Kanhirangad Sree Vaidyanatha Temple is located atop a hill in Kanhirangad, approximately 6 km from Thaliprambu, and is considered one of the 108 ancient Shiva temples in Kerala.
The primary deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, facing east. Known as Vaidyanatha, meaning "the healer," the deity is revered as a renowned Ayurveda physician. Sub-deities worshipped here include Bhagawathy, Ayyappan, and Ganapathy, with the main deity also being affectionately called Kanhirangattappan, meaning the deity of Kanhirangad.
Devotees believe that skin and eye diseases are cured by offering Bhajan (singing hymns in praise of the god).
The primary rituals include Ksheeradhara (pouring milk on the idol) and Jaladhara (pouring water on the idol), with 'Venna Nivedyam' (offering butter) being particularly beneficial for pregnancy-related difficulties. Shivarathri, celebrated in the Malayalam month of Kumbam (February/March), is the temple's main festival. Aaru Nhayar (Six Sunday) ceremony is also observed here, where if the 6th day of any Malayalam month falls on a Sunday, it is considered auspicious.
Thiruvathira is another major celebration at the temple.
Kanhirangad Sri Vaidyanatha Shiva Temple is highly revered in the local area, forming part of the trinity of significant temples, alongside the Taliparamba Shiva Temple and the Trichambaram Sri Krishna Temple. These temples, including Sree Vaidyanatha, Taliparamba (Sree Raja Rajeswara), and Trichambaram (Lord Krishna), are interconnected and governed by a single authority, the Thaliparambu-Trichambaram-Kanhirangad Devasom.

തളിപ്പറമ്പിൽ നിന്ന് ആലംകോട്ട് വഴി 6 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയുള്ള കാഞ്ഞിരങ്ങാട് വൈദ്യനാഥക്ഷേത്രം, ശിവഭക്തർക്കിടയിൽ ഏറെ വിശ്വാസപൂർവം ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠയായ ശ്രീപരമേശ്വരൻ ഇവിടെ "വൈദ്യനാഥൻ" എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു — സർവരോഗങ്ങൾക്ക് ഔഷധശക്തിയുള്ള ദൈവമായി. കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനമായ് നിലകൊള്ളുന്ന ഈ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ, സ്വയംഭുവായി രൂപംകൊണ്ടതാണെന്ന വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്.
"വൈദ്യനാഥൻ" എന്ന പേരിനനുസരിച്ച്, രോഗപരിഹാരത്തിനായി ഭക്തർ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം അഭയസ്ഥലമാക്കുന്നു. കണ്ണ്, ത്വക്ക് രോഗങ്ങൾക്കും മറ്റ് നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന വ്യാധികൾക്കുമെതിരെ ഭജനയുമായി ആശ്രയിക്കുന്ന ഭക്തർക്കു സന്തോഷകരമായ ഫലങ്ങൾ ലഭിക്കുന്നതായാണ് വിശ്വാസം. കാഞ്ഞിരങ്ങാട് വൈദ്യനാഥനെ ഭജിച്ചാൽ മാറാത്ത രോഗങ്ങളില്ലെന്നും സമൂഹവിശ്വാസം പകർന്നു നൽകുന്നു. മലയാള മാസത്തിലെ ആറാം തീയതി ഞായറാഴ്ചയ്ക്കു സംയുക്തമായി വരുന്ന ദിനം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രത്യേകമായി കാണപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഞായറാഴ്ചകള്‍ വളരെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടവയാണ്, ഈ ദിവസം വ്രതം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ച് ദർശനം നടത്തുന്നത് രോഗശാന്തിക്ക് വളരെ ഫലപ്രദമാണെന്നത് വിശ്വാസപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. പ്രത്യേകിച്ച്, ജാതകത്തിൽ ആദിത്യ ദശാകാലങ്ങളിലെ ദോഷശാന്തിക്കായി അനേകം ഞായറാഴ്ചകൾ വ്രതമായി അനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്നത് ഉത്തമമാണെന്ന് ആചാരമുണ്ട്.
കുന്തീദേവി തന്റെ ഭർത്താവായ പാണ്ഡുവിന്റെ രോഗശാന്തിക്കായി വൈദ്യനാഥനെ ഭജിച്ചിരുന്നതായും ഇതുവഴി അനുഗ്രഹം ലഭിച്ചതായും ഐതിഹ്യമുണ്ട്. ക്ഷേത്ര പരിസരത്തുള്ള ആലമരവും കാഞ്ഞിരമരവും ദിവ്യശക്തിയുള്ളവയാണെന്ന വിശ്വാസം നിലനില്ക്കുന്നു. ഈ മരങ്ങൾക്കു മുന്നിൽ പ്രാർത്ഥനയും ഭജനവും അനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്നതും ആചാരമുണ്ട്.
ഞായറാഴ്ച ദർശനം അത്യന്തം വിശിഷ്ടമാണെന്നതും വിശ്വാസികളുടെ വിശ്വാസം ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്നു. ധനുമാസത്തിലെ തിരുവാതിരയും കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ ശിവരാത്രിയും പ്രധാന ഉത്സവങ്ങളായി ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. അതുപോലെ തന്നെ, മലയാളമാസത്തിൽ ആറാം തീയതിയും ഞായറാഴ്ചയും ഒരേ ദിവസമായി വരുമ്പോൾ, അതിനുള്ള പ്രാധാന്യം വളരെ കൂടുതലാണ്, ദേവപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടന്നത് അന്നായിരുന്നുവെന്നതാണ് ഐതിഹ്യത്തിന്റെ ആധികാരികത.പദേവരായി ഭഗവതി, അയ്യപ്പൻ, ഗണപതി എന്നിവരും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രപരിപാലനം മലബാർ ദേവസ്വത്തിന്റെ കീഴിലായി പെരിഞ്ചല്ലൂർ ഗ്രാമം വഹിക്കുന്ന ഭക്തപരമായ ഉത്തരവാദിത്വങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ് നടക്കുന്നത്. 'വെണ്ണ നിവേദ്യം' എന്ന വഴിപാടും ഇവിടെ പ്രശസ്തമാണ്.
