Puthiyakavu Devi Temple is an ancient temple located in Vadakkekkara, at the northern end of Ernakulam district.
It is believed that the area where the temple stands today was once a dense forest with an open ground nearby. The presiding deity, Kavilamma, is worshipped in the fierce and powerful form of Bhadrakali. Despite her terrifying appearance as a Chaturbahu (four-armed) and Trilochana (three-eyed) Goddess, she is revered as a compassionate mother who dispels darkness and bestows wisdom.
Known as Shubhamkari, she removes fear and suffering, and is believed to be the controller of Saturn in the Navagrahas. Devotees seek her blessings to overcome the negative effects of Kandakashani, Ashtamashani, and Ezharashani. One of the special rituals at the temple is the Rahukala Pooja, performed to appease Rahu, a malefic planet in astrology.
Lighting a lamp during the Rahu period and worshipping the Goddess is believed to counteract the ill effects of Rahu, as mentioned in the Navagraha Mangalashtakam, which states that Durga Puja brings Rahu’s blessings. Since Rahu does not have a dedicated temple in the zodiac, he is believed to reside in the sanctum of Venus, which represents the Goddess.
The main offering at Puthiyakavu Devi Temple is Kuruthi Pushpanjali, performed every Tuesday. This ritual symbolizes a symbolic sacrifice, where floral honey, turmeric powder, and lime are mixed to create a blood-red color, which is then offered to the Goddess. Additionally, the temple is known for community worship ceremonies such as Mahamrityunjaya Homa, Saubhagya Pooja, and other rituals dedicated to family well-being and prosperity.

എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ വടക്കേ അറ്റത്ത് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ഗ്രാമപഞ്ചായത്താണ് വടക്കേക്കര. പറവൂർ താലൂക്കിലെ പറവൂർ ബ്ലോക്കിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ പ്രദേശത്ത് നിരവധി ചരിത്രപരവും മതപരവുമായ സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു. ഇവിടെയുള്ള പ്രധാന ദേവീക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് വടക്കേക്കര പുതിയകാവ് ദേവീക്ഷേത്രം. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ശതാബ്ദങ്ങളുടെ പഴക്കമുണ്ടെന്ന് ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങളും പാരമ്പര്യങ്ങളും വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു. പുത്രവൽസലതയും ശത്രുനിഗ്രഹ ശേഷിയും ഒരുപോലെ ഉള്ള ദേവിയായി ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ദേവി ഭദ്രകാളിയായി പൂജിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
പണ്ട് ഈ പ്രദേശം കൊടുംകാടായിരുന്നുവെന്നും സമീപഭാഗത്ത് ഒരു വിശാലമായ മൈതാനമുണ്ടായിരുന്നുവെന്നുമാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം. ദേവി ഏറ്റവും രൗദ്രഭാവത്തിലുള്ള ഭദ്രകാളീമൂർത്തിയായി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. കാഴ്ചയിൽ ഭയങ്കരരൂപമുള്ളതായിരുന്നാലും ഭക്തർക്ക് അനുഗ്രഹവർഷിണിയായ മാതാവാണ് ദേവി. ദുർഗ്ഗാഭാവങ്ങളിൽ ഏറ്റവും ഉഗ്രമായ പ്രത്യക്ഷതയാണെങ്കിലും ദേവി ഭക്തരിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ആരാധനയ്ക്ക് അതീവ പ്രസാദവതിയാണ്.
ഭയവും ദുഃഖവും അകറ്റി ശുഭപ്രദായിനിയായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്ന ദേവിയെ ശുഭംകരി എന്നായും വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാറുണ്ട്. നവഗ്രഹങ്ങളിൽ ശനിയുടെ നിയന്ത്രണാധിപതിയായ ദേവിയുടെ അനുഗ്രഹത്തോടെ കണ്ടകശ്ശനി, അഷ്ടമശ്ശനി, ഏഴരശ്ശനി തുടങ്ങിയ ദോഷങ്ങൾ നീങ്ങിയെന്ന് വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്. അതിനാൽ ശനിദോഷപരിഹാരത്തിനായി ഭക്തർ ദേവീശരണം തേടുന്നു. രാഹുകാല പൂജയാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വഴിപാടുകളിൽ ഒന്നായി കരുതുന്നത്. ദേവീപ്രീതി നേടി രാഹുദോഷം മാറ്റുന്നതിനായി ഈ പൂജ നിർവ്വഹിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വഴിപാടുകളിൽ പ്രാധാന്യമേറിയത് കുരുതി പുഷ്പാഞ്ജലിയാണ്. എല്ലാ ചൊവ്വാഴ്ചകളിലും ഈ പൂജ നടത്തി ഭക്തർ ദേവിയുടെ അനുഗ്രഹം പ്രാപിക്കുന്നു. മഹാമൃത്യുഞ്ജയ ഹോമം, സൗഭാഗ്യ പൂജ എന്നിവയും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്ന സാമൂഹ്യാരാധനകളിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. കുടുംബശ്രേയസ്സിനും നാടിന്റെ ഐശ്വര്യത്തിനും വേണ്ടി നടത്തുന്ന ഈ ആരാധനകൾ കൊണ്ട് വടക്കേക്കര പുതിയകാവ് ദേവീക്ഷേത്രം വിശിഷ്ടമായ സ്ഥാനം കൈവരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
