Adoor Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple is an ancient and renowned temple located in Delampady Panchayat, Kasaragod district, approximately 13.6 km (24 minutes) from Mulleriya.
This historic temple, situated on the Kerala-Karnataka border, is considered one of the great temples of South India and holds immense cultural and religious significance.
It is one of the four important temples associated with King Mayappadi, with the deities Atar Devan, Madhur Devan, Kanipurath Devan, and Kavil Devan being worshipped in these sacred sites. The temple features a large pool in front and a beautifully sculpted spring mandapam on the right end of the theater at the entrance, depicting the divine form of Nataraja.
The temple is surrounded by a high perimeter wall with a well-defined apron. Within the Agrashala, a flagpole and sacrificial stone stand before intricate depictions of mythological characters. At the front mandapam, Nandikeshan, the divine bull, is enshrined, adding to the temple's grandeur and sanctity. The grand three-story shrine of Adoor Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple is an architectural marvel, surrounded by intricate stone carvings that encircle the main idol of Lord Shiva, who faces east.
Within the temple premises, several deities are enshrined: Rakteshwari (also known as Kavutikkanam Rakteshwari) is positioned to the left, while Lord Vishnu is on the right. Lord Ganapati also has a dedicated shrine to the left.
One of the most significant offerings at the temple is the Rudrabhishekam, which is performed with great devotion. The temple is also known for its grand Sahasra Kumbhabhishekam festival, celebrated during the Makara month, marking an auspicious transition as per the Kshetra Mahatmya.
Located just 4 km from Kasaragod, on the route to Mulleriya from Kottiyadikavala, Adoor Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple is unique in that it houses both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu within the same sanctum. This rare fusion represents Sankaranarayana, the divine combination of half Shiva and half Vishnu, symbolizing the harmonious balance of destruction and preservation.

ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം മായപ്പാടി രാജാവിൻറെ നാല് പ്രധാന ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. അടർ ദേവൻ, മധുർ ദേവൻ, കണിപുരത്ത് ദേവൻ, കാവിൽ ദേവൻ എന്നിവയാണ് ഈ നാല് ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലെ പ്രധാന ഉപാസനാ മൂർത്തികൾ. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു മുന്നിലെ വലിയ കുളം, പ്രവേശന കവാടത്തിനു മുന്നിലെ നടശാല, വലത്തുഭാഗത്തുള്ള വസന്ത മണ്ഡപം എന്നിവയാണ് പ്രധാന ആകർഷണങ്ങൾ. വസന്ത മണ്ഡപത്തിലെ ഭിത്തികളിൽ നടരാജൻ്റെ രൂപം ചിത്രീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. കൂടാതെ, ഉയർന്ന ചുറ്റുമതിലും അഗ്രശാലയും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ അതിസുന്ദരമായ ആകൃതിയെ വർധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
അഗ്രശാലയിൽ പുരാണ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ ചിത്രങ്ങൾ അലങ്കരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതും അതിനു മുന്നിൽ ധ്വജസ്തംഭവും ബലിക്കല്ലും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതും ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. അതിനു മുന്നിലെ മണ്ഡപത്തിൽ നന്ദികേശൻ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. മൂന്ന് നിലയുള്ള ബൃഹത്തായ ശ്രീകോവിലുമായി ശ്രീ മഹലിംഗേശ്വര ക്ഷേത്രം, അത്യന്തം വിശിഷ്ടമായ ദേവാലയങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. ഗജപൃഷ്ഠാകൃതിയിലുള്ള ശ്രീകോവിലിനു ചുറ്റും ശിലയിൽ കൊത്തിയ ധാരാളം ബിംബങ്ങൾ അലങ്കരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു, പ്രധാന മൂർത്തിയായ ഭഗവാൻ ശിവൻ കിഴക്കോട്ടു ദർശനം നൽകിയാണ് പ്രതിഷ്ഠിതനായിരിക്കുന്നത്. ശ്രീകോവിലിന് ഇടത് ഭാഗത്ത് ഗണപതിയും വലത് വശത്ത് മഹാവിഷ്ണുവും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു, അതേസമയം ശ്രീകോവിലിന് മുന്നിലെ ഇടത് ഭാഗത്ത് കവുടിക്കാനം രക്തേശ്വരി എന്ന പേരിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ദേവിയുടെയും സാന്നിധ്യമുണ്ട്.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വഴിപാടുകളിലൊന്നായ രുദ്രാഭിഷേകം മഹത്വമുള്ളതാണെങ്കിൽ, മകരമാസത്തിലെ സംക്രമത്തിന് ദേവാലയത്തിൽ സഹസ്ര കുംഭാഭിഷേകവും ആഘോഷമാകുന്നു. ഈ മഹാക്ഷേത്രം കാസർഗോഡിൽ നിന്ന് മുള്ളേരിയ വഴി കൊട്ടിയാടികവലയിൽ നിന്ന് നാല് കിലോമീറ്റർ സഞ്ചരിച്ചാൽ എത്തിച്ചേരാവുന്നതാണ്. ഭഗവാൻ ശിവനും മഹാവിഷ്ണുവും ഒരേ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് അകത്ത് പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന അപൂർവ്വ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായ ശ്രീ മഹലിംഗേശ്വര ക്ഷേത്രം, ശിവ-വിഷ്ണു തത്ത്വങ്ങളുടെ ഏകതയേയും മഹത്വവുമൊടു കൂടി ശങ്കരനാരായണന്റെ സാക്ഷാത് സാന്നിധ്യം വിളിച്ചോതുന്നു.
