Althara Bhagavathy Temple, located about 1.2 km from Mattancherry in Kochi, is an ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Durga in her fierce form as Mahishasura Mardini.
Estimated to be over 400 years old, the temple is owned by Sree Janardhan Devasthan Kochi and falls under the Cochin Tirumala Devaswom Board.
Situated in Amravati near Fort Kochi, the temple is historically linked to the Konkani Vaishya-Vaniya community. During the 16th century, when the Portuguese invaded Goa and enforced forced conversions, Konkani communities sought refuge in Kochi.
The King of Cochin granted them land in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, leading to the establishment of various social and religious institutions, including the Althara Bhagavathy Temple, also known as the Keezhedam Temple. According to legend, a sailor caught in a violent storm vowed to build a temple if he safely reached the shore. It is believed that the goddess saved him, leading to the construction of this temple in her honor. This temple is unique as the presiding deity, Mahishasura Mardini, is a rare form of Durga worshipped in Kerala temples.
The temple hosts special poojas and grand celebrations during Navratri. The most important festival of the year is the 8-day annual festival held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February-March). A major highlight is the traditional Annakali procession on the sixth and seventh days, where devotees carry giant peacock statues along with the images of Goddess Durga (Kali), Bhima, and Darikan in a vibrant display of devotion and cultural heritage.
ആൽത്തറ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം
മട്ടാഞ്ചേരിയിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 1.5 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പുരാതനമായ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം കൊങ്കണി സംസാരിക്കുന്ന വൈശ്യ-വാണിയ സമുദായത്തിൻറെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലുള്ളതാണ്. ഇവിടെ മഹിഷാസുരമർദ്ദിനിയായ ദുർഗാദേവിയെയാണ് പ്രധാനദേവതയായി ആരാധിക്കുന്നത്. ശ്രീ ജനാർദ്ദന ദേവസ്ഥാൻ കൊച്ചിയുടെ കീഴിലുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ഏകദേശം 400 വർഷത്തെ ചരിത്രമുണ്ടെന്നാണ് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്.
ഫോർട്ടുകൊച്ചിക്ക് സമീപമുള്ള അമരാവതിയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ആൽത്തറ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം കൊങ്കണി വൈശ്യ-വാണിയ സമുദായത്തിൻറെ പ്രധാന ആരാധനാലയങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ്. 16-ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ, പോർച്ചുഗീസുകാർ ഗോവ കീഴടക്കി നിർബന്ധിത മതപരിവർത്തനം അടക്കമുള്ള കടുത്ത നടപടികൾ നടപ്പിലാക്കിയപ്പോൾ, കൊങ്കണി സമുദായങ്ങൾ പലസംഘങ്ങളായിക്കൊച്ചി ഭാഗങ്ങളിലേക്കു അഭയം തേടി.
കൊച്ചിരാജാവ് അവരെ സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്യുകയും ഫോർട്ടുകൊച്ചി, മട്ടാഞ്ചേരി പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ താമസത്തിനായി ഭൂമി നൽകുകയും ചെയ്തു.
സാമൂഹ്യ-മതപരമായ സ്ഥാപനമായ കൊച്ചി തിരുമല ദേവസ്വത്തിൻറെ കീഴിലുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം "കീഴേടം ക്ഷേത്രം" എന്ന പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇത് 400 വർഷത്തിലധികം പഴക്കമുള്ളതാണെന്നു കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. മഹിഷാസുരനെ സംഹരിച്ച ദുർഗാദേവിയുടെ അപൂർവ്വരൂപം ഇവിടെ ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു, ഇത് കേരളത്തിലെ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ അപൂർവ്വമാണ്.
