Cheranalloor Mahadeva Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located on the banks of the Periyar River in Kalady, Ernakulam district, Kerala, India.
It is one of the significant temples of the Cochin Kingdom and is believed to be among the 108 Shiva temples consecrated by Sage Parashurama during the Treta Yuga. The main sanctum sanctorum houses Shiva facing east, and the shrine is built in a circular shape, showcasing the exquisite Kerala-Dravidian architectural style.
The temple features a beautifully constructed square-shaped namaskara mandapam in the eastern porch, an expansive nalambalam, and a well-maintained thidappalli. The craftsmanship displayed in the temple's construction is remarkable, making it a unique architectural marvel. Historically, the Cheranalloor Mahadeva Temple owned vast land holdings and received approximately 24 tons of paddy annually. However, following agrarian reforms, the temple lost most of its land, retaining only a few acres where the temple currently stands.
The temple follows a strict worship routine, conducting five daily poojas: Usha Pooja, Ethrtha Pooja, Pantheerati Pooja, Noon Pooja, and Athazha Pooja. The annual festival is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Kumbha (February–March). It is believed that Shiva here resides with Devi Sati, and thus, the deity is worshipped as Rina Mochaka, signifying the remover of debts and obstacles. The special Rina Mochaka Pooja is performed daily at the temple to help devotees overcome financial and karmic burdens.
ചേരാനല്ലൂർ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിൽ അങ്കമാലിയ്ക്കടുത്ത് കിഴക്കേ ചേരാനല്ലൂർ ദേശത്താണ് ഈ മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. 108 ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായ ചേരാനെല്ലൂർ മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം കേരള ശൈലിയിലുള്ള മനോഹരമായ തീർത്ഥാടന കേന്ദ്രമാണ്. നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളുടെ പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ശിവപ്രതിഷ്ഠ സ്ഥാപിച്ചത് പരശുരാമനാണെന്നു വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പെരിയാറ്റിൻ കരയിൽ തന്നെയായി എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിൽ മറ്റൊരു ചേരാനല്ലൂർ ശിവക്ഷേത്രം കൂടി സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു.
കിഴക്കേ ചേരാനല്ലൂരിലും കൊച്ചിയ്ക്കടുത്തുള്ള പടിഞ്ഞാറേ ചേരാനല്ലൂരിലുമാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ നിലകൊള്ളുന്നത്. പുരാതന കാലത്ത് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റേതായി 2400 പറ നിലം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതായി രേഖകൾ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു, എന്നാൽ കാലക്രമേണ ഈ ഭൂമികൾ പലരിലേക്കും കൈമാറപ്പെട്ടു. ശിവപ്രതിഷ്ഠ കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനം നൽകുന്ന രീതിയിലാണ് ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. വൃത്താകൃതിയിൽ പണിതീർത്ത ശ്രീകോവിൽ അതിമനോഹരമാണ്.
കിഴക്കൻ സോപാനത്തിൽ ചതുരാകൃതിയിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ച നമസ്കാരമണ്ഡപം, വലിയ നാലമ്പലം, അതിനോട് ചേർന്നുള്ള തിടപ്പള്ളി എന്നിവയുടെ ശില്പഭംഗിയും മഹത്വവും അക്ഷരാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ഒരു മഹാക്ഷേത്ര പ്രൗഡിനോട് ഒത്തിരിക്കുന്നു. ബലിക്കൽപ്പുരയുടെ കിഴക്കുഭാഗത്ത് ഇടത്തരം വലിപ്പമുള്ള ആനക്കൊട്ടിലും ഇവിടെ നിർമ്മിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
വാസ്തു വിദ്യയുടെ ആഴത്തിലുള്ള അറിവും ശില്പകലയുടെ അപൂർവമായ ശൈലികളും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷമാണ്. നിത്യേന ഉഷപൂജ, എതൃത്വപൂജ, പന്തീരടി പൂജ, ഉച്ചപൂജ, അത്താഴപൂജ എന്നിവയാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ അഞ്ചു പൂജാക്രമങ്ങൾ. കുംഭ മാസത്തിൽ പത്തു ദിവസങ്ങളിലായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന തിരുവുത്സവം ഭക്തിസാന്ദ്രമായ ആചാരാനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങളോടെയാണ് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നത്. മഹാശിവരാത്രി, വിനായക ചതുർത്ഥി, തിരുവാതിര എന്നിവ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വിശേഷ ദിവസങ്ങളാണ്.
