Shiva Temple is located in Vandiperiyar, in proximity to Kumily and Tekkady. Sabarimala Temple lies a mere 25 kilometers from this site.
In the 11th century, Manavikrama Pandyan came across the remnants of a temple situated along the banks of the Periyar River. However, his choice to establish a settlement in that location proved to be unwise, as he was swiftly attacked and robbed by a group of bandits.
Fortunately, he was saved by a young boy named Ayappa, who is now revered as the spiritual lord of the Sabarimala Temple. In the 1970s, a Shivalinga was discovered at the site of the ruins. For several years, this Shivalinga was kept in a modest structure next to the Vandiperiyar Sree Dharma Shasta temple. In 2015, members of the Poonjar royal family initiated the construction of an elaborate Shiva temple at the very location where Manavikrama Pandyan had unearthed the ruins.
The following year, the Shiva temple was consecrated. According to devaprashna, the Shivalinga is believed to date back to the Treta Yuga and remains largely untouched by human intervention. Shivarathri, celebrated at the temple, is also recognized as a festival of the land, drawing large crowds to the temple grounds for the celebrations.
വണ്ടിപ്പെരിയാർ ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രം
വണ്ടിപ്പെരിയാർ ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രം കോയിക്കൽ ദേവസ്വത്തിൻറെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ഇടുക്കി ജില്ലയിലെ വണ്ടിപ്പെരിയാർ എന്ന മലയോര പഞ്ചായത്തിൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. പതിനൊന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ, മാനവിക്രമ പാണ്ഡ്യൻ പെരിയാർ നദിയുടെ തീരത്ത് ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്തിയിരുന്നു. അവിടെ സ്ഥിരതാമസമാക്കാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ തീരുമാനം ജ്ഞാനപൂർവകമായിരുന്നില്ല, കാരണം ഒരു കൊള്ളസംഘം അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തൽക്ഷണം ആക്രമിക്കുകയും കൊള്ളയടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ശബരിമല ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൻറെ ആത്മീയ നാഥനായ അയ്യപ്പൻ എന്ന ബാലനാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ രക്ഷിച്ചത്. 1970-കളിൽ, അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്തിയ സ്ഥലത്ത് ഒരു ശിവലിംഗം കണ്ടെത്തി. വണ്ടിപ്പെരിയാർ ശ്രീ ധർമ്മ ശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രത്തോട് ചേർന്നുള്ള ഒരു ചെറിയ കെട്ടിടത്തിലാണ് വർഷങ്ങളോളം ശിവലിംഗം സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരുന്നത്. 2015-ൽ പൂഞ്ഞാറിൽ രാജകുടുംബാംഗങ്ങൾ പൂർവ്വികനും കുടുംബസ്ഥാപകനുമായ മാനവിക്രമ പാണ്ഡ്യന്റെ അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്തിയ സ്ഥലത്ത് ഒരു വലിയ ശിവക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിക്കാൻ പ്രവർത്തനം ആരംഭിച്ചു.
അടുത്ത വർഷം ശിവക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തപ്പെട്ടു. ശിവലിംഗം, ദേവപ്രശ്നമനുസരിച്ച്, ത്രേതായുഗത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ളതാണെന്നും മനുഷ്യ കൈകളാൽ സ്പർശിക്കാത്തതാണെന്നും വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന ശിവരാത്രി നാടിന്റെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവമായാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.
