Dhanwanthari Temple is an ancient and revered temple located in Palluruthy, just 2.3 km from Thopumpady in Ernakulam district.
The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician and an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped as the god of Ayurveda. The temple is renowned for its unique mukkudi offering, which is believed to grant relief from ailments and suffering.
Lord Dhanvantari resides in Srikakulam, facing east, and Goddess Mahalakshmi is also enshrined within the temple premises.One of the most significant festivals celebrated at the temple is Vaikuntha Ekadashi in the month of Dhanu, which attracts devotees from far and wide. Lord Dhanvantari, an ancient master of medicine, divided the field into two essential branches—pharmacology and medical practice. He is regarded as the nurturer of Ayurveda, the science of life, which is based on doctrine, manifestation, conjecture, parable, and divine revelation.
Ayurveda, in turn, is classified into Ashtanga Ayurveda, comprising eight distinct branches. According to the Vedas and Puranas, Lord Dhanvantari is the supreme master of Ayurveda and is considered an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Hindu tradition describes him as the deity of life and health, worshipped by both patients and healers alike. This divine association forms the basis of the words medicine and mantra. As per the Bhagavatam, Dhanvantari emerged from the churning of the ocean (Palazhi Madhanam), holding the Amritakumbha—the pot of nectar that grants immortality to the gods.
Dhanvantari is usually depicted in the Chaturbahu (four-armed) form, holding sacred objects symbolizing health and healing. It is a longstanding tradition for Ayurvedic practitioners to invoke his blessings before beginning treatments, particularly in the month of Karkidakam. Hindus believe that by worshipping Lord Dhanvantari, one can attain good health, longevity, and protection from diseases.
പള്ളുരുത്തി ധന്വന്തരി ക്ഷേത്രം
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ തോപ്പുംപടിയിൽനിന്ന് 2.3 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെ പള്ളുരുത്തിയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പുരാതന ദേവീക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ധന്വന്തരി ക്ഷേത്രം. വിഷ്ണുവിൻറെ അവതാരമായും ആയുർവേദത്തിൻറെ ദേവനായും അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ധന്വന്തരി ഭഗവാൻ ആണ് പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. ഭക്തർ ഇവിടെ വന്ന് തൊഴുതാൽ ആയുരാരോഗ്യസൗഖ്യങ്ങൾ പ്രാപിക്കുമെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മുക്കുടി നിവേദ്യം ഏറെ പ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്. കിഴക്കോട്ടുള്ള ദർശനത്തോടെ ശ്രീലകത്ത് വാഴുന്ന ധന്വന്ത്രിഭഗവാനോടൊപ്പം മഹാലക്ഷ്മിയും ഉപദേവതയായി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവമാണ് ധനുമാസത്തിലെ വൈകുണ്ഠ ഏകാദശി, ഈ സമയത്ത് പ്രത്യേക പൂജകളും ആചാരങ്ങളും നടപ്പിലാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
വേദങ്ങളും പുരാണങ്ങളും ധന്വന്തരിയെ ആയുർവേദത്തിൻറെ നാഥനായി വാഴ്ത്തുന്നു. ഹൈന്ദവ വിശ്വാസപ്രകാരം ധന്വന്തരി ആയുസ്സിന്റെയും ആരോഗ്യത്തിൻറെയും ദേവതയാണ്, അതിനാൽ രോഗികളും ദേവലോകത്തിലെ വൈദ്യന്മാരും സമാനമായി ഭഗവാനെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നു. മരുന്നും മന്ത്രവും എന്ന ചൊല്ലിന്‍റെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാണ് ഈ വിശ്വാസം. ഭാഗവതം പ്രകാരം, പാലാഴിമഥനം എന്ന സാഗരമഥനത്തിനിടെ, ദേവന്മാർക്ക് അമരത്വം നൽകുന്ന അമൃതകുംഭവുമായി ധന്വന്തരി അവതരിച്ചു.
പൊതുവേ ചതുർബാഹു രൂപത്തിലാണ് ധന്വന്ത്രിയെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കുന്നത്. ആയുർവേദ ചികിത്സ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ്, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് കർക്കിടകമാസത്തിൽ, വൈദ്യർ ധന്വന്ത്രിയോട് പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുകയും അനുഗ്രഹം തേടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഹൈന്ദവവിശ്വാസം പ്രകാരം ധന്വന്ത്രിയെ ഭക്തിപൂർവം ആരാധിച്ചാൽ രോഗങ്ങൾ അകന്നു, ദീർഘായുസ്സും ആരോഗ്യവും ലഭിക്കും.
