Thiruvellamanthulli Temple is located just 2 km from Kalady, 5 km from Angamaly, and 10 km from Perumbavoor.
Thiruvellamanthulli Temple is unique as the presiding deity here is the same Mahadeva worshiped at the renowned Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur. This makes it the second most famous temple where Lord Vadakkunnatha is the primary deity.
The temple holds deep historical and spiritual significance, with a strong connection to Aryamba Devi, the mother of Adi Shankaracharya.
According to legend, Aryamba Devi used to visit the Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur on the first Monday of every month. However, as she grew older, her deteriorating health made it difficult for her to travel such a long distance. In her sorrow, she prayed to Lord Vadakkunnatha, her eyes filled with tears. One evening, the Lord appeared before her in a vision and revealed that a sacred hill lay to the west of Kalady. He told her that if she went there, she would see a white deer leaping, marking his divine presence.
Filled with devotion, Aryamba Devi immediately set out towards the hill, carrying a hand lamp. Upon reaching the top, she witnessed the white deer jumping, just as the Lord had foretold. Suddenly, a stone emerged at the exact spot where the deer had been. As the deer leapt northward, a water source miraculously appeared in the shape of its hoofprint. This well, named Kokarni, continues to provide water for the temple’s daily rituals.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Aryamba Devi bowed before the sacred stone, and at that moment, Lord Vadakkunnatha blessed her, relieving her of all physical ailments. It is believed that Lord Shiva's divine attendants, the Bhoothaganas, then constructed a temple atop the hill. Due to the miraculous healing experienced by Aryamba Devi, Lord Vadakkunnatha of Thiruvellamanthulli is worshiped as a healer of all diseases, bringing relief to devotees who seek his blessings.
തിരുവെള്ളമാൻതുള്ളി വടക്കുന്നാഥ ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രം
കാലടിയിൽനിന്ന് രണ്ട് കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൂരത്താണ് തിരുവെള്ളമാൻതുള്ളി ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. വെള്ളമാൻതുള്ളി ക്ഷേത്രത്തെ സംബന്ധിച്ച് ഒരു ഐതിഹ്യവുമുണ്ട്. ശങ്കരാചാര്യരുടെ അമ്മ ആര്യാംബ തങ്ങൾക്ക് ഒരു പുത്രനെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു നൽകിയ തൃശ്ശൂർ വടക്കുംനാഥനെ മാസത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ എല്ലാ തിങ്കളാഴ്ചയും മുടങ്ങാതെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെത്തി ദർശനം നടത്തുകയും ‘തിങ്കൾ ഭജന’ എന്ന ഭക്തിപൂർവ്വമായ ആചാരം അനുഷ്ഠിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.
എന്നാൽ വാർദ്ധക്യത്തിൻറെ അവശത മൂലം ഈ യാത്ര ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടായപ്പോൾ അമ്മ ഭഗവാനെ ഉള്ളുരുകി പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചു. ഒരു രാത്രി സ്വപ്നത്തിൽ ഭഗവാൻ വടക്കുംനാഥൻ ദർശനം നല്‍കി, കാലടിക്കു പടിഞ്ഞാറ് മാറി മറ്റൂർ കുന്നിൻ മുകളിൽ ഒരു വെളുത്ത മാൻ തുള്ളിവരുന്ന രൂപത്തിൽ തന്നെ കാണാമെന്നും, മാൻ ചെന്നുനിൽക്കുന്നിടത്ത് ലഭിക്കുന്ന ശിവവിഗ്രഹം പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ച് ആരാധിച്ചാൽ മതിയെന്നും അരുളിയെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. അതിൻ പ്രകാരം ആര്യാംബാ ദേവി കുന്നിൻ മുകളിലേക്ക് പോയപ്പോൾ, ഒരു വെളുത്ത മാൻ തുള്ളിവന്ന് ഒരു ശിവലിംഗത്തിന് കാലുകൊണ്ട് തൊട്ടു കാണിച്ചു.
ഈ ശിവലിംഗമാണ് വെള്ളമാൻതുള്ളി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. വെളുത്ത മാൻ തുള്ളിവന്ന് നിന്നതിനാൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം തിരുവെള്ളമാൻതുള്ളി ക്ഷേത്രം എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുകയായി. തൃശ്ശിവപേരൂർ വടക്കുംനാഥൻറെ മറ്റൊരു ഊരത്രേ മറ്റൂർ. മാൻ തുള്ളിച്ചാടിയപ്പോൾ അതിന്റെ കാൽപാദം ആഴത്തിൽ പതിഞ്ഞ സ്ഥലത്ത് ഒരു കിണർ രൂപപ്പെട്ടുവെന്നും, അതിൽ ഒരിക്കലും വറ്റാത്ത ജലസ്രോതസ്സ് ഉണ്ടെന്നും വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. കൊക്കർണി എന്നാണിവിടത്തെ ആ കിണർ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഇന്നും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനാവശ്യമായ എല്ലാ ജലവും ഈ കിണറിൽ നിന്നുമാണ് ലഭ്യമാക്കുന്നത്.
