Annamalai Temple, located in Karikodu within the Idukki district, is renowned for its dedication to Lord Siva and is notable for being an 1800-year-old temple.
Constructed in the Chola architectural style, the temple features a window adorned with nine lattices that represent the Navagrahas, or nine celestial bodies. Entirely crafted from granite, the intricate carvings of the temple date back to the Chola era.
Karikode served as the capital of the Vadakumkur dynasty during the Chola reign and is recognized as one of the 74 Shiva temples established across India. Annamalanathar temple, which had remained hidden in the forest for many years, underwent renovation a few years ago.
The temple can be observed within the temple grounds, preserved by the Kerala Department of Archeology. The ancient idols from the temple are housed in the Kayamkulam museum. The temple's rectangular structure is a testament to Tamil cultural heritage.
അണ്ണാമലനാഥർ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
ഇടുക്കി ജില്ലയിലെ കാരിക്കോട് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന അണ്ണാമലൈ ക്ഷേത്രം ഏകദേശം 1800 വർഷം പഴക്കമുള്ള ഒരു പുരാതന ശിവക്ഷേത്രമാണെന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. കരിങ്കല്ലിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ച ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ കൊത്തുപണികൾ ചോള കാലഘട്ടത്തെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ചോള ഭരണകാലത്ത് വടക്കുംകൂർ രാജവംശത്തിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനമായിരുന്നു കാരിക്കോട്.
ഇന്ത്യയിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ച 74 ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം. പതിറ്റാണ്ടുകളോളം കാടിനടിയിലായിരുന്ന അണ്ണാമലനാഥർ ക്ഷേത്രം കുറച്ച് വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുമ്പാണ് നവീകരിച്ചത്. കേരളാ പുരാവസ്തു വകുപ്പിന്റെ കീഴിൽ, ക്ഷേത്ര പരിസരത്ത് പഴയ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങൾ കാണാനാകും. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പുരാതന വിഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ കായംകുളം മ്യുസിയത്തിൽ സൂക്ഷിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ദീർഘചതുരാകൃതിയിലുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രനിർമ്മിതി പൂർണ്ണമായും തമിഴ് സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റെ സ്വാധീനത്തിലാണ്.
ശിവനും പാർവതിയും സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ ഗണപതിയുമായി ചേർന്ന് ഏകാശിലാപീഠത്തിൽ ദർശനം നൽകുന്നു. പഞ്ചലോഹത്തിൽ നിർമ്മിതമായ വിഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. മറ്റ് ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളുമായി താരതമ്യപ്പെടുത്തുമ്പോൾ, പൂർണപ്രദക്ഷിണം നടത്താൻ കഴിയുന്ന പ്രത്യേകതയും, തെക്കോട്ട് ദർശനം ലഭ്യമാകുകയും വടക്കോട്ട് ഓവുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രത്യേകതകളും, താമരകുളവും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകതകളാണ്. എല്ലാ പ്രദോഷവും പൗർണമിയും സമുചിതമായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.
