Sri Maayapiran Perumal Temple is esteemed as one of the 108 Divya Desam temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is also known as the Thirupuliyoor Mahavishnu Temple.
Thirupuliyoor Mahavishnu Temple is primarily dedicated to Lord Krishna, who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This temple is recognized as one of the five ancient temples located in Chengannur, Kerala, and it is traditionally believed to have been constructed by Bheema, the second of the Pancha Pandavas. Bheema is regarded as the most powerful among the Pancha Pandavas.
The main deity of this Sri Maayapiran Perumal Temple is Lord Maayapiran (Lord Vishnu), depicted in a standing position facing east, while the goddess worshipped here is Goddess Porkodi Nachiyaar. A notable feature of this temple is the presence of the Gatha, a weapon associated with Bheema. Thirupuliyoor Mahavishnu Temple houses the deities of the Sapta Rishis, which include the saints Atthri, Vasishtar, Kaasyapar, Gouthamar, Bharadwajar, Vishvamitra, and Jamadagni. These revered figures are believed to have engaged in selfless service (Seva) alongside goddess Porkodi Nachiyaar to Lord Emperumaan (Lord Vishnu).
It is also held that the Sapta Rishis attained moksha (liberation) through their devotion to Lord Emperumaan. The temple features two significant Theerthams (temple tanks): Pragnya saras theertham and poonsunai theertham. The Vimanam (tower above the sanctum sanctorum) is referred to as Purushothama Vimanam.
The temple celebrates two principal festivals: Vaikunta Ekadasi and Thiruvonam, with the main annual festival lasting ten days each year during the month of Medam (April/May). The administration of the temple falls under the jurisdiction of the Travancore Devaswom Board.

ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിൽ ചെങ്ങന്നൂരിൽ നിന്നും ചെറിയനാട് വഴി മാവേലിക്കര ബസിൽ 3.5 കിമി യാത്ര ചെയ്താൽ പുലിയൂരിൽ ഇറങ്ങണം. അവിടെ ഇലഞ്ഞിമേൽ റോഡിലേക്ക് തിരിഞ്ഞാൽ കാണുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രം 'ഭീമസേന തിരുപ്പതി' എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന തൃപ്പുലിയൂർ മഹാവിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ഇത് ശ്രീ മായാപിരൻ പെരുമാൾ ക്ഷേത്രം എന്ന പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഭാരതത്തിലെ 108 വൈഷ്ണവ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടതും പഞ്ചപാണ്ഡവ ക്ഷേത്രമെന്ന നിലയിൽ പ്രശസ്തമായ പുരാതന ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്.
തിരുപ്പുലിയൂർ മഹാവിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രം മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ 108 ദിവ്യദേശങ്ങളിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു പ്രധാന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ശ്രീ മായാപിരൻ പെരുമാൾ ക്ഷേത്രം, വിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ കൃഷ്ണാവതാരത്തെ സമർപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. വൈഷ്ണവ ധർമ്മസിദ്ധാന്തത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായ നാലായിര ദിവ്യപ്രബന്ധത്തിൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ മഹത്വം പ്രതിപാദിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആഴ്വാർ സന്യാസിമാരായ നമ്മാഴ്വാർ, തിരുമംഗൈ ആഴ്വാർ എന്നിവരുടെ മംഗളാസനം (ഭക്തിഗാനങ്ങൾ) എന്നിവയിലും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം പരാമർശിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. തൃപ്പുലിയൂരിലെ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സപ്തർഷികളാൽ സ്ഥാപിതമായതായും, വ്യാഘ്രപാദമഹർഷി ഇവിടെ വസിച്ച് പൂജകൾ നടത്തിയതായും ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങളിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ഇതിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ, ഈ സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെ പേര് 'പുലിയൂർ' എന്നതാണ്. ഈ സ്ഥലത്തെ പ്രധാനമായ മൂർത്തി വിഷ്ണുവാണ്. വിഗ്രഹം മൂന്ന് അടിയോളം ഉയരമുള്ള പീഠത്തിന്മേലാണ് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. വിഗ്രഹത്തിന്റെ ഉയരം നാലടി വരെയാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രം കിഴക്കോട്ടു ദർശനമായാണ് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. മനോഹരമായ ചുമർ ചിത്രങ്ങളും ദാരുശിൽപ്പങ്ങളും കൊണ്ട് പ്രശസ്തമായ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് മുന്നിൽ മയദത്തം എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഭീമൻറെ ഗദ സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
കേരളത്തിനു പുറത്തുനിന്നും നിരവധി തീർത്ഥാടകരെ ആകർഷിക്കുന്ന ഈ സ്ഥലം, നിത്യേന അഞ്ചുപൂജകളും മൂന്നുശീവേലികളുമാണ് നടത്തുന്നത്. പാൽപ്പായസമാണ് ഇവിടെ പ്രധാനമായ വഴിപാട്. വൈകുണ്ഠ ഏകാദശിയും തിരുവോണവുമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ആഘോഷങ്ങൾ. ഓരോ വർഷവും മകരമാസത്തിൽ പത്തു ദിവസങ്ങളോളം നീണ്ടു നിൽക്കുന്ന കൊടിയേറ്റുത്സവം നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. അത്തം നാളിൽ കൊടികയറി, തിരുവോണനാളിൽ പമ്പാനദിയിൽ ആറാട്ടോടെ സമാപിക്കുന്നു. മകര സങ്ക്രമത്തിന് കാവടിയാട്ടവും ഉണ്ട്.
