ariveliyil family, outcast by her family and community, was found in prayer within the temple premises. An Arayan from the Dheevara community married her, and they had a son, Unni Unniran. After a disagreement with his father, Unni Unniran left for Thrikunnapuzha, where he educated local children, trained them in Kalari, and became a devoted follower of Thrikunnapuzha Sastha. Years later, he returned to Perumbalam, and it is believed that the Thrikunnapuzha Sastha deity accompanied him spiritually. Since then, Thrikunnapuzha Sastha has been considered present in this temple.

To honor this connection, a rally to Thrikunnapuzha temple is held before the festival begins, where puja is offered, and "Rice and Flowers" are brought back to Perumbalam for the flag-hoisting ceremony. Traditionally, until 1986, during the Mandala period, daily pujas were conducted from the first of Vrichika month until the 25th, after which a holy knot would be tied to the head of the family to initiate the 'Kalamezhuthum Paattum' ritual, concluding with a Sharakol procession. From 1986 to 2005, the festival was held in Vrichikam month, with flag-hoisting on the 26th and concluding with the Aarattu in Dhanu. Since Brahmasree Kandar Rajeevar’s appointment in 2006, the festival now ends with the Aarattu on the Uthram star of Vrichikam month. The temple’s administration is overseen by the Njayarukad family and the Perumbalam Trust (AKDS).

ശാസ്താങ്കൽ ശ്രീ ധർമ്മ ശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം

പെരുമ്പളം, ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിലെ വേമ്പനാട് കായലിന്റെ ചുറ്റുപാടിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു ദ്വീപാണ്. ഈ ദ്വീപിൽ ഏകദേശം 30 ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു, അതിൽ പ്രധാനമായത് ശാസ്താങ്കൽ ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരാൻ ജങ്കാറും, ഫെറിയും മാത്രമാണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ട ഗതാഗത മാർഗങ്ങൾ. ആലപ്പുഴ ഭാഗത്തുനിന്നും പാണാവള്ളി പെരുമ്പളം ഫെറിയിലൂടെ, തൃപ്പൂണിത്തുറ ഭാഗത്തുനിന്നും പൂത്തോട്ട ഫെറിയിലൂടെ പെരുമ്പളം ദ്വീപിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരാം. ദ്വീപിലെ റോഡുകളിൽ എല്ലാ ഗതാഗതവും ലഭ്യമാണ്. വർഷങ്ങളായി പെരുമ്പളം ദ്വീപിൽ താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന ബ്രാഹ്മണന്മാർ നിരവധി ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും, നിലവിലുള്ള ആരാധനാലയങ്ങളുടെ മേൽനോട്ടം വഹിക്കുകയും ആരാധന നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.

ശ്രീ ധർമ്മ ശാസ്താവിന്റെ ഗോളാകൃതിയിലുള്ള ശിലാപ്രതിഷ്ഠ സ്വയംഭൂ എന്ന നിലയിൽ കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. എടവനക്കാട് മനയുടെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രവും സ്വത്തും ആയിരുന്നു. തലമുറകൾ കടന്നുപോകുമ്പോൾ, അരിവേലിൽ എന്ന നായർ കുടുംബത്തിന് ക്ഷേത്രവും സ്വത്തും ദാനം ചെയ്ത് ബ്രാഹ്മണ കുടുംബം നാട് വിട്ടു. ആദ്യകാലത്ത് ക്ഷേത്രം നിലവിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന സ്ഥലം, ഇന്ന് കായലായിത്തീരുന്ന സ്ഥലമാണ്. 1341-ൽ ഉണ്ടായ അതിഭയങ്കരമായ വെള്ളപ്പൊക്കത്തിൽ, വെറും തോട് [കാളകളെ കുളിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന] മാത്രമായിരുന്ന പെരുമ്പളത്തിൻറെ കിഴക്ക് ഭാഗം മലവെള്ളത്തിന്റെ കുത്തൊഴുക്കിൽ മുറിഞ്ഞു വേമ്പനാട്ട് കായലിലേക്ക് മാറി.ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ ക്ഷേത്രം കുത്തൊഴുക്കിൽ തകർന്നു. പിന്നീട്, നിലവിലുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് തെക്കുവശത്ത് പുനർനിർമ്മാണം നടത്തി. എന്നാൽ, ഈ ക്ഷേത്രവും അഗ്നി ബാധിച്ച് നശിച്ചു.

ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വിഗ്രഹം തീയിൽ പിളർന്നുവീണു. ഇന്ന് ശബരിമല ദർശനത്തിനായി പുറപ്പെടുന്ന അയ്യപ്പഭക്തന്മാർ തിരിവെച്ച് നാളികേരം ഉടച്ച് നമസ്കരിക്കുന്നത് ഈ 'വേദക്കല്ലിൽ' ആണ്. അവിടെ നിന്ന് വടക്ക് മാറി, ഇപ്പോൾ കാണുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രം തീ പടർന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് പണിതായിരുന്നു, അവിടെ ആരാധന നടത്തപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. അറിവേലിൽ, തറവാട്ടിലെ ഒരു സ്ത്രീ ഏതെങ്കിലും കാരണത്താൽ ഭ്രഷ്ട് കൽപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട് കുടുംബത്തിലും സമുദായത്തിലും നിന്ന് പുറത്താക്കപ്പെട്ട് ക്ഷേത്രനടയിൽ വീണു കിടന്നു പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുന്ന അവളെ "അരയൻ" എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ധീവര സമുദായത്തിലെ ഒരു യുവാവ് ഭാര്യയായി സ്വീകരിച്ചു.അവരിൽ ഉണ്ടായ പുത്രൻ ആണ് ഉണ്ണി ഉണ്ണിരാൻ.

അദ്ദേഹം അച്ഛനുമായി പിണങ്ങി വീട് വിട്ട് തൃക്കുന്നപ്പുഴയിലേക്ക് പോയി. അവിടെ ധാരാളം ധീവര ഭവനങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവിടെ കുട്ടികളെ അക്ഷരവും കളരിയും പഠിപ്പിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹം തൃക്കുന്നപ്പുഴ ശാസ്താവിന്റെ ഭക്തനായി മാറുകയും, വർഷങ്ങൾക്കുശേഷം പെരുമ്പളത്തിലേക്ക് തിരികെ എത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. തൃക്കുന്നപ്പുഴ ശാസ്താവും അദ്ദേഹത്തോടൊപ്പം പോയെന്നു പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. അന്നുമുതൽ തൃക്കുന്നപ്പുഴ ശാസ്താവ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ താമസിക്കുന്നു എന്നതാണ് വിശ്വാസം. ഇന്നും ഉത്സവത്തിന് മുമ്പ് ഓടി വള്ളത്തിൽ തൃക്കുന്നപ്പുഴ ശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പോയി വഴിപാടുകൾ അർപ്പിച്ച് 'അരിയും പൂവും' കൊണ്ടുവന്ന ശേഷം ഉത്സവത്തിന് കൊടി കയറുന്നു.

1986 വരെ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ വൃശ്ചിക മാസത്തിലെ 1-ാം തിയതി മുതൽ 25-ാം തിയതി വരെ നിത്യപൂജയും, 26-ാം തിയതി കുടുംബ കാരണവരുടെ കയ്യിൽ കാപ്പ് കെട്ടി ധനു സംക്രമം വരെ 'കളമെഴുത്തും പാട്ടും' നടത്തപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. ധനു സംക്രമത്തിന് 'ശര ക്കോൽ' എഴുന്നള്ളിച്ച് ഉത്സവം ആഘോഷിക്കുകയും, മറ്റ് മലയാളമാസ സംക്രമ ദിനങ്ങളിൽ മാത്രമേ പൂജ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളൂ. 1986 മുതൽ 2005 വരെ വൃശ്ചിക മാസത്തിലെ 26-ാം തിയതി കൊടികയറി ധനു സംക്രമത്തിന് ആറാട്ടോടുകൂടി ഉത്സവം സമാപിച്ചിരുന്നു. 2006 മെയ് 7-ന് ബ്രഹ്മശ്രീ കണ്ഠർ രാജീവർ അവറുകൾ പുന:പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ചെയ്തതിനു ശേഷം, വൃശ്ചിക മാസത്തിലെ ഉത്രം നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ ആറാട്ടോടുകൂടി ഉത്സവം സമാപിക്കുന്നു.
