Puthukkulam Sree Nagaraja Swami Temple, located in Vengalloor, is distinguished as a unique temple where Nagaraja serves as the principal deity.
According to legend, Lord Parasuraman created the land of Kerala for human habitation by casting his axe into the sea. However, the area was overrun by serpents. In search of a solution, he sought the assistance of Lord Parameshwara, who advised that only Lord Ananthaswamy could provide the necessary help.
After enduring rigorous penance, Lord Ananthaswamy manifested before Parasuraman and resolved the issue by subduing the serpents. The festival commemorating the birth of Lord Ananthaswamy is observed during the Ayilyam asterism in the Malayalam month of Kanni.
This festival features a series of ritualistic ceremonies dedicated to the worship of serpent deities, including Noorum Palum, Ayilyam Pooja, and Thalihu Kuda.
On the evening of the Ayilyam asterism, the Sarppabali ritual takes place, followed by a procession to the southern area of the Kavu. Additionally, on the Makam asterism, the rituals of Noorum Palum and Makam Idi are performed.
പുതുക്കുളം ശ്രീ നാഗരാജാ ക്ഷേത്രം
കേരളത്തിൽ ആദ്യകാലം മുതൽ നാഗങ്ങളെ ദൈവങ്ങളായി ആരാധിക്കുന്ന ഒരു സമ്പ്രദായം നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. നാഗദൈവങ്ങൾ കുടുംബത്തിലെ ദോഷങ്ങൾ നീക്കുകയും കാത്തുസൂക്ഷിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുമെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. സർപ്പക്കാവുകളും നാഗത്തറയും പഴയ കാല തറവാടികളിൽ ഇന്നും കാണപ്പെടുന്നു.
കേരളത്തിൽ നിരവധി പുരാതന നാഗക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്. അവയിൽ പ്രധാനമായത്, മണക്കാട് തൊടുപുഴയാറിന്റെ കരയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പുതുക്കുളം നാഗരാജക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ഭഗവതിയാണ്, പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് ദർശനമുണ്ട്. പ്രധാന ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ മൂന്ന് വാതിലുകൾ വഴി പത്തോളം ദേവതകൾ ദർശനം നൽകുന്നു. തെക്കുവശത്തെ നാഗരാജ നടയ്ക്കാണ് പ്രത്യേക പ്രാധാന്യം.
ഒരേ ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ നാഗരാജാവ്, നാഗയക്ഷി, കരിനാഗം, കുഴിനാഗം, ഭഗവതി, ഭദ്രകാളി, ഭുവനേശ്വരി, ശാസ്താവ്, ഗണപതി തുടങ്ങിയ മൂർത്തികൾ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. കന്നിമാസത്തിലെ ആയില്യം, മകം, മഹോത്സവം, പത്താമുദയം എന്നിവയെ സമുചിതമായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.
