Manickamangalam Karthyayani Devi Temple is located about 1 km from Kalady in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. This sacred temple, dedicated to Goddess Karthyayani (Durga), is revered by millions of devotees from Kerala and across India.
Manickamangalam Temple enshrines a self-manifested idol of Parasakthi in the form of Lord Krishna’s sister and is one of the 108 renowned Durga Devi temples in Kerala.
Originally owned by the Panayil Pazhur Mana, an ancient Namboothiri family of Manikamangalam, the temple is now managed by N.S.S Karayogam No. 1096.
The temple's thanthrik rights belong to the Puliyannoor Thanthri family, with Brahmasree Puliyannoor Anujan Namboothirippadu as the present Thanthri. The temple also houses sub-deities, including Lord Dharmasastha, Goddess Elanjikkal Bhagavathy, Goddess Bhadrakali, and Nagaraja.
Karthyayani Devi Temple hosts two major annual festivals: the nine-day-long Manikamangalam Pooram in the month of Meenam and Karthika Lakshadeepam, celebrated on Devi’s birthday (Karthika Nakshatra) in the month of Vrishchikam, when one lakh lamps are lit in devotion.
According to legend, Sivaguru, the father of Adi Shankaracharya, used to visit and worship the Goddess daily without fail. However, one day, he missed his visit. In his absence, Aryamba Devi, Shankara’s mother, sent the infant Shankara to the temple with milk as an offering. By the time he reached, the temple had already closed, and he was unable to complete his offering. Overcome with sorrow, the young Shankara sat in the temple courtyard and wept.
At that moment, a divine light emanated from the sanctum, and the milk pot he carried miraculously emptied as if the Goddess had accepted the offering. Though delighted by this, Shankara was disheartened as there was no milk left to take home as prasadam. Seeing his distress, Devi appeared before him and refilled the pot with milk. This sacred milk, believed to be "Jnanatheertham" (the nectar of wisdom), is said to have granted Shankara extraordinary intelligence, eventually leading him to become the Jagadguru. Even today, devotees honor this legend by offering Palpayasam, the temple’s main offering, seeking blessings and divine wisdom from Goddess Karthyayani.
മാണിക്കമംഗലം കാർത്ത്യായനി ക്ഷേത്രം
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ കാലടി പട്ടണത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം ഒരു കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൂരെയായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് മാണിക്കമംഗലം കാർത്യായനി ക്ഷേത്രം. ജഗന്മാതാവായ പരാശക്തിയുടെയും ജഗദ്പിതാവായ പരമേശ്വരനുടെയും അനുഗ്രഹം കൊണ്ട് പരിശുദ്ധമായ പുണ്യഭൂമിയാണ് മാണിക്കമംഗലം. ഈ മഹത്തായ ക്ഷേത്രം നൂറ്റിയെട്ട് ദുർഗാക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായി പ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്. ദേവി ഇവിടെ കൃഷ്ണന്റെ സഹോദരീഭാവത്തിൽ ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു, സ്വയംഭൂവായ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിമ.
മൂലധാരയിൽ പനയിൽ പാഴൂർ മനക്കാർക്കായിരുന്നു ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥാവകാശം. ഇപ്പോൾ എൻ.എസ്.എസ് കരയോഗമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പരിപാലനം നടത്തുന്നത്. ക്ഷേത്ര തന്ത്രാവകാശം പുലിയന്നൂർ തന്ത്രി കുടുംബത്തിൻറേതാണ്, ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ തന്ത്രിയാണ് ബ്രഹ്മശ്രീ പുലിയന്നൂർ അനുജൻ നമ്പൂതിരിപ്പാട്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉപദേവതകളായി ധർമ്മശാസ്താവ്, ഇലഞ്ഞിക്കൽ ഭഗവതി, നാഗരാജാവ്, ഭദ്രകാളി എന്നിവരെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവങ്ങളാണ് മീനമാസത്തിൽ നടക്കുന്ന ഒമ്പത് ദിവസത്തെ മാണിക്കമംഗലം പൂരം, വൃശ്ചികത്തിലെ കാർത്തിക നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ ലക്ഷദീപങ്ങളോടെ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന കാർത്തിക ലക്ഷദീപം. ശ്രീശങ്കരാചാര്യരുടെ പിതാവായ ശിവഗുരു പ്രതിദിനം ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ദർശനം നടത്തുകയും വഴിപാടുകൾ അർപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. ഒരുദിവസം അദ്ദേഹം എത്തുവാൻ കഴിയാത്ത സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ, ശങ്കരന്റെ മാതാവ് ആര്യാംബാദേവി കുഞ്ഞു ശങ്കരനെ പാൽപ്പാത്രവുമായി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് അയച്ചു.
ശങ്കരൻ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെത്തിയപ്പോൾ നട അടച്ചിരുന്നതിനാൽ സമർപ്പണം നടത്തുവാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. ഇത് കണ്ട് ശങ്കരൻ ക്ഷേത്ര മുറ്റത്തു നിന്നു കരയാൻ തുടങ്ങി.
അന്നേരം ശ്രീകോവിലിനകത്തു നിന്നും ഒരു ദിവ്യപ്രകാശം തെളിഞ്ഞു, ശങ്കരന്റെ കൈയിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന പാൽപ്പാത്രം ശൂന്യമാകുകയും ദേവി തൻറെ പ്രസാദമായി പാൽ സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. പ്രസാദം അർപ്പിച്ച ദേവി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു, ശങ്കരന്റെ പാത്രം വീണ്ടും പാൽ നിറച്ച് അനുഗ്രഹം ചെയ്തു.
ദേവിയുടെ കൃപാദൃഷ്ടിയാൽ ശങ്കരാചാര്യർ ജ്ഞാനത്തിന്റെ അമൃതധാര സാക്ഷാത്കരിക്കുകയും പിന്നീട് ജഗദ്ഗുരുപദവിയിലേക്ക് ഉയർന്നുവെന്നും വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്.
ഇന്നും ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ ദേവിയെ ഭജിച്ച് ദേവീ പ്രസാദമായ പാൽപ്പായസം അർപ്പിക്കുകയും സേവിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. അറിവിന്റെ അമൃതധാര ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങുവാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നവർ ദേവിയെ പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ച് അനുഗ്രഹീതരാകുന്നു.
