Punnackal Bhagavathy Temple is located in Elamakkara, Ernakulam district. Believed to be over 100 years old, the temple enshrines Bhagavathy in the form of Vanadurga.
The original Kannadi Bimbam (mirror idol) was consecrated under a Punna tree, exposed to the sun and rain, on the southern side of the present temple. Due to this, the Goddess was also referred to as Nana Durga. Later, the deity was enshrined within a sanctum made of coconut fronds.
The temple originally belonged to the Elangaloor Swaroopam of Edappally. In 1973, it was handed over to the local NSS Karayogam, which undertook its renovation and reconstruction.
Historically, the area was home to several Namboothiri Illams (households) and had a Sree Rama temple. However, during Tippu Sultan's invasion, this temple was destroyed. According to astrological findings, the remains of that temple are believed to be submerged in the pond of the Punnakkal Bhagavathy Temple. Consequently, a new Sree Rama temple was constructed within the temple premises. The main festival of the Punnakkal Bhagavathy Temple is the annual Ashwati Thalapoli, celebrated on the day of Ashwati in the Malayalam month of Kumbham.
Another significant event is the grand procession held on the last day of the Mandala season, where devotees carry the deity in a procession from this temple to the Perandoor Bhagavathy Temple—a spectacle of pride and devotion.
Other important observances at the temple include Mandalakalam, Ramayana Masam, and Navratri. To invoke blessings for accomplishment, prosperity, and wealth, Guruthi Pooja is performed every Tuesday and Friday after Deeparadhana in honor of the Goddess.
പുന്നക്കൽ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം
എറണാകുളം നോർത്ത് റെയിൽവേ സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 5 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയുള്ള ഇളമക്കര പുന്നക്കൽ കവലയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു പ്രസിദ്ധ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് പുന്നക്കൽ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം. നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളുടെ പഴക്കംകൊണ്ടു ചരിത്രപരമായി മഹത്വമുള്ള ഈ ദേവീക്ഷേത്രം നനദുർഗ്ഗാഭാവത്തിൽ ഭക്തർക്ക് അഭയമേകുന്ന ദൈവാലയമായും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
പണ്ടുകാലത്ത്, ഭഗവതിയെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ തെക്ക് വശത്തുള്ള ഒരു പുന്നമരത്തിൻ ചുവട്ടിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരുന്നതായാണ് വിശ്വാസം.
നനദുർഗ്ഗാ കാത്യായനി രൂപത്തിൽ ദേവി അവിടെ മഴയും വെളിച്ചവും നേരിട്ട് ഏറ്റുകൊണ്ട് ഭക്തജനങ്ങളെ കാക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. നനദുർഗ്ഗാക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളുടെ പ്രത്യേകത അനുസരിച്ച്, ഇവിടെ ശ്രീകോവിലിന് മേൽക്കൂരയില്ല. ഇതിന്‍റെ ഫലമായി, ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലും താഴികക്കുടം (ഗോപുരം) ഇല്ലാത്തത് തന്നെ ഒരു സവിശേഷതയായി മാറി. 1973-ൽ ഒരു നിയമാനുസൃതമായ ഉടമ്പടി പ്രകാരം, പേരണ്ടൂർ, പുന്നക്കൽ, പുതുക്കലവട്ടം എന്നീ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളുടെ ഭരണാധികാരം എളങ്ങൂർ സ്വരൂപത്തിലെ വലിയരാജ വാസുദേവൻ തിരുവിതാംകൂർ എൻ.എസ്.എസ് കരയോഗത്തിന് കൈമാറ്റം ചെയ്തു, ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം അന്യദേശക്കാരുൾപ്പെടെ പലർക്കും അവരുടെ കുലദേവതാ ക്ഷേത്രമായി അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവമായ അശ്വതി താലപ്പൊലി കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ അശ്വതി നാളിൽ വെടിപ്പായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. മണ്ഡലകാലം അവസാനിക്കുന്ന ദിനത്തിൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽനിന്ന് ഘോഷയാത്രയായി പേരണ്ടൂർ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്കുള്ള മഹാ പ്രദക്ഷിണം ഭക്തർക്ക് അത്യന്തം വിശിഷ്ടവും ആകർഷണീയവുമാണ്. കൂടാതെ, നവരാത്രി, രാമായണമാസം എന്നിവയും ഭക്തിപൂർവം ആചരിക്കുന്നു. ഭഗവതിയുടെ കൃപാലബ്ധിക്കും ഐശ്വര്യത്തിനും ഉദ്ധിഷ്ടകാര്യസിദ്ധിക്കും വേണ്ടി എല്ലാ ചൊവ്വാഴ്ചയും വെള്ളിയാഴ്ചയും ദീപാരാധനക്ക് ശേഷം ഗുരുതിപൂജ ഭക്തിശ്രദ്ധാപൂർവം നടത്തിവരുന്നു.
