Vandanmedu Mahaganapathy Temple is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh situated at Vandanmedu,Idukki.
Vandanmedu Mahaganapathy Temple is the sole shrine in the Idukki district dedicated to Mahaganapati as the principal deity. The Mahaganapati temple is renowned for its architectural elegance. Surrounding the temple, the road lies to the east and north, while the village office is situated to the west and the police station to the south.
Historically, this area was covered by a forest. Urumooppan, the chief of the forest tribes, discovered an idol within the woods and entrusted it to the Mooppan. As night fell, a herd of wild elephants appeared near the Mooppan's residence, instilling fear among the locals. Prompted by the Mooppan's guidance, the idol was returned to its original location, after which the elephants departed.
With the divine presence acknowledged, the community began to offer their worship. According to local legend, the temple was established subsequently. The location is referred to as Anamalayan Petti, signifying the spot where the elephant descended from the mountain. The ancient idol remains here, symbolizing prosperity, and the temple itself is believed to be over a thousand years old. In front of the temple stands a Dwajam, while the interior features a Sreekovil, dhwaja, mukhamandapa, Thattuvilakku, and a spacious courtyard.
This temple is one of only three in Kerala that includes a mukhamandapam, a large Balikkallu, and a flagpole within the same natashala. A beautifully designed mandapam is located in front of the shrine, where Mahaganesh is enshrined as the main deity. Lord Ganapathi, accompanied by Modakam, is enshrined separately, with Shasta positioned to the right and Vana Durga to the left.
Outside the nalambalam, on the right side, there is a Chitrakuta deity representing Nagaraja, Nagayakshi, and the Serpent. Additionally, Rakshass is enshrined on the left side. The rituals are conducted three times, with the Mahaganapati homam being the principal offering. The festival is celebrated over a duration of six days at the temple. The Kodiyettu occurs on Bharani day in the Kumbha month, while the Aarattu is celebrated on Makayiram. The re-consecration day festivities take place during Punartham Nakshatra.
Ganesha sculpture in South India holds the distinction of being the largest of its kind. Standing at an impressive height of 38 feet, the idol is crafted from cement and wire. Its construction spanned six years and incurred an expenditure of 32 lakh rupees. The renowned sculptor Cherthala Eramallur Sivanandan was responsible for its creation. Additionally, Vandanmet is recognized as the first temple in India to offer cardamom to the deity.
വണ്ടൻമേട് മഹാഗണപതി ക്ഷേത്രം
ഇടുക്കി ജില്ലയിലെ വണ്ടൻമേട് പഞ്ചായത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പുരാതന ശ്രീ മഹാഗണപതിക്ഷേത്രം, മഹാഗണപതി മൂലപ്രതിഷ്ഠയുള്ള ജില്ലയിലെ ഏക ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം വാസ്തുശിൽപ കലയുടെ മനോഹാരിതയിൽ നിർമ്മിതമാണ്. പണ്ടുകാലത്ത് ഇവിടെ കാടായിരുന്നു. കാട്ടുമൂപ്പന്മാരുടെ നേതാവായ ഊരുമൂപ്പൻ, കാട്ടിൽ കിടന്ന ഒരു വിഗ്രഹം എടുത്തുകൊണ്ടുപോയി, അത് വലിയ മൂപ്പനെ ഏൽപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
രാത്രി ആയപ്പോൾ, മൂപ്പന്റെ വീടിനു മുന്നിൽ കാട്ടാനക്കൂട്ടങ്ങൾ എത്തി. ഇത് കണ്ടവർ ഭയപ്പെട്ടു. പിന്നീട്, വലിയ മൂപ്പന്റെ നിർദ്ദേശപ്രകാരം വിഗ്രഹം തിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുവന്നു. ഇതോടെ ആനകൾ ഇറങ്ങിപ്പോവുകയും ചെയ്തു. ദേവസാന്നിധ്യം തെളിഞ്ഞതോടെ, അവിടെ ആളുകൾ ആരാധന ആരംഭിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥാപിതമായതിന്റെ ഐതിഹ്യം ഇതാണ്.
ശ്രീകോവിലിന് മുന്നിൽ മനോഹരമായ ഒരു മണ്ഡപം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ശ്രീകോവിലിലെ പ്രധാന ദേവൻ മഹാഗണപതി ആണ്. സന്ദർശനത്തിൽ മോദക ഹസ്തം കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ശ്രീകോവിലിന്റെ വലതുഭാഗത്ത് ശാസ്താവും ഇടതുഭാഗത്ത് വനദുർഗ്ഗയും പ്രത്യേകമായി സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന കോവിലിലാണ്. നാലമ്പലത്തിനു പുറത്ത് വലതുഭാഗത്ത് നാഗരാജാവും നാഗയക്ഷിയും സർപ്പസങ്കല്പമായ ചിത്രകൂടയും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
ഇടതുഭാഗത്ത് രക്ഷസിനെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. പൂജകൾ മൂന്ന് തവണ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. മഹാഗണപതിഹോമം പ്രധാനമായ വഴിപാട് ആണ്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ആറുദിവസങ്ങളോളം ഉത്സവം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. കുംഭമാസത്തിൽ ഭരണിക്ക് കൊടിയേറി മകയിരത്തിൽ ആറാട്ട് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. പുണർതം നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ പുനഃപ്രതിഷ്ഠാദിനാഘോഷം നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു.
കൊടിയേറ്റു കഴിഞ്ഞ് മൂന്നാം ദിവസം പള്ളിവേട്ട നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. നാലാം ദിവസത്തിൽ ആറാട്ട് നടക്കുന്നു. ആറാട്ടെഴുന്നെള്ളത്തിൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും പുറപ്പെട്ട് ആറാട്ടുകടവിലെത്തിച്ചേരുന്നതും അവിടെനിന്നും ആനയുടെയും താലപ്പൊലിയുടെയും വാദ്യമേളങ്ങളുടെയും അകമ്പടിയോടെ ആമയാൾ എത്തുന്നു.
