Kadirur Surya Narayana Temple, located just 8 kilometers from Thalassery in Kannur district, is a prominent and ancient Hindu temple steeped in legend and spiritual significance.
The name “Kadirur” is derived from “Kadiravapuram,” which translates to “the land of the Sun,” reflecting the temple's dedication to Lord Surya Narayana, the Sun God.
According to legend, the temple’s origins trace back to the epic Ramayana. It is believed that during his journey to Lanka in search of Goddess Sita, Lord Rama consecrated the idols of Lord Subramanya at the Makreri and Peralassery temples. On learning this, the Vedic Brahmins residing in Kadirur engaged in deep meditation to seek the Lord’s blessings.
Moved by their devotion, Lord Rama visited Kadirur and blessed the land. Feeling the divine presence of the Sun God there, he installed the idol of Lord Surya Narayana at this very spot.
An alternate version of the legend suggests that it was here that Sage Agastya Muni imparted the sacred Aditya Hridaya Mantram—a powerful hymn dedicated to the Sun God—to Lord Rama, who was in a state of confusion during his battle with Ravana.
After chanting the hymn three times, Rama gained the strength and clarity to defeat Ravana. As an expression of gratitude and victory, he later consecrated the idol of Lord Surya Narayana at Kadirur.
This temple stands today not only as a spiritual haven but also as a reminder of the divine legacy connected to the Ramayana and the enduring faith of its devotees.
കതിരൂർ സൂര്യനാരായണ ക്ഷേത്രം
വിഷ്ണു സങ്കൽപത്തിലുള്ള സൂര്യഭഗവാൻ, അഥവാ കതിരവൻ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠയായ മഹാക്ഷേത്രമാണ് കതിരൂർ സൂര്യനാരായണ ക്ഷേത്രം. കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലയിലെ തലശ്ശേരി–കൂർഗ് അന്തർസംസ്ഥാന പാതയോട് ചേർന്ന് കതിരൂരിലാണ് ഈ പ്രാചീന ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്.ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയ്ക്ക് രാമായണകാലഘട്ടവുമായി ചേർന്ന് ചില ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങൾ അനുസരിച്ച് വിശ്വാസങ്ങൾ നിലനില്ക്കുന്നു. ശ്രീരാമൻ രാമ–രാവണ യുദ്ധത്തിനിടയിലായിരുന്നു സീതാദേവിയെ രക്ഷിക്കാനായി ലങ്കയിലേക്കുള്ള യാത്രയിലെ ഭാഗമായ് ഇവിടെ എത്തുന്നത്. അപ്പോൾ അഗസ്ത്യമുനി അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു സൂര്യദേവനെ സ്തുതിക്കുന്ന ആദിത്യഹൃദയമന്ത്രം പകർന്നു നൽകുകയായിരുന്നു.
ഈ മന്ത്രം മൂന്ന് തവണ ജപിച്ചതിന് ശേഷം രാമൻ രാവണനെ വിജയകരമായി കീഴടക്കി. അങ്ങനെ വിജയത്തോടെ തിരികെ മടങ്ങുമ്പോൾ ഈ ഭൂമിയിൽ സൂര്യദേവന്റെ ദിവ്യ സാന്നിധ്യം അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടതിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി ശ്രീരാമൻ ഇവിടെ സൂര്യപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നിർവഹിച്ചുവെന്നാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം. സൂര്യഭഗവാന്റെ കൃപ ലഭിക്കാൻ, സൂര്യദശാകാലത്തിലെ അനിഷ്ടഫലങ്ങൾ നീക്കാൻ, ജാതകത്തിലെ ഗ്രഹദോഷങ്ങൾ മാറ്റാൻ തുടങ്ങിയ സന്ദർഭങ്ങളിൽ ഭക്തർ ഇവിടെ എത്തുന്നു.
നവഗ്രഹങ്ങളുടെ അദ്ധിപതിയായ ആദിത്യൻ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പൂർണ ചൈതന്യത്തോടെ വാഴുന്നു എന്ന് വിശ്വാസം.പ്രത്യേകമായി ഓരോ മാസവും രണ്ടാം ശനിയാഴ്ചകളിൽ നടക്കുന്ന നവഗ്രഹപൂജയ്ക്ക് അനേകം ഭക്തർ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നു. കൂടാതെ മംഗല്യഭാഗ്യത്തിനായി ആശ്രയിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രവുമാണ് കതിരൂർ സൂര്യനാരായണക്ഷേത്രം.
ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനമായും തിങ്കളാഴ്ചകളിൽ നടക്കുന്ന സ്വയംവരപൂജ വിവാഹതടസ്സം അനുഭവിക്കുന്നവർ, വിവാഹാശംസിക്കുന്നവർ എന്നിവർക്ക് വലിയ ആശ്വാസമാണ്. ഭക്തി സഹിതം പങ്കെടുത്തു പ്രാർഥിച്ചാൽ ഫലം ഉടനുണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് വിശ്വാസം ശക്തമാണ്.ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ശ്രീപരമേശ്വരനും ശ്രീഗണപതിയും ഉപദേവതകളായി ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പ്രകൃതിരമണീയതയും, ആചാരപരമായ പരമ്പരകളും ചേർന്ന് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ഭക്തരഹിതമാകാത്ത ദിവ്യകേന്ദ്രമായി ഇന്നും നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു.
