Puthenkavu Sri Bhagavathy Temple is a renowned Devi temple situated in the village of Elavoor, near Angamaly in Ernakulam district, Kerala.
Dedicated to Goddess Sree Bhadrakali, this temple holds great spiritual significance and is one of the most important places of worship for Hindus in Kerala. The temple is particularly well-known for the Elavoor Thookam ritual, which has garnered widespread attention and discussion across the state.Elavoor was historically known for its ritual called 'Elavoor Thookkam,' which was officially stopped by the court in 2004.
This ritual, once performed as an offering to Goddess Bhadrakali, involved a participant being suspended by an iron hook pierced through the skin on their back and lifted up to 30 feet, circling the Kavu three times. The Kerala government banned 'Elavoor Thookkam' in 1987 following widespread protests against the practice of blood sacrifice.
The participant, known as the jumper, would observe a 41-day fast in preparation for the ritual. In the final 10 days, a special medicated oil was applied to the body to thicken the skin, making it more resistant to injury. After the ritual, the participant would remain in the temple for a week, treating the wound with turmeric powder and bandages, enduring the pain as part of the offering.
പുത്തൻകാവ് ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം എളവൂർ
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ അങ്കമാലിക്കടുത്തുള്ള എളവൂർ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് പുത്തൻക്കാവ് ശ്രീ ഭഗവതീ ക്ഷേത്രം. ശ്രീ പുത്തൻകാവിലമ്മയുടെ പ്രധാനമായ ഒരു വഴിപാടായിരുന്നു തൂക്കം, ഇത് കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ ഒരു ഗ്രാമം പിന്നീട് ലോകത്ത് അറിയപ്പെട്ടു. നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളായി തുടരപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഈ ആചാരം രൗദ്രഭാവത്തിലുള്ള ശ്രീ പുത്തൻകാവിലമ്മയുടെ ഇഷ്ട വഴിപാടായും വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. എളവൂർ തൂക്കം മറ്റു തൂക്കങ്ങളിലൊടുവിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായത് തൂക്കച്ചാടിലെ കൊളുത്ത് നേരിട്ട് ഭക്തന്റെ തൊലിയിൽ കുത്തി കെട്ടുന്നതിനാലാണ്. പുരാതനകാലത്ത് ഏഴു ദിവസങ്ങളിലായി തൂക്കം നടത്തപ്പെടുകയും ഏഴാം ദിവസം തൂക്കച്ചാടിൽ നിന്ന് ഭക്തനെ ഇറക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.
ദേവിയുടെ കടുത്ത ഭക്തയായ ഒരമ്മയുടെ പ്രാർത്ഥന മൂലം ഈ ആചാരത്തിൽ മാറ്റം വരുകയും അത് മൂന്നു പ്രദക്ഷിണമായി ചുരുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. തുടർന്ന്, തൂക്കച്ചാടിലേറിയ ഭക്തനെ ദേവിക്ക് മുന്നിൽ മൂന്നു പ്രദക്ഷിണം വയ്ക്കുക എന്ന രീതിയിൽ ഇത് പ്രചാരത്തിലായിരുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രരേഖകൾ പ്രകാരം, ഒന്നു മുതൽ ഏഴു തൂക്കം വരെ ഒരേ സമയം നടന്നു വന്നിരുന്നതായി പറയുന്നു. തൂങ്ങുന്ന ഭക്തൻ നാല്പത്തൊന്നു നാൾ വ്രതം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ച് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ താമസിക്കുകയും പ്രത്യേക തിരുമൽ ചികിത്സക്കു ശേഷമാണ് തൂക്കച്ചാടിലേറുന്നതെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. 32 അടി ഉയരമുള്ള തൂക്കച്ചാടും കൊളുത്തും ദേവസ്വം ഇന്നും സൂക്ഷിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
ദേവിയുടെ ഹിതം മാനിച്ച് നിർത്തലാക്കിയ ഈ ചടങ്ങ് ഇന്ന് ദേവിക്ക് പൂമൂടലായി പത്താമുദയനാളിൽ പുനർജനിച്ചു.
ചുവന്ന പട്ടും ചിലങ്കയും വാളുമേന്തി തിരുവാഭരണ ചാർത്തി സർവ്വാലങ്കാരഭൂഷിതയായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്ന പുത്തൻകാവിലമ്മയെ പത്താമുദയനാളിൽ ദർശിക്കുന്നതുതന്നെ ഒരു മനുഷ്യായുസ്സിന്റെ മഹാപുണ്യമാണെന്ന് ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ കരുതുന്നു. ദേവിയുടെ ഇഷ്ടവഴിപാട് കൂടിയായ പുഷ്പാഭിഷേകം വളരെ ദർശനപ്രധാനവും വിശിഷ്ടവുമായ പൂജയാണ്.
