Thiruvumplavil Mahadeva Temple is a renowned yet small temple located in the village of Anicadu near Muvattupuzha, at the eastern end of Ernakulam district.
Situated near the Muvattupuzha-Thodupuzha state highway, this temple is often referred to as "Kerala Kashi." The presiding deity is Lord Mahadeva, accompanied by Goddess Parvati and Lord Subramanya. The temple also houses deities such as Ganapati, Bhubaneswari, Naga, and Rakshasas.
This temple is especially known for ancestral rites, with rituals being performed in a sacred pool located on the northern side.
Devotees gather in large numbers during Mahashivaratri in the month of Kumbham, Karkidaka Vavu, and Diwali in the month of Thulam. The temple's poojas are conducted by members of the Anikkattillam family, and the administration and priesthood are overseen by the Tirthakara. According to legend, around five hundred years ago, two Brahmins from Anicadu set out on a pilgrimage to Kashi. Along their journey, they encountered a sick cow near the present temple site. One of the Brahmins stayed behind to care for the cow, while the other continued to Kashi. After a month of dedicated care, the cow fully recovered.
Though the Brahmin was pleased to have saved the cow, he was disheartened about missing his pilgrimage.
At that moment, Lord Mahadeva and Goddess Parvati appeared before him in a divine vision. The Lord reassured the devotee, saying, "We are pleased with your devotion. Goddess Parvati came before you in the form of this cow, and the care you provided was a true Devi Puja. Look closely at the spot where the cow stood—there flows a sacred stream, the real Ganga Theertham. Here, you may perform all the rituals of Kashi and attain the same spiritual merit. This place will become renowned for ancestral rites."
Thus, Thiruvumplavil Mahadeva Temple is believed to hold the spiritual essence of Kashi, offering devotees the same divine benefits of worship and ancestral rituals as those performed in Varanasi. After delivering this divine message, Lord Mahadeva and Goddess Parvati disappeared. Overjoyed, the Brahmin bathed in the sacred stream flowing from the pool and performed rituals, attaining the spiritual merit of a pilgrimage to Kashi. In due course, a Swayambhu (self-manifested) incarnation of Lord Mahadeva, along with Goddess Parvati and Lord Subramanya, appeared on the southern side of the sacred Kashitirtha. A temple was then constructed at this holy site, which came to be known as the revered Thiruvumplavil Sree Mahadeva Temple.
തിരുവുംപ്ലാവിൽ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ മുവാറ്റുപുഴ നഗരത്തിന് സമീപം (5 കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൂരത്ത്) ആനിക്കാട് ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് തിരുവുംപ്ലാവിൽ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം. മുവാറ്റുപുഴയിൽ നിന്ന് തൊടുപുഴയ്ക്കുള്ള സംസ്ഥാനപാതയ്ക്ക് സമീപം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം "കേരള കാശി" എന്ന പേരിലറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. പാർവ്വതി-സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ സമേതനായ മഹാദേവനാണ് ഇവിടെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. കൂടാതെ ഗണപതി, ഭുവനേശ്വരി, നാഗദേവതകൾ, രക്ഷസ്സ് എന്നിവരാണ് ഉപദേവതകൾ. പിതൃതർപ്പണത്തിനായി പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് ഇത്.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ വടക്കുഭാഗത്തുള്ള ഒരു കുളത്തിലാണ് ബലി കർമങ്ങൾ നടത്തുന്നത്. കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ ശിവരാത്രി, കർക്കടകവാവ്, തുലാമാസത്തിലെ ദീപാവലി തുടങ്ങിയ ദിവസം നിരവധി ഭക്തർ ഇവിടെ ബലിതർപ്പണത്തിനായി എത്തുന്നു. ഏകദേശം അഞ്ഞൂറ് വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുൻപ്, ആനിക്കാട് ദേശത്തുനിന്ന് രണ്ട് ബ്രാഹ്മണർ കാശീയാത്രയ്ക്കായി പുറപ്പെട്ടു. ഇന്നത്തെ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തിന് അല്പം വടക്കുവശത്തേക്ക് എത്തിയപ്പോൾ, ഒരു രോഗബാധിതമായ പശുവിനെ കണ്ടു. അതിൽ, ഒരു ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ ആ പശുവിനെ ശുശ്രൂഷിക്കാനായി യാത്ര അവസാനിപ്പിച്ചു, എന്നാൽ മറ്റേയാൾ കാശിയിലേക്ക് യാത്ര തുടരുകയായിരുന്നു.
ഏകദേശം ഒരു മാസത്തോളം പശുവിനെ ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ പരിചരിച്ച ബ്രാഹ്മണന്റെ ശുശ്രൂഷയുടെ ഫലമായി പശു പൂർണ്ണമായും രോഗമുക്തമായി. പക്ഷേ, കാശിയാത്ര നടത്താനാകാതെ പോയതിൽ അവനു വിഷാദം തോന്നി. അപ്പോഴാണ് ഭഗവാൻ മഹാദേവനും പാർവ്വതീദേവിയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു ദർശനം നൽകിയത്. ഭഗവാൻ ഭക്തനോട് പശുവിന്റെ രൂപത്തിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടത് ശ്രീപാർവ്വതീദേവിയാണെന്നും, പശുവിന്റെ കുളമ്പ് നിന്നിരുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തു നിന്നും ഒര ജലപ്രവാഹം വരുന്നതായി കാണണമെന്നുമാണ് അരുളിച്ചെയ്തത്. ഭാവിയിൽ ഈ സ്ഥലം പിതൃകർമ്മങ്ങൾക്ക് പ്രസിദ്ധമായിരിക്കും എന്നും അവിടെയുള്ള ജലപ്രവാഹം ഗംഗാതീർത്ഥത്തിന് സമാനമാണെന്നും ഭഗവാൻ അറിയിച്ചു.
ഭഗവാന്റെ ഈ വചനങ്ങൾ കേട്ട ശേഷം, ഭക്തൻ സന്തോഷത്തോടെ തീർത്ഥത്തിൽ കുളിച്ച് ബലി കർമങ്ങൾ നിർവഹിച്ചു, കാശീയാത്ര ചെയ്തതിന്റെ പുണ്യം സമ്പാദിച്ചു. പിന്നീട്, കാശീതീർത്ഥത്തിന്റെ തെക്കുഭാഗത്ത്, ഭഗവാൻ പാർവ്വതിയോടും സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യനോടും കൂടി സ്വയംഭൂവായി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. അവിടത്ത് ഒരു മഹാക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ഇതുതന്നെയാണ് ഇന്ന് പ്രസിദ്ധമായ തിരുവുംപ്ലാവിൽ മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം, കേരള കാശി എന്ന വിശേഷണത്തോടെയും പിതൃകർമ്മങ്ങൾക്ക് പ്രസിദ്ധമായ തീർത്ഥാടന കേന്ദ്രമായും മാറി.
