Sree Venugopala Krishna Swami Devasthan is a Hindu temple located in Chendamangalam, Kerala, India. Established in 1900, historically known as Jayantha Mangalam, situated 42 km from Ernakulam, 22 km from Aluva, and 5 km from North Paravur.
Sree Venugopala Krishna Swami Temple is dedicated to Lord Venugopala Krishna Swamy, with the main idol being a Shila Vigraha (stone idol) of the deity. The temple also houses an Utsava Murti (processional idol) of Lord Venugopala Krishna, accompanied by the idols of Garuda and Hanuman at his feet.
The temple's annual festival is a six-day-long celebration held in the month of Vaisakh, attracting devotees from various regions.
The establishment of the temple traces back to the Gaud Saraswat Brahmins (GSB) community, who had migrated and settled in Cochin and its neighboring areas, including Chendamangalam. Lacking a place of worship in the village, the local GSB families were initially forced to travel on foot to the nearest temple in North Paravur for their spiritual needs. Recognizing this challenge, they united under the leadership of Chennoth Parambil Sri Dasa Prabhu and took the initiative to establish this temple, fulfilling their long-cherished dream of having a dedicated place of worship in Chendamangalam.
The devotees approached Paliath Valiyachan of the Paliyam Swaroopam and sought his assistance for the construction of the temple. In response, he generously donated land for the temple premises. With liberal contributions from the local community, the temple was built, and the Pratishta (consecration) was performed on April 30, 1900.
To ensure financial stability for the temple, twelve community members, under the leadership of Chennoth Parambil Ramachandra Prabhu, initiated a Chitty in 1920. The profits generated from this venture were used to acquire land to cover the temple’s daily expenses.
In 1956, the children of Chennoth Parambil Sri Dasa Prabhu established an Endowment Trust in his honor. Through this trust, 10 acres of land and Rs. 65,000 were donated to the temple.
Over time, essential infrastructure, including the Agrasala (guest house for devotees) and Anapandal (elephant shelter), was added to the temple complex.
A major renovation took place in 1995, during which the Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) was covered with copper plating.
A significant spiritual event occurred in 1973, when Srimat Sudheendra Tirtha Swamiji observed his Chaturmasya Vrita at this temple.
Today, Chennamangalam is home to approximately 100 Gaud Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) families, who continue to uphold and preserve the temple’s traditions.
ശ്രീ വേണുഗോപാല സ്വാമി ദേവസ്ഥാനം
കേരളത്തിലെ എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ ചേന്ദമംഗലം ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു സുപ്രസിദ്ധ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ശ്രീ വേണുഗോപാല കൃഷ്ണ സ്വാമി ദേവസ്ഥാനം. എറണാകുളം നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് 42 കിലോമീറ്റർ, ആലുവയിൽ നിന്ന് 22 കിലോമീറ്റർ, വടക്കൻ പരൂരിൽ നിന്ന് 5 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയാണ് ഈ ദേവസ്ഥാനം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. 1900-ലാണ് ഈ മഹാക്ഷേത്രം പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടത്.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ശ്രീ വേണുഗോപാല കൃഷ്ണസ്വാമി ആയിരിക്കുന്നു. മുഖ്യ വിഗ്രഹം ശിലാമയമായ ശ്രീ കൃഷ്ണ വിഗ്രഹം ആണ്. കൂടാതെ, കൃഷ്ണന്റെ ഉത്സവ വിഗ്രഹവും, ഗരുഡനും ഹനുമാനുമുള്ള പ്രതിഷ്ഠകളും ക്ഷേത്രപരിസരത്ത് കാണാം. വൈശാഖ മാസത്തിൽ ആറുദിവസം നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന ഉത്സവം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ആഘോഷങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ്.
കൊച്ചി നഗരത്തിൽ ആദ്യകാലത്ത് കുടിയേറിയ ഗൌഡ സാരസ്വത ബ്രാഹ്മണർ പിന്നീട് പരിസര പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലേക്കും, ചേന്ദമംഗലത്തേയ്ക്കും കുടിയേറി. ഇവിടെ തങ്ങളുടെ ആരാധനയ്ക്കായി ക്ഷേത്രമൊരുക്കാനാകാതെ വടക്കൻ പരൂരിലെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് കാൽനടയായി പോകേണ്ടി വന്ന അവസ്ഥ മാറുന്നതിനായി, ചേർണ്ണോത്ത് പറമ്പിൽ ദാസപ്രഭുവിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥാപിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.
പാലിയം സ്വരൂപത്തിലെ പാലിയം വലിയച്ഛനെ സമീപിച്ചപ്പോൾ, അദ്ദേഹം ക്ഷേത്രനിർമാണത്തിനായി സ്ഥലദാനം ചെയ്തു. തദ്ദേശവാസികളുടെ സംഭാവനകളോടെ ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മാണം ആരംഭിച്ചു, ഒടുവിൽ 1900 ഏപ്രിൽ 30-നു പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നിർവഹിച്ചു.
1920-ൽ, ചേർണ്ണോത്ത് പറമ്പിൽ രാമചന്ദ്ര പ്രഭുവിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ 12 സമുദായാംഗങ്ങൾ ചേർന്ന് ഒരു ചിട്ടി ആരംഭിച്ചു. ഇതിൽ നിന്നുള്ള വരുമാനത്തോടെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ദൈനംദിന ചെലവുകൾ നിറവേറ്റുന്നതിനായി സ്ഥലം സ്വന്തമാക്കി.
1956-ൽ, ചേർണ്ണോത്തുപറമ്പിൽ ദാസപ്രഭുവിന്റെ മക്കൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സ്മരണാർത്ഥം ഒരു ട്രസ്റ്റ് രൂപവത്കരിച്ചു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനായി 10 ഏക്കർ ഭൂമി, 65,000 രൂപ സംഭാവനയായി നൽകി. തുടർന്ന് അഗ്രശാല, ആനപ്പന്തൽ എന്നിവയുടെ നിർമ്മാണം പൂർത്തിയായി.
1995-ൽ, ക്ഷേത്രം പുനരുദ്ധരിച്ചു, ശ്രീകോവിൽ ചെമ്പുകൊണ്ട് പൊതിഞ്ഞു.
ഇന്ന് ചേന്ദമംഗലത്ത് ഏകദേശം 100-ഓളം ഗൌഡ സാരസ്വത ബ്രാഹ്മണ കുടുംബങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്. 1973-ൽ, ശ്രീമദ് സുധീന്ദ്ര തീർത്ഥ സ്വാമിജി ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ചാതുർമാസ്യ വ്രതം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു എന്നത് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനുള്ള അദ്വിതീയമായ ഒരു മഹത്വം ആണ്.
