The five temples were constructed to symbolize the five Bhavas of Sree Ayyappan. These temples, known as Aaranyakavu, Achancovil, Kulathupuzha, Sabarimala, and Ayyappankovil, were established by Parasurama.
According to legend, Lord Ayyappa visited Parsurama and requested him to construct a temple in his honor. Certain Brahmins were entrusted with the duty of performing rituals in accordance with the "Tantrasasthra." The heightened devotion manifested through the thrice-daily prayers pleased Sree Ayyappa, who subsequently blessed the village with immense joy and prosperity for the entire world.
However, as time progressed, the Brahmin families responsible for the prayers diminished, leading to a decline in worship. This discontented Lord Ayyappa, who retaliated by setting the village ablaze and afflicting its inhabitants with illness. Over time, the temple fell into neglect, suffered further damage from wild animals, and ultimately faced destruction on six separate occasions.
The ancient Ayyapppankovil temple continues to serve as a significant site of worship, attracting numerous devotees who remain devoted to its sanctity, even though the "Davaprasnam" is held in Thoppipala. Despite multiple efforts to restore the original structure of the temple, the faithful have been unsuccessful in returning the Ayyappankovil to its former glory.
Notwithstanding the demolitions and relocation of the temple, it is the rich history and deep-seated faith of the community that continually draws them back to this sacred site, which is slated for reconstruction. The Sastha temple is designed to remain above water even during severe monsoon conditions. The construction plan involves expanding the temple's foundation and positioning it above the maximum water level of the Idukki dam reservoir. Additionally, a steel bridge will be constructed from the bank to facilitate easy access for pilgrims and devotees to the Sastha temple.
അയ്യപ്പൻകോവിൽ ശ്രീധർമ്മശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രം ചെറുതോണി
ഇടുക്കി ജില്ലയിൽ അയ്യപ്പൻകോവിൽ പഞ്ചായത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഗ്രാമമാണ് അയ്യപ്പൻകോവിൽ. കട്ടപ്പന നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് 14.4 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയാണ് ഈ ഗ്രാമം. ചെറുതോണിയിൽ നിന്ന് ഒരു കിലോമീറ്റർ സഞ്ചരിച്ചാൽ, മൂന്ന് മിനിറ്റിനുള്ളിൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെത്താൻ സാധിക്കും. ഇടുക്കി അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ ജലസംഭരണ മേഖലയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ പഞ്ചായത്തും, അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ പരിധിയിൽ വരുന്നു.
ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രം അയ്യപ്പൻകോവിൽ പഞ്ചായത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. പരശുരാമൻ സ്ഥാപിച്ച അഞ്ചു ശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായാണ് ഇത് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. അയ്യപ്പൻകോവിൽ, ആര്യങ്കാവ്, കുളത്തുപുഴ, ശബരിമല എന്നിവയാണ് മറ്റ് ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ. ഇവിടെയുള്ള പ്രതിഷ്ഠകൾ ഭഗവാന്റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗവങ്ങളെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കിയുള്ളതാണെന്ന് ഐതിഹ്യം പറയുന്നു. ഇടുക്കി ഡാമിന്റെ പ്രധാന ഭാഗത്താണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. ശ്രീകോവിലിന്റെ വടക്കുഭാഗത്ത് ഒരു ഗുഹയുണ്ട്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഇടതുകോണിൽ കോവിൽമല, കോഴിമല എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന സ്ഥലമുണ്ട്.
പാണ്ഡവരുടെ വനവാസക്കാലത്ത് ഈ ഗുഹകൾ നിർമ്മിച്ചതാണെന്നും, ഇതിന്റെ മറ്റൊരു വാതിൽ പെരിയാർ, ശബരിമല, മധുരമീനാക്ഷിക്ഷേത്രം എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലേക്കാണ് തുറക്കുന്നത്. നിലവറ മേൽശാന്തി ശാന്തിമഠമായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നുവെന്നും പുരാവൃത്തം പറയുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് പിന്നിൽ പരിപാവനമായ പെരിയാർ നദി ഒഴുകുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു പടിഞ്ഞാറ് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഭീമൻചുവട്, സീതക്കയം എന്നീ പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്. ആറ്റിലൂടെ മൂന്നു കിലോമീറ്റർ യാത്ര ചെയ്താൽ 'ഭീമൻചുവട്' എത്തും, അവിടെനിന്ന് രണ്ടുകിലോമീറ്റർ താഴെ 'സീതക്കയം' സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. പാറകൊണ്ടു നിർമ്മിച്ച പീഠത്തിന്റെ മുകളിൽ ശ്രീകോവിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു.
ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ ധർമ്മശാസ്താവ് ഉണ്ട്, കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനം ലഭ്യമാണ്. വടക്കുഭാഗത്ത് മാളികപ്പുറത്തമ്മയും, മുന്നിൽ ഇടതുഭാഗത്ത് കിണറ്റിനു മുന്നിൽ സർപ്പക്കാവും കാണാം. കന്നിമൂലയിൽ ഗണപതി ഉണ്ട്. രാവിലെ അഞ്ചര മുതൽ പത്തരവരെയും, വൈകിട്ട് അഞ്ചര മുതൽ എഴരവരെയുമാണ് പുജാസമയം. ശബരിമലയെപ്പോലെ, ഇവിടെ പൂജകളും വഴിപാടുകളും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. എല്ലാ മാസവും ആയില്യപൂജയും, ശനിയാഴ്ചകളിൽ ശാന്തിദോഷ നിവാരണത്തിനായി പ്രത്യേക പൂജയും പ്രധാനമാണ്. ശ്രീരാമജയന്തി, ഗണേശോത്സവം എന്നിവയും ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.
ശനിദോഷം നിവാരണത്തിനായി നടത്തുന്ന പൂജകൾ വളരെ പ്രധാനമാണ്. ശ്രീരാമജയന്തി, ഗണേശോത്സവം, ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണജയന്തി, ശിവരാത്രി തുടങ്ങിയ ആഘോഷങ്ങൾ ഇവിടെ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. കർക്കിടവാവുബലി പ്രത്യേകമായ ഒരു ചടങ്ങാണ്. വർഷത്തിൽ ഒരിക്കൽ സപ്താഹയജ്ഞം നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. മകരവിളക്കിന്റെ ഉത്സവം ജനുവരി ഒന്നിന് ആരംഭിച്ച് പതിനാലിന് അവസാനിക്കുന്നു. മകരവിളക്കുമഹോത്സവത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് ഉപ്പുതറ ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഭഗവാൻറെ തിടമ്പേറ്റിയ ഗജവീരൻ, താലപ്പൊലി, പാണ്ടിമേളം, തെയ്യം, വാദ്യമേളങ്ങൾ, കരകയാട്ടം, മുളപ്പാരി, മാവിളക്ക്, അലങ്കാരകാവടികൾ എന്നിവയുടെ അകമ്പടിയോടെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് എഴുന്നെള്ളും. ഉത്സവത്തിനുശേഷം ആദിവാസികളുടെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട മീനൂട്ട് മഹോത്സവവും കൂത്തും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നടക്കാറുണ്ട്.
