Cheleri Sri Subrahmanya Swami Temple, situated in Chelerimukk, Kannur, Kerala, is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya, the deity of war and son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Thaipooyam is the main festival celebrated at the temple. When the demon Tarakasura made life unbearable in the celestial world, the sages and the gods sought refuge with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. In response, Lord Shiva sent his son, Subrahmanya, to defeat the demon. Subrahmanya embarked on this divine mission armed with twelve powerful weapons. After vanquishing Tarakasura, Lord Subrahmanya restored peace and prosperity to the celestial realms.
Thaipooyam is celebrated in memory of this divine victory. Kavadi (ritual offering) is a symbolic act of devotion to Lord Subrahmanya. Different types of kavadi—such as peacock kavadi, flower kavadi, and bhasma (sacred ash) kavadi—are offered for the fulfillment of wishes. Kavadi dance performed on the day of Thaipooyam is especially significant. The festival is celebrated over the course of a week and is renowned for its devotional fervor and festive grandeur at this temple.
ചേലേരി ശ്രീ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം
ചേലേരി ശ്രീ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം, കണ്ണൂർ റെയിൽവേ സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 14 കിലോമീറ്ററും, കണ്ണൂർ കണ്ണാടിപറമ്പിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 3.5 കിലോമീറ്ററും ദൂരത്തിലാണ് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. വളരെ പുരാതനവും പൗരാണികപ്രാധാന്യമുള്ളതുമായ ക്ഷേത്രമാണിത്. പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠയാകുന്നത് ശിവസുതനുമായും ദേവസേനാപതിയായും അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യനാണ്.ബ്രാഹ്മണ്യം എന്നത് ശിവനെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതായാണ് വിശ്വാസം. മുരുകൻ, കുമാരൻ, ഗുഹൻ, സ്കന്ദൻ, കാർത്തികേയൻ, ശരവണൻ, ഷണ്മുഖൻ, അറുമുഖൻ എന്നീ നിരവധി പേരുകളാൽ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
ദേവലോകത്തെ ദുഷ്പ്രഭാവം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയിരുന്ന താരകാസുരനെയെ നിഗ്രഹിക്കാനായി ഭഗവാൻ ശിവൻ തന്റെ പുത്രനായ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യനെയാണ് അയച്ചത്. പന്ത്രണ്ട് ആയുധങ്ങളുമായിട്ടാണ് സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ യാത്രയേറിയത്. അതിനുശേഷം താരകാസുരനെ സംഹരിക്കുകയും, ദേവലോകത്തിൽ ഐശ്വര്യം വീണ്ടും പുനഃസ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഈ മഹത്തായ വിജയത്തിന്റെ സ്മരണയായി ആചരിക്കുന്നത് തന്നെ തൈപ്പൂയ മഹോത്സവമാണ്.
കാവടി സമർപ്പണം എന്നത് സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യനോടുള്ള അതീവ ഭക്തിയുടെ പ്രതീകമാണ്. വിശ്വാസപ്രകാരം, അഭീഷ്ടസിദ്ധിക്കായി പീലിക്കാവടി, പൂക്കാവടി, ഭസ്മക്കാവടി തുടങ്ങിയവ സമർപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. തൈപ്പൂയ ദിനത്തിൽ കാവടി കെട്ടിയാടൽ ഏറെ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. ഒരാഴ്ച നീളുന്ന തൈപ്പൂയാഘോഷം, ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഭക്തിയാലോഭിതമായും ആകർഷകമായ ഉത്സവവൈഭവത്തോടെയും ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
