Chirakkal Mahadeva Temple, located in Kerala, India, is revered as the 108th Shiva temple in the country. The main deity is Lord Shiva, enshrined in Rowdra Bhavam (fierce form).
The temple features a small, two-storied sanctum sanctorum with a rectangular structure. Unlike many traditional temples, it lacks a flag, tower, or decorative entrance gate. While the Balikkallu (sacrificial stone) is large, there is no shelter covering it. The temple includes a prayer hall, with the Valiyambalam (main hall) positioned on the eastern side.
The surrounding enclosure appears newly constructed rather than ancient.
To the east of the temple, a wide walkway leads to a large gorge. The Shiva Lingam, standing about one and a half feet high, faces east. The concept behind the deity’s positioning suggests that the fierce form of the destroyer god remains calm as he faces the water. The temple follows a simple ritualistic structure with two daily poojas and temple ceremonies, but no annual festivals.
However, Maha Shivaratri is celebrated with public participation.
Interestingly, the temple does not have a Devi (Goddess) deity. Nandi, Lord Shiva’s sacred bull, is positioned near the prayer hall. In a small sanctum sanctorum on the southern side, Lord Sastha and Bhagavathy share the same pedestal, while Lord Ganapati is enshrined in the southwest corner. The temple is currently managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board.
ചിറയ്ക്കൽ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ അങ്കമാലിയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രസിദ്ധവും പുരാതനവുമായ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ചിറയ്ക്കൽ മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം. കേരളത്തിലെ നൂറ്റിയെട്ട് ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ അവസാനത്തേതും പ്രാമുഖ്യമുള്ളതുമായ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം, വൈഷ്ണവാശഭാവമുള്ള ശ്രീപരശുരാമൻ തന്നെയാണ് പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ചെയ്തത് എന്നാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം. പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ശ്രീപരമശിവനാണ്, കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനം നൽകുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഗർഭഗൃഹം ചതുരാകൃതിയുള്ള രണ്ടു നിലയുള്ള ചെറിയ ശ്രീകോവിലാണിത്.
ധ്വജസ്തംഭമോ ഗോപുരമോ അലങ്കാര കവാടമോ ഇല്ല, എന്നാൽ വലിയ ബലിക്കല്ലുള്ളതുമാത്രമാണ്, പക്ഷേ ബലിക്കൽപ്പുര ഇല്ല. നമസ്കാരമണ്ഡപം ഉണ്ട്, അതിന്റെ സമീപത്താണ് വലിയമ്പലം കിഴക്ക് ഭാഗത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. ചുറ്റമ്പലം പഴയതായില്ല, പുതുതായി നിർമ്മിച്ചതാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ കിഴക്കുഭാഗത്ത് വലിയ നടവഴി തുടങ്ങുകയും വലിയ ഒരു ചിറവരെ എത്തിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ശിവലിംഗം ഏകദേശം ഒന്നരയടി ഉയരമുള്ളതും കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനം നൽകുന്നതുമാണ്. ദേവൻ രൗദ്രഭാവത്തിൽ ജലത്തിലേക്ക് അഭിമുഖമായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നതിനാൽ ക്രുദ്ധനായ ശിവൻ ശാന്തനായി നിൽക്കുന്നു എന്നതാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ സങ്കല്പം.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ രണ്ടുനേരം പൂജയും മറ്റ് പ്രതിദിന ചടങ്ങുകളും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു, എന്നാൽ ഉത്സവങ്ങൾ ഒന്നുമില്ല. ശിവരാത്രി മാത്രം ജനപങ്കാളിത്തത്തോടെ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ദേവീപ്രതിഷ്ഠയില്ല. നമസ്കാരമണ്ഡപത്തിനു സമീപം നന്ദി പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ തെക്കുഭാഗത്തുള്ള കൊച്ചു ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ ശാസ്താവും ഭഗവതിയും ഒരേ പീഠത്തിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിതരായിരിക്കുന്നു, അതേസമയം ഗണപതി പ്രതിഷ്ഠ തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറ് ഭാഗത്ത് കാണാം. തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡിന്റെ കീഴിലാണ് ക്ഷേത്രഭരണം.
