Ameda Temple is an ancient and revered Hindu temple located on the banks of Vembanad Lake, about 7.5 km south of Nadakkavu in Tripunithura, Ernakulam district.
The main sanctum sanctorum enshrines the Saptamatrukkal—Brahmani, Vaishnavi, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Varahi, Indrani, and Chamundi—who are considered different forms of Adi Parasakti. Within the temple complex, Nagaraja is worshipped in the west, Nagayakshi in the east, and Lord Vishnu, the local deity of the Vettam dynasty in the northern Zamorin lineage, in the north.
Ameda Temple spans over ten acres, including a house and land, and was originally established solely for serpent worship. It is densely packed with hundreds of Naga idols and holds deep spiritual significance for devotees. According to legend, while traveling through Kerala, Lord Parashurama reached the present-day Ameda and witnessed a divine radiance emerging from the lake. Using his divine vision, he saw that the radiance originated from the Saptamatrukkal, who were traveling outside turtles. As the water receded, the turtles stopped, and the place where they halted came to be known as Ameda.
The rituals and worship performed here have been passed down through generations. It is believed that a lamp lit by Parashurama still burns in the temple, and the oil from this lamp is distributed to devotees as a remedy for various ailments. The temple celebrates its annual festival in the Malayalam month of Meenam, with the Kodiyettu (flag hoisting) on the Makayiram star and the Arattu on the Uthram star. Ayilyam star, traditionally significant for serpent worship, holds special importance in the months of Kanni, Thulam, Vrischikam, and Meenam.
Every Karthika day, Dwadashakshari Pooja and Panthirairam Puspanjali are conducted at the main shrine. Vaishnavism rituals include the Dagavati Seva performed for twelve days in the month of Karkidakam, while Chamundi’s worship is emphasized throughout the Mandala period, culminating in a grand Guruthi offering on the forty-first day.

ആമേട ക്ഷേത്രം, നടക്കാവ്
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ തൃപ്പൂണിത്തുറയിൽ നിന്ന് 7.5 കിലോമീറ്റർ തെക്കായി, നടക്കാവ് എന്ന സ്ഥലത്തുനിന്ന് ഏകദേശം ഒരു കിലോമീറ്റർ പടിഞ്ഞാറ് വേമ്പനാട്ടു കായലിന്റെ തീരത്താണ് ആമേട ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ സപ്തമാതൃക്കളാണ് പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ മതിൽക്കുള്ളിൽ പടിഞ്ഞാറ് നാഗരാജാവിനെയും, കിഴക്ക് നാഗയക്ഷിയെയും, വടക്ക് സാമൂതിരി രാജവംശത്തിലെ വെട്ടത്ത് നാട്ടിലെ പരദേവതയായ മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിനെയും ഉപദേവതകളായി പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളായി സർപ്പാരാധനയ്ക്കായി മാത്രം പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം അഗാധ വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെയും അനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങളുടെ ശ്രദ്ധേയ കേന്ദ്രവുമാണ്.
ഐതിഹ്യമനുസരിച്ച്, പരശുരാമൻ കേരളകവലയുടെ തീരദേശഭാഗങ്ങൾ സന്ദർശിക്കുമ്പോൾ വേമ്പനാട്ടുകായലിന്റെ തീരത്ത് ഒരു ദിവ്യതേജസ് കണ്ടു. അതിനെ അന്വേഷിച്ച പരശുരാമൻ കായലിലേക്ക് ഇറങ്ങി നടന്നു. ആ ദിവ്യതേജസ്സിന്റെ ഉറവിടം ആമകളുടെ പുറത്ത് സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്ന സപ്തമാതൃക്കളാണെന്ന് ദിവ്യദൃഷ്ടിയാൽ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു. പരശുരാമനുവേണ്ടി ജലം പിരിഞ്ഞതോടെ ആമകൾ മുന്നോട്ട് പോകാതായി, അവ നിന്നിടം പിന്നീട് "ആമേട" എന്നായി അറിയപ്പെട്ടു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ തലമുറകളായി മന്ത്രോച്ഛാരത്തോടൊപ്പം പൂജാവിധികൾ ക്രമപെടുത്തി ആരാധന നടന്നു പോരുന്നു. പരശുരാമനാൽ കൊളുത്തപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ദീപം ഇന്നും അണയാതെ നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു എന്ന വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്.
ഈ ദീപത്തിലെ എണ്ണ ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾക്ക് സർവ്വരോഗങ്ങൾക്കും പ്രതിവിധിയായി പ്രസാദമായി നൽകപ്പെടുന്നു.
ബ്രഹ്മാണി, വൈഷ്ണവി, മഹേശ്വരി, കൌമാരി, വരാഹി, ഇന്ദ്രാണി, ചാമുണ്ഡി എന്നിവയാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ സപ്തമാതൃക്കൾ, അഥവാ ആദിപരാശക്തിയുടെ വിവിധ ഭാവങ്ങൾ. സപ്തമാതൃക്കളോടൊപ്പം വീരഭദ്രനും ഗണപതിയും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയിലുണ്ട്. മീനം മാസത്തിലെ മകയിരം നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ കൊടിയേറ്റ് ആരംഭിച്ച് പൂരം വലിയവിളക്കോടുകൂടി ഉത്രം നാളിൽ ആറാട്ടോടെ ഉത്സവം സമാപിക്കുന്നു.
ആയില്യം നക്ഷത്രം സാധാരണ സർപ്പാരാധനയ്ക്ക് പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ളതായിരുന്നാലും, കന്നി, തുലാം, വൃശ്ചികം, മീനം മാസങ്ങളിലെ ആയില്യത്തിനാണ് പ്രത്യേക പ്രാധാന്യം. പത്താമുദയം, നാഗപഞ്ചമി എന്നിവയും പ്രധാന ആഘോഷങ്ങളായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. എല്ലാ കാർത്തിക നാളിലും ദ്വാദശാക്ഷരീ പൂജയും പന്തീരായിരം പുഷ്പാഞ്ജലിയും പ്രധാന ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ നടത്തുന്നു. വൈഷ്ണവി പ്രധാനമായി കർക്കടക മാസത്തിൽ പന്ത്രണ്ട് ദിവസത്തെ ദഗവതിസേവയും, ചാമുണ്ഡി പ്രധാനമായി മണ്ഡലമാസം മുഴുവൻ ഗുരുതിയും, നാല്പത്തിയൊന്നാം ദിവസം പന്ത്രണ്ട് പാത്രങ്ങളിൽ വലിയ ഗുരുതിയും നടത്തുന്നു. നാഗദേവതകളുടെ അത്യുഗ്രസാന്നിധ്യം നിലനിൽക്കുന്ന മഹാക്ഷേത്രമായി ആമേട ശ്രീ സപ്തമാതൃക്കാ ക്ഷേത്രം വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
