Pazhayannur Bhagavathy Temple is the ancestral deity (Paradevata) of the Kochi royal family.
Located next to the Mattancherry Palace, which was built around 1555 as a gift to the King of Kochi by the Portuguese, this temple holds great historical and spiritual significance. Under royal patronage, the temple shares a wall with the Paradesi Jewish Synagogue, symbolizing the religious tolerance and inter-cultural harmony that flourished in the region.
Even today, members of the Kochi royal family frequently visit the temple to offer their prayers and seek blessings from Goddess Bhagavathy. On either side of the Mattancherry Palace, there are two additional temples—one dedicated to Lord Krishna and the other to Lord Shiva. The architectural style of the palace exhibits a blend of European influence with the traditional Nālukettu design, evident in the nature of its arches and the proportion of its chambers.
The palace also features rare examples of traditional Kerala flooring, which resembles polished black marble but is actually made from a unique mixture of burned coconut shells, charcoal, lime, plant juices, and egg whites, showcasing the region’s rich craftsmanship and architectural ingenuity.
മട്ടാഞ്ചേരി പഴയന്നൂർ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം
കൊച്ചി നഗരമധ്യത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഏകദേശം 12 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയാണ് മട്ടാഞ്ചേരി. കൊളോണിയൽ വാസ്തുശൈലിയിൽ തീർത്ത മട്ടാഞ്ചേരി കൊട്ടാരത്തിനോട് ചേർന്നാണ് മട്ടാഞ്ചേരി പഴയന്നൂർ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. കൊച്ചി രാജവംശത്തിൻറെ പരദേവതയും ഉപാസനമൂർത്തിയും കൂടിയാണ് പഴയന്നൂർ ഭഗവതി. 1545-ൽ പോർച്ചുഗീസുകാർ കൊച്ചി മഹാരാജാവായ വീരകേരളവർമ്മയ്ക്ക് സമ്മാനമായി നൽകാൻ ഈ കൊട്ടാരം നിർമ്മിച്ചതാണ്.
കൊച്ചി രാജകുടുംബത്തിൻറെ പരദേവതയായ പഴയന്നൂർ ഭഗവതിയെ കൊട്ടാരത്തിലെ പൂജാമുറിയിലാണ് പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനോട് ചേർന്നതായി ശിവൻറെയും ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണൻറെയും ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളും നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു.
കൊട്ടാരത്തിലെ വിശാലമായ മുറികൾ ചുവർചിത്രങ്ങളാൽ സമ്പന്നമാണ്. രാമായണം, മഹാഭാരതം എന്നീ ഇതിഹാസങ്ങളിലെ കഥാസന്ദർഭങ്ങളും ഗുരുവായൂർ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണ വിഗ്രഹവും കേരളീയ ചുവർചിത്ര ശൈലിയിൽ ആലേഖനം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു.
കാളിദാസൻറെ നാടകമായ കുമാരസംഭവത്തിലെ ദൃശ്യങ്ങളും ഇവിടെ കാണാം. ഏകദേശം 300 ചതുരശ്ര മീറ്ററോളം വിസ്തൃതിയുള്ള ഈ ചിത്രശാല കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രാചീന കലാചരിത്രത്തിൻറെ ദൃശ്യമുദ്രയായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു.
1864 മുതൽ കൊച്ചി രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ എണ്ണച്ചായ ചിത്രങ്ങൾ, വാളുകൾ, കൊത്തുപണി ചെയ്ത പിടികളോടുകൂടിയ കഠാരകൾ, കിരീടാരോഹണ ചടങ്ങുകൾക്കായി ഉപയോഗിച്ച അലംകൃതമായ കുന്തങ്ങൾ, വെഞ്ചാമരങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയും ഇവിടെ പ്രദർശിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
