Chowara Chidambaraswamy Temple, located in Chowara, Ernakulam district, is a revered Shiva temple believed to be one of the 108 Shiva temples of Kerala, installed by Sage Parasurama.
The presiding deity in the northern shrine is Lord Shiva in the form of Nataraja, enshrined in the sanctum sanctorum facing east. Interestingly, the temple itself is a small structure built facing west.
The temple and its surrounding village are mentioned multiple times in Puranas and local legends.
It is believed to be the abode of Chathan, associated with the Panthirukulam lineage, and is linked to the Thiruvairanikkulam temple and palace, as described in the legend of Shankunni. The place is also referred to as Sreemula Nagar, as Maharaja Thirunal Rama Varma is said to have passed away here.
Nataraja Murthy is worshipped in the form of a Shiva Linga, and due to its association with Lord Chidambaram, the temple is also known as Chidambareswaram. The main festival celebrated here is Maha Shivratri, observed with great devotion in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February-March). Additionally, the temple festival is held annually in the month of Makaram.
ചൊവ്വര ചിദംബരേശ്വര ക്ഷേത്രം
കേരളത്തിലെ എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ അങ്കമാലിക്കും ആലുവയ്ക്കും ഇടയിൽ, പെരിയാറിന്റെ തീരത്തുള്ള ചൊവ്വര ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രധാന ശിവക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ചൊവ്വര ചിദംബരേശ്വരസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം. തമിഴ്‌നാട്ടിലെ പ്രശസ്തമായ ചിദംബരം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ നടരാജമൂർത്തിയേ തന്നെ ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചതാണെന്നു വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈ ആചാരപരമ്പരയുടെ പേരിൽ ചിദംബരേശ്വരക്ഷേത്രം എന്ന പേരും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ശിവലിംഗം ചിദംബരത്തുനിന്ന് കൊണ്ടുവന്നതും പിന്നീട് പരശുരാമൻ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചതുമാണെന്നു ഐതിഹ്യം പറയുന്നു. ഇത് കേരളത്തിലെ 108 ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. ചിദംബരത്തിലെ നടരാജമൂർത്തിയെ ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചതാണെന്നു വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നുവെങ്കിലും, പതിവുപോലെ ശിവലിംഗരൂപത്തിലാണ് പ്രതിഷ്ഠ.
ഈ ഗ്രാമം, കേരളത്തിന്റെ പഴമയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട പറഞ്ഞുപോരുന്ന പന്തിരുകുലത്തിലെ ചാത്തന്റെ വിഹാരഭൂമിയായ അകവൂർ മനയും, ശങ്കുണ്ണിയുടെ ഐതിഹ്യമാലയിൽ വിവരിക്കുന്ന തിരുവൈരാണിക്കുളം ക്ഷേത്രവും ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്ന പ്രദേശവുമാണ്.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവം മകരമാസത്തിൽ ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു, അതേസമയം ശിവരാത്രിയാണ് ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ദിവസമായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്.
ഗണപതി മാത്രമാണ് ഇവിടെ ഉള്ള ഏക ഉപദേവത. ക്ഷേത്രഭരണം കൊച്ചി ദേവസ്വമാണ് നിർവഹിക്കുന്നത്. ചിദംബരേശ്വരനെ ചൊവ്വരത്ത് പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് ദർശനമായി പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു, നടരാജനാണ് ഇവിടെ ശിവസങ്കല്പം. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ തെക്കുവശത്തുകൂടെ പെരിയാർ ഒഴുകുന്നു, അതിനാൽ ദേവന്റെ ശക്തിയും ശാന്തതയും ഒരുമിച്ചു അനുഭവപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ആചാരപരമ്പര ഇവിടെ നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു.
