Payyanur Sree Subramanya Swami Temple is considered one of the three most important Maha Subrahmanya temples in South India. It is believed that the temple was established by Lord Parasurama an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Often referred to as the "Palani of Kerala," the temple is affectionately known as Payyannur Perumal. The name "Payyannur" itself is derived from "Payyan," an epithet of Lord Subrahmanya, and "Ooru," meaning land—thus, Payyannur signifies "the land of Lord Subrahmanya."
It is believed that the temple was originally established by Lord Parasurama.
Over the centuries, it faced destruction twice—once due to a devastating fire and again during an attack by Tippu Sultan.
The temple follows a daily ritual pattern that includes five poojas and three Sivelis (ritual processions). Spanning over 3 acres, the temple complex is both vast and serene.
While Lord Subrahmanya is the presiding deity, several other deities are also worshipped here, including Lord Ganapathi, Bhootathar, Kanya Bhagavathi, Sasthavu, and Parasurama. In addition, Kshetrapalan and Vairajathan are revered within the temple premises.
പയ്യന്നൂർ ശ്രീ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം
കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലയുടെ വടക്കേ അറ്റത്തുള്ള പയ്യന്നൂർ നഗരത്തിലെ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് പയ്യന്നൂർ ശ്രീ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം. പയ്യന്നൂർ നഗരമധ്യത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ മഹാക്ഷേത്രം അത്യുഗ്രരൂപത്തിലുള്ള സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമിയെ പ്രധാനദേവനായി ആരാധിക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ ഏറെ സുപ്രധാനമാണെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇതിനെ ഉത്തരകേരളത്തിലെ പഴനി എന്നായാണ് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.
പ്രധാനപ്രതിഷ്ഠയായ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമിയോടൊപ്പം, ഉപദേവതകളായി ഗണപതി, അയ്യപ്പൻ, ഭഗവതി, ഭൂതത്താൻ, നാഗദേവതകൾ, പരശുരാമൻ, കൂടാതെ ക്ഷേത്രപാലൻ എന്നിവർക്കും ഇവിടെ പ്രത്യേക പ്രതിഷ്ഠയുണ്ട്. വിശ്വാസപ്രകാരം, ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ഭഗവാൻ പരശുരാമനാൽ തന്നെയാണ് സ്ഥാപിതമായതെന്നും, അതിനാൽ തന്നെ പരശുരാമ ശാസനങ്ങൾ പാലിക്കുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമായി ഈ ദേവസ്ഥാനം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
വൃശ്ചികമാസം ഒന്നാം തീയതി ആരംഭിച്ച് രണ്ടുമാസം നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന സമാരാധനാ മഹോത്സവം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ആഘോഷമാണ്. കൂടാതെ സ്കന്ദഷഷ്ഠിയും വലിയ ആഘോഷപൂർവം ആചരിക്കുന്നു. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം മലബാർ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡിൻറെ കീഴിലാണ് പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നത്.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രത്യേകതയാണ് പന്ത്രണ്ടടി ഉയരമുള്ള ചുറ്റുമതിൽ. ചുറ്റുമതിലിനകത്ത് ഏകദേശം മൂന്ന് ഏക്കർ വിസ്തീർണമുള്ള പ്രദേശത്ത് ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. മുഖ്യദേവനായ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി, താരകാസുരനെ നിഗ്രഹിച്ചശേഷമുള്ള ഉഗ്രഭാവത്തിൽ, കിഴക്കേ ദർശനത്തോടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. വിഗ്രഹത്തിന് ഏകദേശം ആറടി ഉയരം ഉള്ളതുമാണ്.ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനടുത്തായി ഒരു സർപ്പക്കാവ് കൂടിയുണ്ട്.
