An ancient temple known as Mudaliar Madom is situated two kilometers east of Thodupuzha town, perched on a picturesque hill adjacent to a stream. This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located within the Idukki District.
The principal deities worshipped at Thodupuzha Muthaliyarmadom Sree Mahadeva Temple are Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Rudran. Additionally, the temple is home to other deities, including Ganapathy, Shree Sastha, Shree Mahakali, Shree Kamakshi, Shree Rashus, and Nagaraja.
The committee members resolved to install an additional Shiva Lingam in the Mudaliar Madom temple, where the Venkatesha idol had been venerated approximately 200 years prior. The committee's objective was to acquire the Salagramalingam, which had been left unattended in the Annamalai temple. Kavukat Ayyappan Pillai, along with committee members Thayakodath Shankarappillai, Vazhikkal Shankarappillai, and the temple priest Kochu Potti, formulated a plan.
They concealed the carved Shivalinga in a well along the route. Under the guise of time constraints, they transported the Salagramalingam from Annamalai, along with the Peedom, and installed it in the Mudaliar Madom. Additionally, a Salagrama was placed in the shrine dedicated to the Vishnu idol located to the north. Subsequently, the Kanjar section sought legal intervention, which ultimately led to a resolution.
This resulted in the establishment of three shrines: Lord Shiva to the north, the newly installed Salagramalingam in the center (Rudrasankalpam), and Venkitanathan (Vishnu) to the south. The Vellalar temple, known as Mudaliyar Matham in Thodupuzha, is distinguished by its three sanctuaries. The temple's principal festival, Shivaratri, is celebrated in the month of Kumbham.
മുതലിയാർ മഠം ക്ഷേത്രം, തൊടുപുഴ
തൊടുപുഴ ടൗണിൽ നിന്ന് രണ്ട് കിലോമീറ്റർ കിഴക്കു സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു കുന്നിൽ, ഗ്രാമഭംഗിയുള്ള ഒരു തോടിനടുത്താണ് മുതലിയാർ മഠം എന്ന പുരാതന ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. അവസാനത്തെ പെരുമാളായ ചേരമാൻ പെരുമാൾ നായനാർ തന്റെ രാജ്യത്തെ 18 നാടുകളായി തിരിച്ച് അനന്തരാവകാശികൾക്കും സാമന്തന്മാർക്കും കൈമാറി, പിന്നീട് മക്കത്തേക്കു പോയെന്നു പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.
200 വർഷം മുമ്പ് വെങ്കിടേശവിഗ്രഹം വച്ചു പൂജിച്ചിരുന്ന മുതലിയാർ മഠം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഒരു പുതിയ ശിവലിംഗം സ്ഥാപിക്കാൻ കമ്മറ്റി തീരുമാനിച്ചു. അണ്ണാമലക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ അനാഥമായി കിടന്നിരുന്ന സാളഗ്രാമലിംഗം കൈവശമാക്കുക എന്നതാണ് കമ്മറ്റിയുടെ ലക്ഷ്യം. കാവുക്കാട്ട് അയ്യപ്പൻപിള്ള, തയ്യാറക്കോടത്ത് ശങ്കരപ്പിള്ള, വഴിക്കൽ ശങ്കരപ്പിള്ള എന്നിവരടങ്ങിയ കമ്മറ്റിയും ക്ഷേത്ര പൂജാരി കൊച്ചു പോറ്റിയും ചേർന്ന് ഒരു തന്ത്രം രൂപീകരിച്ചു. കൊത്താൻ ഏൽപ്പിച്ച ശിവലിംഗം കൊണ്ടുവരുന്ന വഴിയിൽ ഒരു കിണറ്റിൽ ഒളിപ്പിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.
അണ്ണാമലയിലെ സാളഗ്രാമ ലിംഗം പീഠത്തോടൊപ്പം ചുമന്നു കൊണ്ടു വന്നതിന്റെ കാരണം സമയത്തിനു കിട്ടിയില്ല എന്നതാണ്. മുതലിയാർ മഠത്തിൽ ഈ ലിംഗം പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. വടക്കേ ഭാഗത്തുള്ള വിഷ്ണു വിഗ്രഹത്തിന്റെ ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ സാളഗ്രാമം പ്രതിഷ്ടിച്ചതാണ്. തുടർന്ന്, കാഞ്ഞാർ വിഭാഗം കോടതിയെ സമീപിച്ചു, ഒടുവിൽ ഒരു ഒത്തുതീർപ്പിൽ എത്തി. പിന്നീട് മൂന്നു ശ്രീകോവിലുകളായി. വടക്കു ശിവൻ, നടുക്കു പുതിയ സാളഗ്രാമലിംഗം (രുദ്രസങ്കൽപ്പം), തെക്കു വേങ്കിടനാഥൻ (വിഷ്ണു) എന്നിവയോടുകൂടി തൊടുപുഴയിലെ മുതലിയാർ മഠം എന്ന വെള്ളാളർ ക്ഷേത്രം അപൂർവ്വമായ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രമായി മാറി. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവം കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ ശിവരാത്രിയാണ്.
