Pulakotta Dharmasastha Temple is a prominent temple located in Perumbavoor, Ernakulam, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. The temple is a revered place of worship for devotees seeking the blessings of Dharmasastha.
Pulakotta Dharmasastha Temple in Perumbavoor, Ernakulam, has a unique and fascinating origin story. According to legend, when the aggressor Udayan invaded and conquered the Pandalam kingdom, Lord Dharmasastha took different forms and eventually arrived in Perumbavoor, appearing as an elder brother.
He became dependent on the ruling lords of the fort and gained permission to cultivate the wasteland that is now Perumbavoor.For this purpose, four groups of Pulayars were brought from Alangad, Angamaly, and Manjapra. A fort was built for them where they could learn weaponry alongside agriculture. The area soon flourished with farming. Disguised as an elder brother, Dharmasastha visited the Pulayar community at night and stayed with them in their settlement, which was located near a dense tiger sanctuary.
Using the Pulayar warriors, Dharmasastha orchestrated the downfall of Udayan and liberated Pandalam. Afterward, when he returned to Perumbavoor, he continued to visit the Pulayar settlements. Over time, he became known as Pulakotta Sastha. Pulayars built a fort near the Kolopara field, 300 meters east-north of the present-day Perumbavoor Dharmasastha Temple. This location gradually developed into the temple seen today. The construction of the temple was supported by Travancore Devaswom Board President Mankuzhi Madhavan and Member Makkapuzha Vasudevan.
A Pulaya named Pengan, who was once the guardian of the field, was also the temple worker and priest in its early days. Before that, Payyamattom Kurumban served as the temple’s abbot.
The locals, who once protected the farmlands by building a watchtower in front of the Palamaram tree, played a key role in maintaining the temple. Eventually, the temple was built by cutting down the Palamaram tree under which it stood. In 1967, Pengan was elected President of the Kerala State Harijan Samaj, following the formation of a temple committee led by Kunjol and Thottuva Narendran Master.

എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ പെരുമ്പാവൂർ പട്ടണത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 650 മീറ്റർ വടക്കു മാറി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പുരാതന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് പുലക്കോട്ട ധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം. ഐതിഹ്യപരമായി വളരെ പഴക്കം പുലർത്തുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം, ഒരുകാലത്ത് ആരുടെയും ശ്രദ്ധയിൽപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നില്ല. എന്നാൽ ഇന്ന്, പെരുമ്പാവൂർ ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ദർശനം നടത്തിയ ശേഷം മാത്രം അയ്യപ്പഭക്തർ മലചവിട്ടാൻ പോകുന്ന രീതി നിലവിലുണ്ട്.
ക്ഷേത്ര ഉത്ഭവ ഐതിഹ്യം ഇങ്ങനെയാണ് ഉദയൻ എന്ന അക്രമകാരി പന്തളം രാജ്യം കീഴടക്കി ഭരിച്ചപ്പോൾ, ധർമ്മശാസ്താവ് ഭിന്നരൂപങ്ങൾ സ്വീകരിച്ച് ജ്യേഷ്ഠാനുജന്മാരായി പെരുമ്പാവൂരിൽ എത്തുകയും നാടുവാഴിയായ കോട്ടയിൽ കർത്താക്കന്മാരുടെ ആശ്രിതരായി കുടിയേറുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇന്നത്തെ പെരുമ്പാവൂരായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന പ്രദേശം അന്നുകാലത്ത് പാഴ്‌ഭൂമിയായിരുന്നതിനാൽ, കൃഷിക്കായി അനുമതി ലഭിച്ച ശേഷം, ആലങ്ങാട്, അങ്കമാലി, മഞ്ഞപ്ര എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് നാലു കൂട്ടം പുലയരെ വരുത്തി കൃഷിപ്പണിയിലേർപ്പെടുത്തി.

