At Mannar Kuttiyil Junction in Alappuzha district, along the Chennithala-Thripperunthura road, lies the ancient Vishwarserikkara Subramania Swami Temple, located on the south side of the road and facing east.
This temple is one of the few in Kerala dedicated to a Kumara deity. According to tradition, the bull of Lord Shiva rested in this region, which subsequently became known as Rishabhavarsserikara, later evolving into Vishavarsserikara. It is believed that Lord Shiva positioned the irate goddess to the west, while his brother Subramanian was placed to the east.
The Urumadam Devi temple is situated slightly to the east of this location. Historically, the area to the north of the Subrahmanya Swami Temple was a garden. Special offerings are traditionally made at the Subrahmanya Swamy Temple, particularly prior to the Urgam Pujas conducted at the Urumatham Temple. The idol of Subrahmanya was revered by the Ottail Manas, a family of Tamil Brahmins who resided in this area during ancient times. Approximately 80 years ago, the damaged Subrahmanya idol was replaced with a new one, led by Ambazhatara Shankarapillai, with Paravoor Bhattathiri conducting the associated rituals.
About forty years ago, an idol of the goddess was installed as a western darshan following the cleaning of the pond located in front of the temple. Additionally, Ganesha is enshrined as a sub-deity. The Taipuyam festival in the month of Makaram is particularly significant at this temple. Annually, various rituals such as Masashashthi Puja, Skandashashthi Puja, Karthika Lamp Puja, and Saptahayajna are conducted in relation to the festival. Panchamritam serves as the primary offering, and this temple is referenced in Unni Neeli Sandesham. Inscriptions can be found within the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. A temple advisory committee is actively involved in organizing festival celebrations and other related activities. The Vishawarserikkara Subramaniaswamy Temple, which is a subsidiary of the Thrikkutty Mahadeva Temple, is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board.
വിഷവർശ്ശേരിക്കര സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം
ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിൽ മാന്നാർ കുറ്റിയിൽ ജംഗ്ഷനിൽ നിന്നും ചെന്നിത്തല തൃപ്പെരുന്തുറ റോഡിൽ ഒരു കിലോമീറ്റർ സഞ്ചരിച്ചാൽ, റോഡിന്റെ തെക്ക് വശത്ത് കിഴക്കായി അതിപുരാതനമായ വിഷവർശ്ശേരിക്കര സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. കേരളത്തിലെ അപൂർവ്വമായ കുമാര പ്രതിഷ്ഠയോടുകൂടിയ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ഇത്. പരമശിവൻ ഈ പ്രദേശത്ത് കാളയായി കിടന്നിരുന്നുവെന്നും, അതിനാൽ പില്ക്കാലത്ത് ഈ സ്ഥലം ഋഷഭവാർശ്ശേരിക്കര എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നുവെന്നും പിന്നീട് വിഷവർശ്ശേരിക്കരയായി മാറിയെന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.
ദേവിയെ കോപം അടക്കാൻ പരമശിവൻ പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് പിടിച്ച് ഇരുത്തിയതും, സഹോദര ഭാവത്തിൽ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യനെ കിഴക്കോട്ടും ഇരുത്തിയതായാണ് പ്രതിഷ്ഠാ വിശ്വാസം. ഊരുമഠം ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രം ഈ സ്ഥലത്തുനിന്ന് അല്പം കിഴക്ക് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ഏകദേശം എൺപതോളം വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു മുൻപ്, അമ്പഴത്തറ ശങ്കരപ്പിള്ളയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ, അംഗഭംഗം വന്ന സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ വിഗ്രഹം മാറ്റി പുതിയ വിഗ്രഹം പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
പുനഃപ്രതിഷ്ഠാ കർമ്മം പറവൂർ ഭട്ടതിരി നിർവ്വഹിച്ചു. ഏകദേശം നാൽപതു വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു മുമ്പ്, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് മുന്നിലുള്ള കുളം വൃത്തിയാക്കിയപ്പോൾ ലഭിച്ച ദേവി വിഗ്രഹം പടിഞ്ഞാറ് ദർശനമായി പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ഗണപതി ഉപദേവതയും ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. മകരത്തിലെ തൈപ്പൂയം ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രത്യേക ആഘോഷമാണ്. മാസഷഷ്ഠിപൂജ, സ്കന്ദഷഷ്ടി പൂജ, കാർത്തിക വിളക്ക്പൂജ എന്നിവയും എല്ലാ വർഷവും ഉത്സവത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് സപ്താഹയജ്ഞം നടത്തിവരുന്നു. പഞ്ചാമൃതം പ്രധാന വഴിപാടാണ്, ഉണ്ണിനീലി സന്ദേശത്തിൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ശ്രീകോവിൽത്തറയിൽ ചിലവട്ടെഴുത്ത് ലിഖിതങ്ങൾ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു, ഉത്സവാഘോഷങ്ങൾക്കും മറ്റ് കാര്യങ്ങൾക്കുമായി.
