Thirunayathode Siva Narayana Temple, located in the village of Nayathode in Ernakulam district, Kerala, is a unique and rare temple dedicated to both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.
Situated just 4 km from Kalady, this ancient temple is believed to be over 1200 years old. Historical records suggest that it was built by Cheraman Perumal Nayanar, who ruled the Chera empire from AD 800 to 844.
What makes this temple extraordinary is that both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are consecrated together on a single idol.
After performing Shiva Pooja, Vishnu Pooja is also conducted on the same idol. Additionally, both deities hoist their flags on the same flagpole, symbolizing the unity of Shaivism and Vaishnavism. The temple beautifully conveys the essence of Advaita philosophy through its dual worship. A fascinating legend surrounds the temple’s origin. The king’s guru, on his deathbed, revealed that due to a curse, he would be reborn as a dog. He instructed the king to find him and ensure he was raised without consuming forbidden food (human excreta), as doing so would lead to his immediate salvation.
The king faithfully searched for the reborn guru each year. However, on one such occasion, the dog came across the forbidden food, and to prevent it from eating, the king instantly beheaded it. Though the guru attained salvation, the king was burdened with the sin of killing his teacher (Guru Hathya Paapam).
To atone for his sin, the king decided to construct a Shiva temple at the site. However, the consecration ceremony faced delays.
Eventually, the renowned Tantri, Kovattu Adikal, stepped forward to perform the sacred ritual. Being a devotee of Lord Vishnu, he consecrated both Shiva and Vishnu on the same idol, ensuring the ultimate salvation of the guru. Thus, the Thirunayathode Siva Narayana Temple came into existence, standing as a powerful testament to divine unity and spiritual harmony.
തിരുനായത്തോട് ശിവനാരായണ ക്ഷേത്രം
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ നായത്തോട് ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന നായത്തോട് ശിവനാരായണ ക്ഷേത്രം അത്യപൂർവ സവിശേഷതയുള്ള ഒരു ദേവാലയമാണ്, ഒരേ വിഗ്രഹത്തിൽ ശിവനും വിഷ്ണുവും ഒരുമിച്ച് പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ അനുപമ മഹിമയാൽ പ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്. ഏകദേശം 1200 വർഷത്തെ പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം, AD 800-844 കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ചേരമാൻ പെരുമാൾ നായനാർ നിർമ്മിച്ചതായി ചരിത്രരേഖകളിൽ കാണുന്നു.
ഒരേ ശിലയിൽ ശിവനും വിഷ്ണുവും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുകയും, ഒരേ കൊടിമരത്തിൽ ശിവ-വിഷ്ണു പതാക ഉയർത്തപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ദേവഭക്തികളുടെ ഹൃദയത്തിൽ അദ്വൈതസിദ്ധിയുടെ പ്രകാശം വിതറുന്ന ദിവ്യക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രോല്പത്തി ഗുരുഹത്യാ പാപം നിവാരണമെന്ന ഉദ്ദേശത്തോടെ ചേരമാൻ രാജാവിന്റെ ഐതിഹ്യവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. 64 ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യൻ ശൈവ ഗുരുക്കളിൽ ഒരാളായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം ഈ ക്ഷേത്രനിർമ്മാണത്തിന് നേതൃത്വം നൽകി. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉത്ഭവവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് ഒരു ഐതിഹ്യം നിലവിലുണ്ട്.
മരണശയ്യയിൽ കിടന്ന രാജഗുരു, രാജാവിനോട് ഒരു ശാപത്തിന്റെ ഫലമായി താൻ വീണ്ടും ഒരു നായയായി പുനർജനിക്കുമെന്ന് വെളിപ്പെടുത്തി. മൃഗത്തിന്റെ ജന്മസ്ഥലവും അതിന്റെ വിവരണവും രാജാവിനെ അറിയിച്ചു. കൂടാതെ, മാലിന്യഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കുന്നതിൽ നിന്ന് നായയെ വിലക്കി സംരക്ഷിക്കണമെന്നും അങ്ങിനെ ആയാൽ തനിക്കു ഉടൻ മുക്തി ലഭിക്കുമെന്നും വ്യക്തമാക്കി. ഈ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തലിന് ശേഷം ഗുരു മരണപ്പെട്ടു.
രാജാവ് ഗുരു പറഞ്ഞതുപോലെ ആ നായയെ നാട്ടിൽ കണ്ടെത്തി, എന്നാൽ മാലിന്യഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കാതിരിക്കാൻ നായയുടെ കഴുത്ത് തൽക്ഷണം മുറിച്ച് അതിനെ രക്ഷിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഇതോടെ ഗുരുവിന് മുക്തി ലഭിച്ചെങ്കിലും രാജാവിന് ഗുരുഹത്യാപാപം ബാധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഈ മഹാപാപം തീർത്തും നീക്കുന്നതിനായി അദ്ദേഹം അവിടെയൊരു ശിവക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു, എന്നാൽ ക്ഷേത്രം പൂർത്തീകരിച്ചെങ്കിലും കലശ ചടങ്ങുകൾ വൈകുകയായിരുന്നു.
പിന്നീട്, പ്രമുഖ തന്ത്രിയായ കോവാട്ടുവടികൾ വിഷ്ണുദേവനായും ശിവനായും ഒരേ ശിലയിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തി കലശകർമ്മം നിർവഹിച്ചു. അങ്ങിനെ ശിവനാരായണ ക്ഷേത്രം നിലവിൽ വന്നു. പ്രധാനമൂർത്തിയായ ശങ്കരനാരായണസ്വാമി വട്ടശ്രീകോവിലിൽ കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനമരുളുന്നു. ദക്ഷിണാമൂർത്തി, ഗണപതി, സരസ്വതി, നാഗദേവതകൾ, ഹനുമാൻ, അയ്യപ്പൻ, ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണൻ എന്നിവരാണ് ഉപദേവതകൾ.
