Cheranalloor Maraparambu Mahadeva Temple, located in the Cheranalloor area of Kanayannur Taluk, Ernakulam, is one of the 108 famous Shiva temples built in the Kerala style and is the only Vaidyanatha temple in Kerala.
There is another Shiva temple in Cheranalloor on the banks of the Periyar, and both temples share the same name, making it difficult to determine which one is mentioned in the 108 Shivalaya Stotram. However, the Maraparambu temple is believed to be the oldest in the region, with historical references suggesting that it was initially a Jain temple, later converted into a Shiva temple due to its unique granite floor architecture.
This centuries-old temple has Lord Shiva as the presiding deity, facing east, and is believed to be Swayambhoo (self-manifested), though it is also considered a Parasurama Prathishta. At one time, the temple owned 2,400 acres of land, which gradually passed on to various owners. The sanctum sanctorum is a two-storied, rectangular structure, and a prayer hall is situated on the east staircase. The Nalambalam, Thidappally, and Balikalpura showcase the grandeur of Kerala temple architecture.
Sub-deities include Lord Ganesha, Bhagavathi, Subramanian, and Rakshasas. The temple holds special significance for health and healing, with devotees performing the Ghritadhara offering on Thiruvathira in the month of Thulam. The temple celebrates Mahashivaratri, Vinayaka Chaturthi, Thaipuyam, Navaratri, and the annual festival in Kumbham, marking the Dedication Day celebrations. Three daily poojas are performed, maintaining the temple's rich spiritual traditions.
ചേരാനല്ലൂർ മാരാപറമ്പ് മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ കണയന്നൂർ താലൂക്കിൽ ചേരാനല്ലൂർ ദേശത്തുള്ള മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം, 108 ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന പ്രശസ്തവും കേരള ശൈലിയിൽ പണിതീർത്ത മഹാക്ഷേത്രവുമാണ്. കേരളത്തിലെ ഏക വൈദ്യനാഥ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ചേരാനല്ലൂർ മാരാപറമ്പ് മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം. എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിൽ പെരിയാറ്റിൻ കരയിൽ തന്നെ മറ്റൊരു ചേരാനല്ലൂർ ശിവക്ഷേത്രവും സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു, ഇതിനെ രണ്ടു ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളും ഒരേപേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
മാരാപറമ്പ് ക്ഷേത്രം ആദിയിൽ ജൈനക്ഷേത്രമായിരുന്നുവെന്നും പിന്നീട് ശിവക്ഷേത്രമായി മാറിയതാണെന്നും കരുതുന്നു. കരിങ്കൽത്തറയുടെ പ്രത്യേക ശില്പരീതി ഈ വിശ്വാസത്തിന് ശക്തിപകരുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രപരിസരം ശാന്തവും ഭക്തിസാന്ദ്രവുമായ അന്തരീക്ഷം നൽകുന്ന വിധത്തിലാണ് രൂപകല്പന ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. നാലമ്പലവും, തിടപ്പള്ളിയും, ബലിക്കൽപ്പുരയും മഹാക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രൗഡിയുണർത്തുന്ന രീതിയിൽ പണിതിരിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രവളപ്പിൽ ഗണപതിക്കും, ഭഗവതിക്കും, സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യനുമുള്ള ഉപക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളും മനോഹരമായി നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
ശംഖാഭിഷേകം പ്രധാന വഴിപാടായാണ് ഇവിടെ ആരാധന നടത്തുന്നത്. ഉപദേവന്മാരായ ഗണപതി, ഭഗവതി, സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ, രക്ഷസ്സ് എന്നിവരുടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠകളും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഉണ്ട്.
പ്രതിഷ്ഠാദിനത്തോട് അനുബന്ധിച്ച ഉത്സവം കുംഭമാസത്തിൽ ആചരിക്കുന്നു. കൂടാതെ ശിവരാത്രി, വിനായക ചതുർത്ഥി, തൈപൂയം, നവരാത്രി എന്നിവയും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഭക്തിസാന്ദ്രമായി ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. നിത്യേന മൂന്ന് പൂജകളാണ് ഇവിടെ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നത്.
