Thalavadi Subramaniaswamy Temple, commonly referred to as Munch Murugan Temple, is among the oldest temples located in the Alappuzha district. Historical accounts suggest that the temple dates back over three hundred years.
The Thalavadi temple holds significant importance among devotees of Subrahmanya and is often referred to as the Southern Palani. This temple plays a crucial role in the observance of Skandashashti rituals. Located in the Alappuzha district, the Thalavadi Subramaniaswamy temple is distinct from other temples, each of which has its own unique beliefs and practices.
Here, Lord Murugan is worshipped in the form of Balamurugan, and the temple is commonly known as the 'Munch Murugan' Temple. The practice of offering Munch at this temple is described as rare and exceptional. A notable incident occurred when parents brought their ailing two-and-a-half to three-year-old son to the temple seeking a cure for his illness. The priest advised them to make an offering to the deity. While the parents presented oil and flowers, the boy insisted on offering Munch at the sanctum sanctorum. Subsequently, it was observed that the Munch was no longer visible. The boy believed that Murugan had accepted his offering, and he eventually recovered from his illness.
This event led to the widespread practice of offering Munch to Murugan among devotees. Adults, like children, also present Munch to Murugan and engage in prayer. Currently, approximately ten thousand visitors attend the temple each day. Devotees share numerous anecdotes about their wishes being granted through the offering of Munch. This tradition, which began long ago, continues to be upheld by the local community.
The people firmly believe that by offering Munch and praying, Murugan will respond to their requests and fulfill their desires. Devotees here participate in various rituals, including the Munch garland, Munch offering, Munch Thulabharam, and Munch prasadam. A five-rupee Munch chocolate is presented as an offering. Devotees contribute anything from a single Munch to multiple packets of Munch. Infants are also honored with Thulabharam using Munch chocolate. Additionally, Munch is distributed as Prasad during the annual festival held in January.
തലവടി സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം
ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിലെ പുരാതന ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായ തലവടി സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം, ആലപ്പുഴ റെയിൽവേ സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ നിന്ന് 7 കിലോമീറ്ററും, ടൗണിൽ നിന്ന് 4 കിലോമീറ്ററും അകലെയാണ്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം ഏകദേശം 400 വർഷത്തിലധികം പഴക്കമുള്ളതാണെന്ന് പഴമക്കാർ പറയുന്നു. സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ ഭക്തർ ഇടയിൽ പ്രത്യേക പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം, തെക്കൻ പഴനി എന്ന പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
സ്കന്ദഷഷ്ഠിക്ക് അത്യന്തം പ്രധാനമാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം. വിവിധ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള വിശിഷ്ടവും രുചികരവുമായ പ്രസാദങ്ങൾ ഇവിടെ ലഭ്യമാണ്. വിശ്വാസങ്ങളും ആചാരങ്ങളും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ മറ്റ് ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളേക്കാൾ, ആലപ്പുഴയിലെ തലവടി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രസാദങ്ങൾ കുറച്ചുകൂടി വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ്. തലവടി സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകതയാണ് ഇവിടെ നടക്കുന്ന മഞ്ച് വഴിപാടുകൾ. നെസ്ലെ മഞ്ച് വഴിപാട് നടത്തുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം അപൂർവ്വമായതും, കേട്ടുകേൾവിയില്ലാത്തതുമായ രീതിയിൽ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
പതിറ്റാണ്ടുകളോളം സാധാരണ മുരുകക്ഷേത്രമായിരുന്ന തലവടി, ഒരു നാൾ അന്യമായ രീതിയിൽ മഞ്ച് മുരുകന്റെ ക്ഷേത്രമായി മാറിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. മഞ്ച് ചോക്ലേറ്റ് ഉപയോഗിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങിയതിന്റെ കുറച്ച് വർഷങ്ങൾക്കുള്ളിൽ തന്നെ ഈ വഴിപാട് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ആരംഭിച്ചു. ഒരു കുട്ടി തൻറെ കയ്യിലിരുന്ന മഞ്ച് മുരുകന്റെ നടയ്ക്കൽ സമർപ്പിച്ചപ്പോൾ, പിന്നീട് ആ മഞ്ച് കാണാതായതോടെ ഇവിടെ വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കം സംഭവിച്ചു. മുരുകനോട് അപേക്ഷിച്ച് ആരാധനയ്‌ക്കായി മഞ്ച് സമർപ്പിക്കുന്ന പതിവ് നിലനിൽക്കുന്നതോടെ, കുട്ടികളുമെത്തിയാൽ മുതിർന്നവരും മുരുകനോട് മഞ്ച് സമർപ്പിച്ച് പ്രാർത്ഥന നടത്തുന്നു.
ഇന്ന് പ്രതിദിനം പതിനായിരത്തിലേറെ മഞ്ച് വഴിപാടായി സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്നാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്, മുരുകന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹം ലഭിച്ച അനുഭവങ്ങൾ വിശ്വാസികൾക്ക് പങ്കുവയ്ക്കാനുണ്ട്. അന്ന് ആരംഭിച്ച ആചാരം ഇന്നു വരെ ഇവിടത്തെ വിശ്വാസികൾ തുടരുകയും മുരുകനോട് മഞ്ച് വെച്ചാൽ അപേക്ഷ നിറവേറുമെന്ന ഉറച്ച വിശ്വാസം പുലർത്തുന്നു.
മഞ്ചുമാല, മഞ്ച് വഴിപാട്, മഞ്ച് തുലാഭാരം, മഞ്ച് പ്രസാദം തുടങ്ങിയ വഴിപാടുകൾ ഭക്തർ നടത്തിവരുന്നു. അഞ്ചു രൂപയുടെ മഞ്ച് ചോക്ലേറ്റ് ഇവിടെ വഴിപാടായി സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നു, ഓരോരുത്തരും ഒന്നോ രണ്ടോ മുതൽ പാക്കറ്റുകണക്കിന് മഞ്ച് വരെ സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നു. കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങൾക്കുള്ള തുലാഭാരവും മഞ്ച് ചോക്ലേറ്റ് ഉപയോഗിച്ച് നടത്തുകയും ജനുവരിയിൽ ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവ പ്രസാദമായി മഞ്ച് നൽകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.
