Vandiperiyaru Sri Dharmasastha Temple is an additional Dharmasastha temple managed by the Poonjar Koikkal Devaswom. It is situated approximately 1.5 kilometers from the town of Vandiperiyar.
Vandiperiyar Sree Dharma Shasta temple is located at the precise site where Manavikrama Pandyan received assistance from a sixteen-year-old boy during his battle against dacoits. It is widely believed that this boy was Dharma Shasta.
During his journey from Tamil Nadu in search of an ideal settlement, he initially selected the banks of the Periyar River. However, this location proved to be unfortunate for the king, prompting him to heed the counsel of Ayappa, who had come to his rescue, and to move on without delay.
Subsequently, Manavikrama Pandyan acquired the land where he experienced this divine encounter and constructed a temple dedicated to Ayappa. The temple also enshrines other deities, including Subramanya, Bhagavathy, and Ganesha. The management of the temple is overseen by members of the Poonjar Royal family, under the auspices of the Poonjar Koickal Devaswom.
ശ്രീ ധർമശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം വണ്ടിപ്പെരിയാർ
വണ്ടിപ്പെരിയാറിലുള്ള ശ്രീ ധർമശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം, പൂഞ്ഞാർ കോയിക്കൽ ദേവസ്വത്തിൻറെ കീഴിലുള്ള മറ്റൊരു ധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. വണ്ടിപ്പെരിയാർ ടൗണിൽ നിന്ന് 1.5 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. കൊള്ളക്കാർക്കെതിരായ പോരാട്ടത്തിൽ പതിനാറു വയസ്സുള്ള ഒരു ആൺകുട്ടി മാനവിക്രമ പാണ്ഡ്യനെ സഹായിച്ച സ്ഥലത്താണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്.
ആ ബാലൻ ധർമ്മശാസ്താവായി വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. താമസിക്കാൻ അനുയോജ്യമായ സ്ഥലം കണ്ടെത്താൻ തമിഴ്നാട്ടിൽ നിന്നുള്ള യാത്രകളിൽ അദ്ദേഹം ആദ്യം തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത് പെരിയാർ നദിയുടെ തീരമാണ്. വാസമുറപ്പിക്കൽ രാജാവിന് അനുകൂലമായിരുന്നില്ല, അയ്യപ്പന്റെ ഉപദേശം കേട്ട് അദ്ദേഹം ഉടൻ അവിടെ നിന്ന് മാറി. പിന്നീട്, മാനവിക്രമ പാണ്ഡ്യൻ തന്റെ ദിവ്യ കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച നടന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് അയ്യപ്പന്റെ ക്ഷേത്രം പണിതു. ഈ അയ്യപ്പൻ പിന്നീട് പമ്പക്കടുത്തുള്ള ശബരിമല ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ വിഗ്രഹത്തിൽ ലയിച്ചു.
