Vellurkunnam Mahadeva Temple, located on a hill near the Muvattupuzha River in Ernakulam district, is an ancient Shiva temple of great religious significance.
The main deity, Lord Shiva, is worshipped alongside Goddess Parvati, with additional shrines for Lord Ganesha, Lord Ayyappa, Lord Krishna, and the Nagarajas. As one of the 108 Shiva temples in Kerala, it is also an important pilgrimage site for Sabarimala devotees, especially during Mandalakkalam.
The temple hosts major festivals, including the ten-day Thiruvathira Arattu in Dhanu, Maha Shivaratri in Kumbham, Vishu in Medam, and special rituals on every new moon day. On Shivaratri, large crowds gather for Balitharppanam offerings. The Sreekovil and mandapam are beautifully situated along the river, adding to the temple’s spiritual charm. Managed by a devotee-led trust, the temple continues to be a revered center of worship and tradition.
വെള്ളൂർക്കുന്നം മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം മുവാറ്റുപുഴ
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ മുവാറ്റുപുഴ നഗരത്തിനടുത്ത് ഒരു കുന്നിൻ മുകളിലെ മനോഹരമായ സ്ഥലത്ത് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രമാണ് വെള്ളൂർക്കുന്നം മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം. മൂവാറ്റുപുഴയാറിന്റെ സമീപത്തായതിനാൽ പിതൃതർപ്പണത്തിനായി നാടിന്റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് ഭക്തർ ഇവിടെ എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നു. പാർവ്വതിസമേതനായ പരമശിവൻ ആണ് മുഖ്യപ്രതിഷ്ഠ, കൂടാതെ ഗണപതി, അയ്യപ്പൻ, ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണൻ, നാഗദേവതകൾ തുടങ്ങിയ ഉപദേവതകളുടെയും സന്നിധി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ കാണാം.
പുരാതന കേരളത്തിലെ 108 ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായ ഇത് ശബരിമല തീർത്ഥാടകർക്കുള്ള ഒരു പ്രധാന ഇടത്താവളവുമാണ്. മണ്ഡലകാലത്ത് അനേകം അയ്യപ്പഭക്തർ ക്ഷേത്രം സന്ദർശിക്കുകയും അവർക്കുള്ള സൗകര്യങ്ങൾ ക്ഷേത്ര ഭരണസമിതി ഒരുക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവങ്ങളിൽ ധനുമാസത്തിലെ തിരുവാതിര ആറാട്ടോടൊപ്പം നടത്തുന്ന പത്തു ദിവസത്തെ കൊടിയേറ്റുത്സവം, കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ മഹാശിവരാത്രി, മേടമാസത്തിലെ വിഷു, എല്ലാമാസത്തിലെയും അമാവാസി എന്നിവ പ്രധാനമാണ്.
ശിവരാത്രിയன்று വലിയ സംഘാടനത്തോടെ ബലിതർപ്പണ ചടങ്ങുകൾ ഇവിടെ നടക്കുന്നു. മൂവാറ്റുപുഴയാറിന്റെ സമീപത്തായി ബലിത്തറയും മണ്ഡപവും അർപ്പിതിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ഭക്തജനങ്ങളുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലുള്ള ട്രസ്റ്റിന്റെ കീഴിലാണ് പരിപാലനം.
