Thrikkunnappuzha Sreedharma Sastha Temple is situated in the village of Trikunnapuzha, positioned along the coastline to the north of Karthikapalli taluk within the Alappuzha district.
Thrikkunnappuzha Sreedharma Sastha Temple is regarded as the original site of Sabarimala Ayyappa. Festivals are celebrated during the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam. Devotees from far and wide continue to visit the Thrikkunnappuzha Dharmasastha Temple via both land and waterways. Notably, worshippers from Idappally engage in a unique practice, presenting offerings that include fish, shells, and ‘shoolam’ crafted from gold and silver. Upon the completion of these offerings, the chief priest distributes paddy seeds to the devotees.
These individuals then return to their homeland, scattering the paddy seeds over the backwaters. In addition to the principal idol of Dharmasastha, accompanied by his wife and child, the temple also houses numerous ‘upadevathas’ or subordinate deities. This residence of Balasubrahmania is believed to be approximately 2000 years old. When offerings are presented, this deity is regarded with an importance comparable to that of Dharmasastha. Additionally, the other subordinate deities worshipped here include Durga, Yakshi, Bhadra, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi, Ganapathi, Shiva, Vishnu, Brahmarakshass, and Parashurama, who is revered as Yogeshwara.
The principal festival at the Thrikkunnappuzha Sree Dharmasastha Temple takes place during the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam. The festivities are structured so that the ‘Aaraattu’, which is the sacred bathing of the deity, typically occurs on the final day of the festival, coinciding with the ‘Uthram’ day in the month of Vrishchikam. Among the various offerings made at the Thrikkunnappuzha Sree Dharmasastha Temple, the ‘Kalabhaabhishekam’ stands out as the most significant. Other notable offerings include the ‘Udayasthamaya pooja’, ‘Ada’, ‘Aravana appam’, ‘Mahaganapathi homam’, ‘Bhagavathi seva’, ‘Panchamritham’, ‘Dhaara’, and ‘Thulaappayasam’. Additionally, the ‘Mahamrithyunjaya homam’ and ‘Shaneeshwara homam’ are performed here, serving as effective remedies for ‘grahadosha’ and ‘pithrudosha’.

കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രധാന തീർത്ഥാടന കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായ തൃക്കുന്നപ്പുഴ ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യം 'പടിഞ്ഞാറെ പതിനെട്ടാംപടി' എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നതിലൂടെ കൂടുതൽ വ്യക്തമാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ധർമ്മശാസ്താവിന്റെ പ്രധാന വിഗ്രഹം കൂടാതെ, ഭാര്യയും കുട്ടിയും ചേർന്ന്, നിരവധി 'ഉപദേവതകൾ' അല്ലെങ്കിൽ കീഴ്വഴക്കമുള്ള ദേവതകൾ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ബാലസുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ വിഗ്രഹം 'ശ്രീകോവിൽ' എന്ന വൃത്താകൃതിയിലുള്ള വാസസ്ഥലത്താണ് സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ബാലസുബ്രഹ്മണ്യന്റെ ഈ വാസസ്ഥലം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളായി നിലനിൽക്കുന്നതാണ്. വഴിപാടുകൾ നടത്തുമ്പോൾ, സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യദേവനും ധർമ്മശാസ്താവും സമാനമായ പ്രാധാന്യം നേടുന്നു. ദുർഗ്ഗ, യക്ഷി, ഭദ്ര, നാഗരാജാവ്, നാഗയക്ഷി, ഗണപതി, ശിവൻ, വിഷ്ണു, ബ്രഹ്മരക്ഷസ്സ്, പരശുരാമൻ, യോഗേശ്വരൻ എന്നിവരാണ് ഇവിടെ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന മറ്റ് ഉപദേവതകൾ.
ശബരിമല അയ്യപ്പന്റെ 'മൂലസ്ഥാനം' എന്ന നിലയിൽ തൃക്കുന്നപ്പുഴ ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. മലയാള മാസമായ വൃശ്ചികത്തിൽ ഉത്സവങ്ങൾ ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ദൂരദേശങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ആരാധകർ ഇപ്പോഴും കരയിലൂടെയും ജലമാർഗ്ഗങ്ങളിലൂടെയും തൃക്കുന്നപ്പുഴ ധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എത്തി ദർശനം നടത്തുന്നു. ഇടപ്പള്ളിയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ആരാധകർക്ക് പ്രത്യേകമായ ഒരു ആചാരം ഉണ്ട്. അവരുടെ വഴിപാടുകളിൽ മത്സ്യം, ശംഖുകൾ, സ്വർണ്ണവും വെള്ളിയും കൊണ്ട് നിർമ്മിച്ച 'ശൂലം' എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.

തൃക്കുന്നപ്പുഴ ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വഴിപാടുകളിൽ കളഭാഭിഷേകമാണ്. ഉദയാസ്തമയ പൂജ, അട, അരവണ അപ്പം, മഹാഗണപതി ഹോമം, ഭഗവതി സേവ, പഞ്ചാമൃതം, ധാര, തുലാപ്പായസം എന്നിവയും ഇവിടെ പ്രധാനമായ വഴിപാടുകളാണ്. 'മഹാമൃത്യുഞ്ജയ ഹോമം'യും 'ശനീശ്വര ഹോമം'യും ഗ്രഹദോഷത്തിനും പിതൃദോഷത്തിനും മികച്ച പ്രതിവിധികളായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
