Akliyath Siva Temple is a hidden gem nestled in Azhikode Village, in the Kannur District of Kerala, India. Located just 8 kilometers north of Kannur town, in the northern Malabar region, this temple stands as a testament to ancient heritage and spiritual significance.
This rare and ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the unique form of Kirathamoorthi. It embodies all the essential features of a traditional Kerala temple. Facing east, the temple welcomes devotees through a gopuram (ornate gateway tower). The outer boundary wall, constructed in a classic four-sided design, showcases remarkable architectural craftsmanship.
One of the first sights upon entering is the majestic flagpole (dwajasthambam), symbolizing the temple’s sanctity.
Within the premises lies a koothambalam (temple theatre) and small shrines dedicated to other deities. At the heart of the temple complex, within the chuttambalam (inner courtyard), stands the sanctum sanctorum (sreekovil) where the main deity resides. Though there are no written records, the temple is believed to be over a thousand years old.
According to legend, the deity Kirathamoorthi, originally worshipped in Vayathoor as Vayathoorkaaliyaar, desired to reside in Azhikode. Respecting this divine wish, the devotees installed an idol of Kirathamoorthi at Akliyath and consecrated it through rituals and daily poojas, making the temple a sacred center of devotion ever since.
അക്ലിയത്ത് ശിവക്ഷേത്രം
കണ്ണൂർ നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഏകദേശം 8 കിലോമീറ്റർ വടക്കുള്ള അഴിക്കൽ ഫെറി റോഡിലെ വൻകുളത്ത് വയൽ എന്ന സ്ഥലത്താണ് അക്ലിയത്ത് ശിവക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ഏതാണ്ട് ആയിരം വർഷത്തെ ചരിത്രമുണ്ടെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ കിരാതമൂർത്തിയായ ശിവൻ ആണ്. മഹാഭാരതത്തിലെ കിരാതാർജ്ജുനവിജയം ആസ്പദമാക്കിയുള്ള അർജുനന് പാശുപതാസ്ത്രം നേടുന്ന ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ശില്പകലയിൽ കൊത്തിവെച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉത്ഭവം സംബന്ധിച്ച ഒരു പ്രസിദ്ധമായ കഥയാണ് താഴെ പറയുന്നത്: പതിനൊന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിനോടടുത്ത്, കേനോത്ത് കുടുംബത്തിലെ ഗുരുക്കളും ഒരു നമ്പൂതിരിയും ചേർന്ന് വയത്തൂർ കാളിയാർ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉത്സവം കാണാനായി പോയി. തിരികെ മടങ്ങുമ്പോൾ ഒരു ചെറിയ കിളി ഗുരുക്കളുടെ തൊപ്പിക്കുടയിൽ കയറിപ്പറ്റി. ആ കിളി ഗുരുക്കളുടെ കൂടെ കേനോത്ത് വീട്ടിലെത്തി. കുട ഇറക്കിയപ്പോൾ കിളി അടുത്തുള്ള ഒരു ഇലഞ്ഞിമരത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് പറന്ന് അതിൽ താമസിച്ചു തുടങ്ങി.
കിളിയെ പുറത്താക്കാനും കുട മാറ്റാനുമുള്ള ശ്രമങ്ങൾ പലതവണ നടത്തിയെങ്കിലും പരാജയപ്പെട്ടു. അതിനിടെ കിളി ആവർത്തിച്ച് വിചിത്രമായി ചിലയ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇത് യാതൊരു സാധാരണമായ സംഭവമല്ലെന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു, പ്രശ്നം വെച്ചുനോക്കിയപ്പോൾ വയത്തൂർ കാളിയാർ തന്നെയാണ് ഗുരുക്കളുടെ കൂടെ എത്തിയതെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാവുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ശേഷം, ഗുരുക്കൾ അവരുടെ കളരിയ്ക്ക് സമീപത്തായി, കുടുംബപരദേവതകളുടെ അടുത്ത് കാളിയാരെയും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു.
'ആ കിളി എത്തിയത്' എന്നത് പിന്നീട് ലോപിച്ച് 'അക്ലിയത്ത്' എന്ന പേരായി മാറുകയായിരുന്നു.മകരമാസത്തിൽ മൂന്നു ദിവസമാണ് അക്ലിയത്ത് ശിവക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഉത്സവം നടത്തുന്നത്, പ്രധാന വഴിപാടായി നെയ്യ് അഭിഷേകം. ഉത്സവത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ആകർഷണങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് മകരം 13-നുള്ള അക്ലിയത്തപ്പനും സമീപത്തെ പുതിയകാവ് ഭഗവതിയും തമ്മിലുള്ള കൂടികാഴ്ച. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ കിരാതാർജുനവിജയം ആസ്പദമാക്കി അർജുനന് പാശുപതാസ്ത്രം ലഭിക്കുന്നത് വരെയുള്ള കാഴ്ചകൾ ശില്പകലയിൽ ഭംഗിയായി കൊത്തിയിട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. വടക്ക് ഭാഗത്തുള്ള വലിയ കുളം, നെയ്യമൃതിനായി പ്രത്യേക കെട്ടിടം എന്നിവയും ഉണ്ട്. പ്രധാന വഴിപാടുകൾ: പുഷ്പാഞ്ജലി, ധാര, വെള്ളനിവേദ്യം, നെയ്യമൃത്, മൃത്യഞ്ജയഹോമം, കറുകഹോമം എന്നിവയാണ്.
