Uliyannoor Sree Mahadeva Temple, located in Uliyannoor, Aluva, is a historic temple designed and constructed by the legendary architect Sri Uliyannoor Perunthachan.
It stands about 20 meters from the original temple founded by Parashurama in 525 BC. The main deity, Lord Shiva, faces east towards the Periyar River. The temple's garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) has a circumference of 42 meters, showcasing Perunthachan’s architectural brilliance. The structure is supported by 68 intricately carved wooden pillars, symbolizing the 64 traditional art forms and the four Vedas.
The temple also features a spacious Namaskara Mandapam, enhancing its grandeur.
A large statue of Nandi, facing west, is situated in front of the sanctum. Adjacent to the temple, the deity of Goddess Parvati also faces west, with Annapoorneshwari as a secondary deity. Towards the south of the temple lies the Sri Madathillappan Temple, featuring a 12-foot-tall idol and a Swayambhu Ganapathi at its southern entrance. Together, these shrines form the Uliyannoor Mahadeva Temple Complex. According to legend, Parashurama manifested Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati through meditation during the Dvapara Yuga and installed them in the temple through the Shakti Panchakshari meditation.
Periyar River is believed to flow eastward to calm the supreme energy of Mahadeva.
Mukhamandapam (front hall) is built in a rectangular shape on the east side. Although Goddess Parvati’s shrine originally lacked a prayer hall, a small facade has recently been added. A Nandikeswara idol, originally made of granite, stands in front of the main hall. It is said that Tipu Sultan attempted to destroy this idol during his military campaigns, but it was later covered in brass to protect it from further damage.
The temple’s Dwajastambham (flagstaff) is aligned with Lord Shiva’s path. The temple complex also includes Dakshinamoorthy in the main shrine, Ganapati in the southwest, Subramanian in the northwest, Nagadeva in the southwest, and Brahmarakshas in the northwest. Additionally, the Madathilappan Temple holds equal significance within the complex.
The temple follows a strict daily ritual schedule with five poojas and three Sheevelis (processions). Devotees can visit the temple between 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Annual festival begins in the Malayalam month of Dhanu with the flag hoisting on Chatayam Nakshatra and culminates after 10 days on Thiruvathira Nakshatra. Maha Shivratri, observed in Kumbham, is another major festival celebrated with great devotion.
ഉളിയന്നൂർ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിൽ ആലുവയിൽ നിന്ന് നാലുകിലോമീറ്റർ മാത്രം സഞ്ചരിച്ചാൽ പെരിയാറിൻറെ കരയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഉളിയന്നൂർ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെത്താം. പരശുരാമൻ സ്ഥാപിച്ചതായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം പ്രശസ്ത ശില്പി പെരുന്തച്ചൻ അതിസുന്ദരമായി പുനർനിർമ്മിച്ചതാണ്. കിഴക്കോട്ടു ദർശനമായി പെരിയാറിനഭിമുഖമായി ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയുള്ള ശ്രീകോവിൽ 42 മീറ്റർ ചുറ്റളവുള്ള അതിഗംഭീരമായ വട്ടശ്രീകോവിലാണ്. 64 കലകളെയും നാലു വേദങ്ങളെയും പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കുന്ന 68 കഴുക്കോലുകൾ ഇവിടെ കാണാം.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് വിപുലമായ നമസ്കാരമണ്ഡപവും ഉണ്ട്. പ്രതിഷ്ഠയിൽ അർദ്ധനാരീശ്വര സങ്കൽപ്പമാണ് നിറഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കുന്നത്. ശിവനും പാർവതിയും ഒരേ അലയക്കെട്ടിനകത്ത് എതിർ ദിശകളിൽ ദർശനമായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു. ആറടി ഉയരമുള്ള മഹാദേവലിംഗം സ്വയംഭൂവിഗ്രഹമായതിനാൽ ഇതുവരെ അഷ്ടബന്ധകലശം നടത്തിയിട്ടില്ല. ഐതിഹ്യമനുസരിച്ച്, ദ്വാപരയുഗത്തിൽ പരശുരാമൻ തപസ്സിലൂടെ ശിവപാർവതികളെ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുത്തി ശക്തിപഞ്ചാക്ഷരി ധ്യാനരൂപത്തിൽ ഇവിടേയ്ക്ക് ആവിഷ്കരിച്ചതാണെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.
മഹാദേവൻറെ ഉഗ്രത ശമിപ്പിക്കാൻ പെരിയാർ കിഴക്കോട്ടേ ഒഴുകിപ്പോകുന്നതായും വിശ്വാസം.
ക്ഷേത്ര സമുച്ചയത്തിൽ മഹാദേവനും പാർവതിയും മാത്രമല്ല, വിവിധ ഉപദേവതാ പ്രതിഷ്ഠകളും ഉണ്ട്. പ്രധാന ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ ദക്ഷിണാമൂർത്തി, ഗണപതി, നാലമ്പലത്തിനകത്ത് തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറ് അയ്യപ്പൻ, വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറ് സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ, നാലമ്പലത്തിന് പുറത്തു തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറ് നാഗദേവതകളും ബ്രഹ്മരക്ഷസ്സും, വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറ് മഹാവിഷ്ണു, വടക്കുകിഴക്ക് ദുർഗ്ഗാ ദേവി, തെക്കുകിഴക്ക് യക്ഷി എന്നിവരാണ് പ്രധാന ഉപദേവതകൾ.
നിത്യേന അഞ്ചു പൂജകളും മൂന്നു ശീവേലികളും ഉള്ള മഹാക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ദർശനം രാവിലെ 5 മുതൽ ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് 12 വരെയും വൈകീട്ട് 5 മുതൽ രാത്രി 8 വരെയും സാധ്യമാണ്. ധനുമാസത്തിലെ ചതയം നാളിൽ കൊടിയേറി തിരുവാതിര നാളിൽ ആറാട്ടോടെ പത്തുദിവസത്തെ ഉത്സവം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. കൂടാതെ കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ മഹാശിവരാത്രി പൂജകളും പ്രധാനമാണ്.
