Thriperur Kulangara Subramaniaswamy Temple is situated on the Chengannur Mavelikkara Road within the Alappuzha district and is dedicated to Lord Subramanya.
This temple is distinguished by the fact that Utsava Kodiyettam takes place on Thaipuyam, in contrast to many other Subrahmanya temples where Arattu is observed on the same day. The Thaipooyam festival honors Lord Subramanya, the son of Lord Shiva. On this occasion, Goddess Parvati presents the Vel to Muruga to vanquish the demon Tharakasura.
One of the festival's main attractions is the kavadiyattom, which is characterized by a vibrant display of colors. There are two prevalent legends regarding kavadiyattom; one suggests that it represents the dance of the Lord's attendants, urging him to engage in battle against the demon, as he possesses the divine spear. The Thaipooyam festival commences with a flag hoisting ceremony. The shrine is traditionally adorned with plantain, tender coconut leaves, flowers, foliage, and traditional lamps and lights. The kavadiyattom, characterized by its vibrant array of colors, stands as one of the festival's principal attractions. The term 'kavadi' signifies a burden, and the dancers carry their burdens upon their shoulders, performing to honor Lord Subramanya.
Devotees, adorned with kavadis, twirl to the captivating rhythms of the chenda and cymbals, bringing joy to the spectators. During the months of January and February, the temple grounds are filled with thousands of devotees who travel from various regions to experience this magnificent festival. The dance ritual commences in the morning, with various groups, such as ambalakkavadi and pookkavadi, organized according to the shape of the kavadi, which is a beautifully decorated wooden arch carried on the shoulders. Prior to engaging in the kavadiyattom, the dancers adhere to specific rituals, including a 41-day period of penance that involves abstaining from alcohol and non-vegetarian food. It is believed that through this dedication, Lord Subramanya will alleviate their burdens.
