Uliyannoor Mahadeva Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated in Uliyannoor, an island formed by the Periyar River.
Uliyannoor Sree Mahadeva Temple is accessible via a bridge connecting it to the mainland.This ancient temple, featuring a vritha vimana (circular sanctum), is built on a granite adhishtana (base). It follows the sandhara style of architecture, with a unified tiled roof and four cardinal openings.
The namaskara mandapa, square in shape, houses a granite Nandi. Lord Shiva, the principal deity, faces the east, while Goddess Parvati, enshrined in the rear, faces the west. A sub-shrine is dedicated to Goddess Durga.
The balipida (sacrificial altar) is positioned outside, and the pranala (drainage spout) features a gomukha (cow's face) at the tip, supported by a Yakshi figure, adhering to traditional temple design.
The temple, once in ruins, has been restored by the temple trust, which now manages its functions. The remains of an old laterite stone compound wall still surround the temple complex.
According to legend, the temple was originally constructed by the legendary master builder Perunthachan.
ഉളിയന്നൂർ ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
കേരളത്തിലെ എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ ആലുവയിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ഉളിയന്നൂർ മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം പരമ്പരാഗത വാസ്തുശില്പിയായ പെരുന്തച്ചൻ നിർമ്മിച്ചതായി വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇതൊരു വാസ്തുവിദ്യാ സൗന്ദര്യ കാഴ്ചയാണ്, പേരുന്തച്ചന്റെ അസാധാരണ കരകൗശല വൈദഗ്ദ്ധ്യം ഇന്നും ഇവിടെ ദൃശ്യമാണ്.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ആകർഷണം ശ്രീകോവിലാണ്, അതിന്റെ മുകളിലുള്ള ഒരൊറ്റ താഴികക്കുടത്തിന് കീഴിൽ സംഗമിക്കുന്ന 68 മരത്തടികൾ അത്യന്തം നൈപുണ്യത്തോടെ നിർമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. വൃത്താകൃതിയിലുള്ള ശ്രീകോവിൽ (വട്ടശ്രീകോവിൽ) ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ അപൂർവ്വമാണ്, അതിനാൽ തന്നെ ഇത് അത്ഭുതകരമായ ഒരു ശില്പകലയാണെന്ന് പറയാം.
ഭഗവാൻ ശിവനു സമർപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ആലുവ റെയിൽവേ സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ നിന്നും കെ.എസ്.ആർ.ടി.സി ബസ് സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ നിന്നും ഏകദേശം 1.5 കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൂരത്തിലാണ്.