പെരുമ്പാവൂരിൽ തിരിച്ചെത്തിയ ധർമ്മശാസ്താവ്, ജ്യേഷ്ഠാനുജന്മാരുടെ വേഷത്തിൽ പ്രദേശം സന്ദർശിക്കുകയും രാത്രികൾ കടുവകളുടെ ഭീഷണിയുണ്ടായിരുന്ന നിബിഡവനത്തിലെ പുലയർ പാളയത്തിൽ ചെല്ലി അവരോടൊപ്പം താമസിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
അതേസമയം, പുലയരിൽ നിന്ന് സഹായം ഉൾക്കൊണ്ടുള്ള ധർമ്മശാസ്താവ്, അക്രമി ഉദയനെ പരാജയപ്പെടുത്തുകയും പന്തളം രാജ്യം മോചിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. പന്തളത്തെ മോചിപ്പിച്ചശേഷം പെരുമ്പാവൂരിൽ മടങ്ങിയെത്തിയ ധർമ്മശാസ്താവ്, പുലയർ സമുദായത്തോടൊപ്പം ചേർന്ന് ഇവിടെയൊരു സാന്നിധ്യമായി മാറി. ഇങ്ങനെ, ജ്യേഷ്ഠനായി അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ശാസ്താവ് പിന്നീട് പുലക്കോട്ട ശാസ്താവായി പരിണമിച്ചു. പുലയർ സമുദായം കൊളോപ്പാറ പാടത്തിൻറെ കരയിൽ ഒരു കോട്ട കെട്ടി, അവിടെ ധർമ്മശാസ്താവിനെ സങ്കല്പിച്ച് ആരാധന നടത്താൻ തുടങ്ങി. ഇന്നും അതേ സ്ഥലത്താണ് പുലക്കോട്ട ധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം നിലകൊള്ളുന്നത്.
1967-ൽ കേരള സ്റ്റേറ്റ് ഹരിജൻ സമാജം പ്രസിഡൻറ് എം. കെ. കുഞ്ഞോലി, തോട്ടുവ നരേന്ദ്രൻ മാസ്റ്റർ എന്നിവരുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ രൂപീകരിച്ച കമ്മിറ്റിയാണ് ക്ഷേത്രം നവീകരിച്ചത്. അവിടത്തെ പാലമരത്തിൻറെ ചുവട്ടിൽ പൂലയർ ധർമ്മശാസ്താവിന് അർപ്പണമായിത്തന്നെ അന്തിത്തിരി വെച്ചുപൂജിച്ചു വരികയായിരുന്നു. അതിനെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കി, ആ പാലമരം മുറിച്ചുമാറ്റി ആ ക്ഷേത്രം പണിതു.
ക്ഷേത്ര നിർമ്മാണത്തിന് തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡ് പ്രസിഡൻറ് മാങ്കുഴി മാധവനും മെമ്പർ മക്കപ്പുഴ വാസുദേവനും സഹായം ചെയ്തു. കൊളോപ്പാറ പാടത്തിന് കാവൽക്കാരനായിരുന്ന പേങ്ങൻ എന്ന പുലയനായിരുന്നു അന്നത്തെ പൂജാരിയും മുഖ്യ സേവകനുമായിരുന്നു. അതിനുമുമ്പ്, മഠാധിപതിയായി പയ്യാമറ്റം കുറുമ്പൻ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിരുന്നു.
ഒരു കാലത്ത് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രദർശനം സവർണർക്കായി നിരോധിച്ചിരുന്നതായിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും, ഇന്ന് പുലക്കോട്ട ശാസ്താവിന്റെ ശക്തിയിലും മഹത്വത്തിലും ആകർഷിക്കപ്പെട്ട്, എല്ലാ ജാതി-മത ഭേദമന്യേ ഭക്തർ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പുരോഗതിക്ക് വേണ്ടിയുള്ള എല്ലാ സഹായങ്ങളും ഭക്തർ നിർവഹിച്ചുവരുന്നു.പുലയർക്കായി ക്ഷേത്രപ്രവേശനം നിരോധിച്ചിരുന്ന കാലത്ത്, അവർ കൂട്ടമായി കൂടിയതിനു ശേഷം ദൂരത്ത് നിന്നുകൊണ്ട് പുലക്കോട്ട ശാസ്താവിന്റെ ഭജനവും തിരുവായ്പാട്ടും നടത്തി. ഇന്നും ഈ സ്ഥലം ചരിത്രസ്മാരകമായി നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു.
