Valavanadu Puthenkavu Devi Temple is situated in Valavanadu, close to Mararikulam in the state of Kerala. This sacred site is devoted to Goddess Bhagavathi, also known as Bhadra Kali.
The annual Padayani festival at this temple is celebrated with grandeur on the Uthram nakshatra in the Malayalam month of Kumbham. The temple complex features two sanctum sanctorums with separate flagposts, dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and Goddess Bhadra.
Additionally, there are 14 subsidiary deities, including Lord Shiva, Ganapati, Subramania, Brahmarakshas, Sarpam, Lord Krishna, Kodum Kali, Ayyappan, Anjaneya Swami, Naga Raja, Naga Yakshi, Vellam Bhagavathy Maar, Kandakarnan, Arukula Swami, and Sree Narayana Guru Deva. The festival highlights include Kuruthola Padayani, Chuttu Padayani, Vela Thullal, and Kozhianna Ezhunellippu. The temple is adorned with traditional decorations, such as plantain, coconut leaves, flowers, leaves, lamps, and lights.
The vibrant celebrations feature a grand procession with pageantry, floats, pulling of kuthira, and colorful displays, culminating with the Arattu ritual on the final day, during which the utsava murti (festival idol) is taken for a ceremonial bath. Throughout the festival period, unique offerings are made to the deities. Other significant observances in the temple include the Makaravilakku day with special pujas and lamp lighting. The Kalavarshika is observed in Makaram month, while the Thali Charthu ritual is held in Kumbha Masam.
The Pathamudayam festival, celebrated on Meda Masam 10 (April 23 or April 24), is another notable occasion. The temple also observes the annual Sapthaham ritual in Karkidaka Masam (July - August), along with Karkidaka Vavu Bali and Pitru Tarpanam, attended by numerous devotees honoring their ancestors. Ashtami Rohini is observed traditionally, reflecting the temple's rich heritage and devotion. This temple's annual calendar of festivals and rituals showcases the deep-rooted cultural significance and spiritual vibrancy central to Kerala’s traditions.
വളവനാട് പുത്തൻകാവ് ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രം
ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിലെ മാരാരിക്കുളത്തിനടുത്തുള്ള പ്രശസ്തമായ വളവനാട് പുത്തൻകാവ് ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രം വളവനാട്ടിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ഭദ്രകാളി ദേവി (ഭഗവതി) പ്രധാന ദേവിയായാണ് ഇവിടെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നത്. ക്ഷേത്ര സമുച്ചയത്തിൽ ദുർഗ്ഗാദേവിയെയും ഭദ്രാദേവിയെയും ആരാധിക്കുന്ന രണ്ടു ശ്രീകോവിലുകളുണ്ട്, കൂടാതെ രണ്ടു കൊടിമരങ്ങളും. 14 ഉപദേവതകളും ഇവിടെ ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു; അവയിൽ ശിവൻ, ഗണപതി, സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ, ബ്രഹ്മരക്ഷസ്, സർപ്പത്താന്മാർ, കൃഷ്ണൻ, കൊടും കാളി, അയ്യപ്പൻ, ആഞ്ജനേയസ്വാമി, നാഗരാജാവ്, നാഗയക്ഷി, വെള്ളം ഭഗവതിമാർ, കണ്ഡാകർണ്ണൻ, അറുകുല സ്വാമി, ശ്രീനാരായണ ഗുരുദേവൻ എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.
വാർഷിക പടയണി ഉത്സവം മലയാള കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ ഉത്രം നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ ആചരിക്കുന്നു. ഉത്സവത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ചുള്ള കമ്പക്കെട്ട് കാണാൻ നാടിൻറെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള അനേകം ഭക്തർ എത്തുന്നു.
കുരുത്തോല പടയണി, ചൂട്ടു പടയണി, വേല തുള്ളൽ, കോഴിയന്ന എഴുന്നള്ളിപ്പ് എന്നിവ കൊണ്ട് വളവനാട് പുത്തൻകാവ് ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രം പ്രശസ്തമാണ്. കോഴി അന്നത്തിൻറെ അകമ്പടിയിൽ വേല പടയണി നടത്തപ്പെടുന്ന അപൂർവ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ഇത്. ഉത്സവത്തിന് മുൻപ് കുരുത്തോല പടയണിയും ചൂട്ടു പടയണിയും വിപുലമായി ആചരിക്കുന്നു. പള്ളുരുത്തി അഴകിയകാവ് ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലും സമാനമായ ചൂട്ടുപടയണി പ്രചാരത്തിലുള്ളതാണ്.ഉത്സവത്തിന് വൈഭവം നൽകുന്നതിനായി മേളം, പാരമ്പര്യ കലാരൂപങ്ങൾ, സംഗീതം, നൃത്തം എന്നിവ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രം വാഴ, തെങ്ങിൻ കുരുത്തോലകൾ, പൂക്കൾ, ഇലകൾ, പരമ്പരാഗത നിലവിളക്കുകൾ എന്നിവകൊണ്ട് അലങ്കരിക്കുന്നു. ഘോഷയാത്ര, ഫ്ലോട്ടുകൾ, കുതിരവിരുന്ന്, വർണ്ണാഭമായ ഘോഷയാത്ര എന്നിവയും ഉത്സവത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.
ആറാട്ടോടെ ഉത്സവം സമാപിക്കും മകരവിളക്ക് നാൾ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന ദിനമാണ്. അന്നേ ദിവസം പ്രത്യേക പൂജകളും വിളക്കുകളും നടത്തുന്നു. മകരമാസത്തിൽ കലശവും, കംഭമാസത്തിൽ താലി ചാർത്തൽ ചടങ്ങും നടക്കുന്നു. മേടമാസം 10-ാം തീയതി പത്താമുദയം എന്ന പ്രത്യേക ഉത്സവവും ആചരിക്കുന്നു. വാർഷിക സപ്താഹം കർക്കിടകമാസത്തിലാണ് നടത്തുന്നത്. കർക്കിടക വാവുബലി, പിതൃതർപ്പണം എന്നിവയിൽ നൂറുകണക്കിന് ഭക്തർ പങ്കാളികളാകും. അഷ്ടമി രോഹിണി ശോഭായാത്ര അടക്കമുള്ള പാരമ്പര്യ മാർഗ്ഗങ്ങൾ പാലിച്ച് ആചരിക്കുന്നു, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ വിശുദ്ധി നിലനിർത്തിക്കൊണ്ട് ഭക്തിസാന്ദ്രമായ ആഘോഷം നടത്തുന്നു.
