Sree Gaureeswara Temple, located in Cherai, Ernakulam, is one of the most significant temples in the region.
Also known as "Malayala Palani," this temple is managed by the Vijnana Vardhini Sabha (VV Sabha). The presiding deity of the temple is Sri Subramanian, and the idol was installed by Sree Narayana Gurudeva in 1912. The temple also houses deities of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganapati, Lord Ayyappan, and the Navagrahas.
Annual festival of Cherai Gaureeswara Temple is one of the grandest temple festivals in Ernakulam district. It is especially famous for its elephant race, one of the largest in the district, attracting thousands of devotees and even foreign visitors. The festival is organized in collaboration with the local community and features colorful canopies, fairs, grand fireworks displays, and cultural events.
A highlight of the festival is the elephant competition held on the morning of the festival day. The leading elephants from Kerala participate in this event, and the winning elephant earns the honor of carrying the Lord's Thidambu (sacred idol) during the procession. Thousands of devotees gather to witness this spectacular event.
Arattu festival takes place on the tenth day of Kodiyettam (flag hoisting ceremony). During the festival, over 30 elephants participate in the grand procession, accompanied by the resounding beats of Panchavadyam, Kudamattam (decorative umbrella display), and mesmerizing fireworks.
ശ്രീ ഗൗരീശ്വര ക്ഷേത്രം ചെറായി
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ വടക്കൻ പറവൂരിൽ നിന്ന് 4.7 കിലോമീറ്റർ പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് സഞ്ചരിച്ചാൽ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ചെറായി പട്ടണത്തിലെ ശ്രീ ഗൗരീശ്വര ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരാം. ആധുനിക കേരളത്തിൻറെ സാമൂഹിക-സാംസ്കാരിക ചരിത്രത്തിലെ രണ്ടു മഹാന്മാരുടെ ജന്മദേശം എന്ന പ്രത്യേകതയും ചെറായിക്ക് ഉണ്ട്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം മലയാള പളനി എന്ന പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. വിജ്ഞാനവർദ്ധിനി സഭ (വി.വി.സഭ) ആണ് ക്ഷേത്രം നടത്തിപ്പ് നോക്കുന്നത്. ശ്രീനാരായണ ഗുരുദേവൻ സ്വന്തം കൈയ്യാൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ചെയ്ത മഹാക്ഷേത്രമാണിത്.
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിൽ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് ഇവിടെ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നത്. ജില്ലയിൽ തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ ആനകളെ എഴുന്നള്ളിച്ച് കൊണ്ടാടുന്ന ഉത്സവമായതിനാൽ വിദേശികളെയും ഈ മഹോത്സവം ആകർഷിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഇരു ചേരുവാരങ്ങളായി തിരിഞ്ഞ് പൊതു ജനങ്ങളുടെ സഹകരണത്തോടെ വലിയ മത്സര ആവേശത്തോടെയാണ് ഉത്സവം നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നത്. വാശിയേറിയ വർണശബളമായ കുടമാറ്റവും, വാദ്യമേളങ്ങളും, വെടിക്കെട്ടും ഇവിടുത്തെ ഉത്സവത്തിൻറെ പ്രധാന സവിശേഷതകളാണ്.
ഉത്സവ ദിനത്തിൽ രാവിലെ നടക്കുന്ന ആനകളുടെ തലപ്പൊക്ക മത്സരം ഏറെ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. ഈ മത്സരത്തിനായി ഇരുചേരുവാരങ്ങളും കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും തലയെടുപ്പുള്ള കരിവീരന്മാരെ അണിനിരത്തും. മത്സരത്തിൽ ജയിക്കുന്ന ആനയ്ക്കാണ് ഭഗവാന്റെ തിടമ്പ് വഹിക്കാനുള്ള അർഹത ലഭിക്കുക. ഇതു കാണാൻ ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ ഉത്സവപ്പറമ്പിലേക്കെത്തുന്നു. കൊടി കയറ്റിയിട്ട് പത്താം നാളാണ് ആറാട്ട് മഹോത്സവം.
ശ്രീ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ആണ് മുഖ്യ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയായെങ്കിലും ശിവൻ, പാർവതി, ഗണപതി, അയ്യപ്പൻ, നവഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയുടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠകളും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ അർപ്പിതമാണ്.
