Thodeekalam Shiva Temple in Kannur's Chittariparamba is an ancient site renowned for its exquisite mural paintings, estimated to be over 2,000 years old. The temple's sanctum sanctorum showcases intricate artwork depicting Shaiva-Vaishnavite stories.
Built in the Dwithala Chathurasra Vimana style, the temple features a copper-sheeted roof and beautifully adorned inner walls. The sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) is embellished with exquisite mural paintings that add to the temple's spiritual and artistic charm. The presiding deity, Lord Shiva, faces east, and in front of the sanctum stands a granite Nandi placed on a square-shaped Namaskara Mandapam.
The temple showcases intricate Sudhasilpa—protruding relief sculptures of various deities—which, along with the murals, are crafted from natural materials such as a wooden framework, lime, clay, laterite powder, jaggery, sand, and extracts from local trees. The murals are based on Shaiva and Vaishnava traditions, depicting themes from the lives of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. They also provide a vivid glimpse into the village life of the 16th to 18th centuries, with scenes from epics such as Rukmini Swayamvaram and Ravana Vadham intricately illustrated on the temple walls.

തൊടേക്കളം ശിവക്ഷേത്രം കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലയിലെ ചിറ്റാരിപ്പറമ്പ് ഗ്രാമ പഞ്ചായത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന അത്യന്തം പ്രാചീനമായ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. കേരള പുരാവസ്തു വകുപ്പിന്റെ സംരക്ഷണത്തിലായിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ജൈവച്ചായങ്ങൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് വരച്ച ചുമർചിത്രങ്ങളാലും ചരിത്രപ്രാധാന്യത്തിനാലും സുപ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്. പതിനാറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചതായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം പുരാതനകാലഘട്ടത്തിലെ കലാസാംസ്കാരിക പൈതൃകത്തിന്റെ മഹത്തായ സാക്ഷ്യമാണ്.
ശ്രീകോവിലിന്റെ കിഴക്കുഭാഗത്തെ ചുമറിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ചിത്രങ്ങളിൽ കാളി, ദുർഗാ, ശിവൻ, നടരാജൻ, ചതുര്ബാഹു വിഷ്ണു, കൃഷ്ണൻ, സിംഹാസനത്തിൽ ഇരിക്കുന്ന കോട്ടയം രാജാവ് എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. തെക്കൻഭിത്തിയിലെ ചിത്രങ്ങളായി രാജരാജേശ്വരി, അഘോരശിവൻ, മോഹിനി, ദക്ഷിണാമൂർത്തിയും ശിഷ്യനുമാണ് ആദ്യ ചിത്രങ്ങൾ. ഈ ഭാഗത്ത് മുകളിലും നടുവിലും താഴെയും എന്ന ക്രമത്തിൽ പതിനൊന്ന് ഭാഗങ്ങളായി രുഗ്മിണി സ്വയംവരം വിശദമായി വരച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
രുഗ്മിണി സ്വയംവര ദൃശ്യമാലകളിൽ, കുണ്ഡിന രാജാവായ ഭീഷ്മകനും ഭാര്യയും, കൃഷ്ണനും ബലഭദ്രനും, രുഗ്മിണിയുടെ പ്രേമാഭ്യർത്ഥന കൃഷ്ണനോടറിയിക്കുന്ന ദൂതനും, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എത്തിയ രുഗ്മിണിയെ തേരിലേറി കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്ന കൃഷ്ണനും, സഹായത്തിനെത്തിയ ബലഭദ്രനും, തടയാനെത്തുന്ന രുഗ്മിയും, നടന്ന പോരാട്ടവും, രുഗ്മിയുടെ പരാജയവും, ഒടുവിൽ സിംഹാസനത്തിൽ ഇരിക്കുന്ന കൃഷ്ണനും രുഗ്മിണിയും ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്നു. ഇവയിൽ ഏറ്റവും ശ്രദ്ധേയമായത് അഗ്നിസാക്ഷിയായി നടക്കുന്ന സ്വയംവര ദൃശ്യമാണ്.
പാർവതിയുടെ മടിയിൽ ഇരിക്കുന്ന ഗണപതി, ശൈവ സരസ്വതി, ഗണപതിപൂജ, ശങ്കരാചാര്യർ തുടങ്ങിയവയും തെക്കൻഭിത്തിയിലെ ചിത്രങ്ങളിലുണ്ട്. പടിഞ്ഞാറ് വശത്ത് കാണപ്പെടുന്നത് രാവണന്റെ വധം പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്ന ചിത്രമാണ്. കൂടാതെ, നായാട്ട് ചെയ്യുന്ന ശാസ്താവ്, രാമ-രാവണ യുദ്ധം, ശ്രീരാമ പട്ടാഭിഷേകം, വേണുഗോപാലൻ, സീതാദേവി, കുംഭകർണനെ ഉണർത്തുന്ന ഹനുമാനും രാവണനും, മണ്ഡോദരിയുടെ വിലാപം എന്നിവയും ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു.
